From: Garoad Kuroda It took you 8 pages to figure that one out? What the hell are they talking about anyway? Is this one of those cooperative "novel writing" threads now? *goes back to trolling lighter threads* I don't know. I gave up back around where I sang "God Bless America." coco

From: Garoad Kuroda What the hell are they talking about anyway? I dunno. I thought we were talking about apple pie. Crusty, and white fruit on the inside with the red peel removed. But hell, I'm on so many people's ignore list these days, it's easy to get confused.

From: Iridian Oz Are you sure you mean me (Iridian), and not Introvert? I haven't addressed you in this thread... I'm sorry. I was shaken, not stirred. I went back and edited it.

From: Arcadia Codesmith I bowed out of the fight. I told people to go to primary sources and make up their own minds. I admitted to no particular expertise on the topic. And I stated my views, and stepped away from the soapbox.
Here's the problem, you most assuredly did not bow out of the "the fight" as your formerly last post was nationalism is not a natural outgrowth of tribal xenophobia (a weak force at best), but an artificial construct introduced only in post-agricultural societies to consolidate the power of the ruling elite, and carefully cultivated to the extent that even trained observers are now too influenced by it to recognize how artificial it truely is. Which is roughly equivalent to "you intentionally self-blinding oppressive elite"; that's not a view, it is false victimization. From: someone Then you sucker-punched me. Granted insofar as you consider a post that begins "But you keep contesting my statements with handwaving yet providing no actual information nor answers to my questions, so you may fairly consider this an irritated retort." a sucker-punch. From: someone Was that really necessary? No, I'm not an expert, but I'm a layperson who has formed her own opinions based on the material that I've read. If I'm a crank, so be it. This isn't a peer-review journal. Then stop impugning the sources cited as "reactionary tripe from borderline academics trying desperately to preserve the white male Eurocentric world-view." Using the rhetoric of peer-review but taking umbrage when your respondant does the same is disingenous at best. From: someone Again, I invite anybody who is interested to look at primary source material (from the horse's mouth, as they say) and reach their own conclusions. Which you haven't provided. Which I might add is also the rhetoric of peer-review minus the substance. Here's my issue, you come out with a decidely agenda-based, pseudo-scholarly, unsupportable thesis about victimization by "the man", deride people who actually do care about the subject, and then pretend as if being called out on it is further oppression. Did the Eurpoean 17th century conquests of the Americas occur? Hell yeah, I've even granted that point as do all the scholars I've cited. Was it a Bad Thing? From our current perspective, absolutely. Do centuries old injustices legitimize the re-invention of history? Nope, not for a moment. Do these same injustices legitimize panning genuine attempts to understand what caused the opression and genocide in order that we may learn from past errors in effort to never do so again? Nope to that too. Past victimization is a repugnant justification for vilifying exactly the people who are working to ensure that it doesn't happen again and is tantamount to saying "the ancestors of X screwed Y, so now the decendents of Y ought screw the descendents of X". That sort of thinking results in millenium long blood feuds (e.g. the Middle East) and ought be opposed by all who would seek peace, not embraced as a justification for redressing wrongs long past. The past is past and irrevocably so and all the wishing otherwise will not change it. Working openly toward understanding why such things happened at least stands a chance of helping us correct our thinking so that it is not repeated.

From: Introvert Petunia Here's the problem, you most assuredly did not bow out of the "the fight" as your formerly last post was nationalism is not a natural outgrowth of tribal xenophobia (a weak force at best), but an artificial construct introduced only in post-agricultural societies to consolidate the power of the ruling elite, and carefully cultivated to the extent that even trained observers are now too influenced by it to recognize how artificial it truly is. Preceeding that passage: From: someone My conclusion is not the only one, but I believe it to be true: And following that passage: From: someone Maybe seeing the same material, you'll reach opposite conclusions. That's fine. I don't know of any more graceful way to say, "people can reach different conclusions from reviewing the same material". I also believe that there is a political agenda, reactionary in nature, unlying much scholarship since the ascension of the Reagan/Bush dynasty, and certain politically-motivated shifts in academic funding. Feel free to attribute this belief to unfounded paranoia, if you wish. I'm afraid it causes my rhetoric to get a bit too colorful from time to time, and for that I apologize. Beyond that, I'm at a loss. I've admitted I don't have any acedemic credentials to debate the issue, and presented my beliefs without support. Why waste time discrediting somebody with no credentials to begin with? May your path be thrice blessed.

I think, despite the revisionist history, we still have many things in common that we can celebrate.

I propose the new attitude toward Americans in this forums be:
Casual Disinterest.
Let me try it out. I'm not really an expert yet, so forgive me if I mess it up. Okay, here goes.
"Yeah, those Americans. Does anybody listen to Crystal Method's weekly show on Indie 103.1? It is broadcast over the internet too. Smokin' Wayne has a good reggae and dub show too on the same station every week as well. But man, I cannot stand Henry Rollins or his show. What were you talking about? Oh right, Americans. Oh, I almost forgot, Rob Zombie has a show on that same station but he always plays really odd music."

From: Chance Abattoir I propose the new attitude toward Americans in this forums be:
Casual Disinterest. I suppose it beats, "Bemused Exasperation" and is a big improvement on "Murderous Hatred". I have to confess, America makes some really, really great pizza. This is one of the many things I love about my homeland.

From: Tang Lightcloud Is this thread about anti-Americans, hard candy, or my neighbors cousin who I have locked up in the basement? I'd prefer pecan pie.

From: Talen Morgan While this may be true they should still be held accountable for letting her loose on the world... Oh no! Canada is not a Jail. We dont try to keep people in. Its your job to keep people out of your country if you dont want them. Mean while, we are doing our best to prevent her return...

From: Beau Perkins I am growing tired of the many verbal attacks on us Americans on this forum as if it is OK. If I sat here and bashed people from your countries, I would get a warning in the blink of an eye. I would possibly even get banned. I am a patriotic person, I love my country. I might not like the current administration but the great thing about America is eventualy this administration will be out the door by default.
I am not refering to comments about our governement though. I am refering to Americans as people. I have been reading many things here that are direct attacks on us. I take it personal and I would appreciate the respect of it stopping now. Like I said, if the shoe was on the other foot and it was me making comments about Brits, Chinesse, Ausies, Germans or any other culture, I wouldnt have the same freedom of expression. I am Anti-George W. Bush. George H.W. Bush was a pretty good President. At least he was a lot better than Boy George. And All the people in the Blue States are super good.

That was a rather gratuitous bump of a 2 month dead thread. But that's ok, it'll give some people a good excuse to bitch and point fingers again while offering up precisely no evidence for this supposed Anti-American forum flavor that exists. I think Taco said it best: From: Taco Rubio I, for one, think Americans get it pretty easy, considering how f'ing retarded we are. As people.

Well, it gave me the opportunity of reading Ellie Edo's postings again, which were pretty much ignored in the thread, but which said the only thing worth saying. She is quite right about the oceanic feeling of belonging to something greater than oneself, a seductive feeling which can, and often does, lead to the very worst of which human beings are capable.
