Can't believe no one has mentoned this one.

Braveheart

Historically inaccurate yes, gory yes,but still a well written script, played by well cast actors and actresses.Thank you Mel Gibson for casting Sophie Marceau (Princess Isabella) in this movie,I had never heard of this stunning french actress untill this movie came out,she is a living statue and a great actress when given a good script.

"Lower your flags and march straight back to England, stopping at every home to beg forgiveness for a hundred years of theft, rape, and murder. Do this and your men shall live. Do it not, and every one of you will die today."

I watched Braveheart on DVD backwards, chapter-by-chapter like Memento. This was because I had already spoiled the ending and wanted to know what had William Wallace done to get himself in such a precarious position.

Did I miss it, or did no one list 'Major Paine' or 'Joe Dirt'? And also, for a funny movie, 'Brave Heart' :)
Oh, and what're wrong with gore? I know someone who judges how good a film is on how much gore is in it. Oddly enough he's become a butcher...

Hi, Luth. Nope, I am not a film school graduate. I have a degree in English which included a few classes in film/film theory. I metioned Eisenstein because, in addition to the editing innovation you mention, the film is part of almost every western director's filmic vocabulary since it was made (remember the sequence in Brian De Palma's The Untouchables?). :D

Hi Euterpe! If you want to get technical, the reason why Eisenstein is "part of almost every western direcotor's filmic vocabulary" is because of the editing of the odessa steps sequence. Eventhough it very rarely is the director's idea since all but a very few films are made by collaboration where the director is only the person making sure everyone is on the same page.

On that same idea what about Porter's The Great Train Robbery? Before that we didn't have parallel action. Or that Eisenstein was able to do what he did by recutting and recutting DW Griffin's Birth of a Nation which was the first film to use close ups :P

___

Film Editing may be the hidden art, but it's far more then a monkey at a keyboard!

Braveheart

It's still Mel Gibson with a weird wig and a skirt on, and also it was boring.

My opinion.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
(Carrey can ACT! Who knew o.O)

A Moment in Time
(Reeve could ACT! Who knew at the time after Superman o.O)

Brigadoon

Wizard Of Oz

Preaching To The Perverted
(Campy little British non-mainstream flick, raunchy, hilarious, not very polished and reminded me in some aspects of Rocky Horror without the music)

Pal Joey
(Forget the story, it's about the music! :D )

Key Largo
(You DO know how to whistle, don't you?)

Dark City
(cheesy story, loved the execution of it though)

On A Clear Day
(Jack Nicholson SINGS! Who knew o.O)

Tank Girl
(I LOVED Laurie Petty in this. The costuming was faaaantastic too. Hilarious to see rappers in snoots too, with tails and ears)

Yaayyy! I'm not the only one who loved eternal sunshine!!!

Awesome movie. My girlfriends didnt appreciated it though. Did you know that there was an alternate story that the directors (fortunately) didnt use it to the final cut? It was about carrey and winslet deleting their memories over and over again till they were old.

Definitely a beaut in my books. The sheer storytelling and how it was filmed, and the process of visualizing the insides of someone's mind unfolding... that was really magical.

Dark City
(cheesy story, loved the execution of it though)

I've never thought of it as cheesy. The whole aspect was very sinister and gripping to me. I've wanted a Dark City sim in SL for awhile, too, one of the ideas I kick around from time to time. I had sort of the vibe in Midnight City. There's some brilliant quotes in Dark City. That year, I also enjoyed The Thirteenth Floor and eXistenz, and o yeah, The Matrix. What a good year to challenge reality! :)

Mystic River
The Grapes of Wrath
Young Frankenstein

1. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
2. Raising Arizona
3. O Brother Where Art Thou
4. Sin City
5. The Usual Suspects
6. House of Flying Daggers
7. Unforgiven

I had to leave a lot of favorites off this list. Like Slingblade, Henry V, (Brannagh version) LotR trilogy, (except for that ass-numbingly long goodbye scene at the end of 3) The Hunger, (best vampire film ever) Straight To Hell, all the lovely Hitchcock noir films...
