From: Teeny Leviathan Is it safe? Oh Gee. I just can't resist sticking my nose into this one. Its another bee in the buzzing Ellie bonnet. I would like to promulgate a simple principle in respect to question asking, as follows: Never ask a question if you cannot imagine an answer which would settle the question to your satisfaction, or at least leave you able to ask another. This (Is it Safe?) is THE prototype question never to ask. No conclusive answer in the positive is possible except by leaping from logic to faith. The only other thing that will settle it is when the trap closes around you. In this sense it is definitely NOT safe. Not even to ask. But I, of course, bask secure in my crazy illogicality Most of the time. *gulp..swivel eyeballs*

If a chicken and a half laid an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs would seven chickens lay in seven days?

From: Ulrika Zugzwang The standard spacing for typographically proportional (non-monospace) fonts after a full stop is 1.5 spaces. While professional typesetting packages automatically space full stops correctly, the inability of word-processing software and markup languages to represent 1.5 spaces has lead to arguments over whether one should use 1 or 2 spaces. My personal preference is to match the standard used in monospace fonts and use 2 spaces.
I'll have to repectfully disagree. Virtually all non-monospace computer fonts are designed such that it will look pleasant with one space after the period. Here's an interesting article on it. The good folks at the Chicago Manual of Style has thisto say: From: someone So, in our efficient, modern world, I think there is no room for two spaces after a period.
Not that the CMS is the bible or anything . While use of two spaces is probably fine as a personal preference when producing left-justified text, I encourage people to use only 1 space after the period when producing fully justified text. The reason being that with fully justified text, the word processor usually has to add spaces between words. Two spaces after the period is a hint to the word processor that it can add even more space between the period and the character that follows it. This can result in *too much space* between sentences. Here is a video where Bill Hill, who works for Microsoft's typography group, talks about one or two spaces after the period. Finally, if you use Tex or LaTex to produce your documents, it will add the appropriate amount of space after the period for you, whether you put one or two spaces after the period. You will have to be careful, however, with abbreviations that end in a period. For example, if you type "e.g.", LaTex will think that the period ends a sentence and will put more space than is appropriate. To get around that, you should put instead "e.g.\", with a backslash after the last period. Thanks for reading, and happy typing to all.

Breaking the law is not a productive method of activism, as it reflects poorly on the protesters, undermining their moral authority. Steal the Mercedes logo off their hood and wear it around your neck on a chain the next to you go to a rave.~Ulrika~

Ulrika, why do you hate me? I mean, many people seem to be offended by your witticisms and commentary, but I don't believe I have once been insulted or offended by anything I've heard you say. The only logical conclusion I can draw is that you're singling me or my particular mindset out, sheerly in an act of spite, and you hate me.
And, recently you created a series of posts that I at least saw as suggesting that people become much more enraged and upset over smaller symbolic acts such as keying an SUV or burning a bible, than serious issues such as war. With that in mind, why do people go to great lengths to correct eachother's spelling/typing/grammatical errors?

From: Ulrika Zugzwang This is an excellent topic, however the question is so broad that any answer I could give would most likely not meet your expectations. Perhaps you could narrow the scope. I was just hoping to get *something* started, perhaps even get other people to contribute, which of course would hijack the thread but whatever. From: Ulrika Zugzwang I spent five minutes on wikipedia and couldn't find anything worth plagiarizing. *sigh* From: Ulrika Zugzwang One must simply ask. Behold. Hillary Clinton for President! Hahaha... crazy chick. Actually I know in vague terms what you look like, since you told me yourself once, but I am still rather curious. So my next question is, if I told you how much I love you, would you get a restraining order, or find ways to impart physical damage upon my body?

From: Kanker Greenacre Is it better to be angry or sad? Given that both emotions are quite natural, I would say that ultimately it depends on the circumstances behind the emotions. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.~Ulrika~
