I would use "callous uneducated violence-addicted idiot" or maybe "American Soldier."  It's also interesting how the large audience (presumably his platoon), uniformly breaks up with laughter when he sings about shooting innocent women and children. I would not use "sick fuck." I would use "callous uneducated violence-addicted idiot" or maybe "American Soldier." It's also interesting how the large audience (presumably his platoon), uniformly breaks up with laughter when he sings about shooting innocent women and children. The few the proud and the brave indeed. They are callous for sure. Were I in their spot, I would be as well. I would also laugh. Laughing helps. I would also harbor ill will toward Iraqis. The reactions are way more complex then they are laughing at the shooting of innocent women and children. It is certainly inappropriate for mass consumption. _____________________

The Marine Corp goes to great length and expense to condition them to kill without remorse. Overwhelming force is the standard doctrine. This training desensitizes them to things involving death. Why do you think they are such outstanding warriors?. Frankly only a suicidal fool would take a pot shot at a squad of Marines, because they would respond with extreme violence and absolutely no mercy (and rightfully so really). When these guys get back from a combat area, the Marine Corp actually makes them go through a special “class” to help them get back into “don't kill” mode. The down side of this is that they make videos like this one. I am sure they honestly don't see anything wrong with it. Death is what they do, it's their job. We all joke about our jobs, so why wouldn't they joke about theirs? When I used to work in a pharmacy we made really inappropriate jokes between ourselves, but would never dream of letting anyone outside the pharmacy hear them. Does that make things like this video ok? Well, I don't know if I would go that far, but I also don't think I would condemn them for it. I think if I was their CO I would be more inclined to say something like “What the hell is wrong with you boy, don't put this shit on the web for everyone else to see!” |

I can bring MANY arguments against that point of view, not the least of which is that the American people are PAYING for this war, with our dollars and with our blood. We have EVERY right to know what's going on. It isn't about your right to know what is going on. It is about people doing things that are rather ugly for their own amusement (not anything illegal, mind you, just unpopular and unlikely to be widely cheered) being brought to the general public in the same way we would disect public speech. I really don't give a crap that you think you have some right to know what the marines do for amusement and to lighten the burden. The point was that it was meant for an audience of people that would enjoy it and who did enjoy it. They certainly have a right to say some ugly shit if they want. You aren't paying for this war with your blood, but he may with his. EDIT: Either way, it was a bad turn of phrase on my part. I didn't intend it to mean it shouldn't be seen, I meant that it was tasteless and not likely to be seen in the same light by a mass audience as the folks it was intended for. _____________________

The thing that tipped my mind over this issue, is that all you have to do is imagine it's some other group than the Iraqi civilians and instantly you see how inappropriate it is. If he was singing about killing Jews or blacks or pretty much any other group of innocent people that were thought to be "dead funny" because of their nationality it would be an outrage. I understand how this kind of black humor can arise at the time, similar stuff went around in World War II although the only ones I have heard weren't half as bad as this. In WWII this is the kind of thing that a few low-class soldiers might laugh about guiltily in private but no one would ever defend it if it came out, even those propagating it. Here we have what seems like a large group of what is supposed to be the "cream of the crop" of Americas army not only finding such trash quite hilarious, but completely unashamed of themselves. The fact that there have been quite a few long bigoted threads in the forums in the last week or so about the supposedly sub-human middle easterners and arabs and that almost no one even thinks *that* is wrong, is kind of alarming to me. There is a big pattern here. I guess no one really thinks of themselves as a bigot when they are actually acting like one, it's only from the "outside" that its so obvious. I find the fact that no one is really apologizing for the song and that lots of folks are defending it almost worse than the act itself. There is just no sense that anyone really feels it was anything wrong. They just seem irritated that they "got caught" at it. Once you've lost your honor and your humanity, you've lost it all IMO. Apologies for the jab at the Marines, but AFAIK that's exactly what the marines are *supposed* to be about. Honorable, proud uber-humans just don't find this kind of stuff funny, or at least they aren't supposed to. Marines are also not supposed to make excuses or hide behind their "stress." Far from constantly goading the man to perform the song in public as he says they did, a "real" marine (even if he privately saw the humor in it), would have told him to keep it to himself and any "real" marine in the audience would have stood up and stopped the performance IMO. Get off your high horses, it's just a joke song made by a guy who was in Iraq sung for a bunch of other guys to have a few laughs. One particular poster above makes me sick with a holier than thou attitude damning this guy who was just hanging out with other marines after fighting and some of them dieing, trying to blow off some stream with a few beers and some laughter amongst themselves. This was not sung with, or posted to the Internet to promote an agenda. Are any of you saying you've never ever made an off color joke about a bad situation? Really? Thanks to Mass Media, the whole world is now privy to what the military does to relax or just goof off. Ever stop to think what went on in other wars like Korea, Vietnam, WWII, WWI, Civil War, and other wars? Do people not think there were jokes about stuff like shooting people & civilians back then? I would not use "sick fuck." I would use "callous uneducated violence-addicted idiot" or maybe "American Soldier." It's also interesting how the large audience (presumably his platoon), uniformly breaks up with laughter when he sings about shooting innocent women and children. That's about all I can see that he did "wrong"... punishing him for the song itself would be about as stupid as the "dont ask, don't tell" policy...
