Reading through this thread had me wondering just *how* rude the 'C'-word (to avoid offending anybody) really is. One google later came up with this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A753527 Well, I found it interesting anyway! ![]() |

Last I heard Charlotte's puter (mac mini?) wouldn't run SL anymore. She complained about it on irc when 1.6 came out. But yeah, I'd like to see her back too

Reading through this thread had me wondering just *how* rude the 'C'-word (to avoid offending anybody) really is. I find it horrendously rude. I don't think it's necessarily because of the generation to which I belong, as younger members of my family wouldn't use it either. Nor do I use the 'f' word, though it's marginally less offensive. Persephone and Charlotte, welcome to my Ignore list. _____________________

*shrug* where I come from it's a term of endearment. At least, I think it is, cuz everyone calls everyone else it.

I work in an IT Department and this is certainly the case amongst the males that work with me - and male friends I have outside of work. Maybe a quirk of UK culture Kris? ![]() |

Maybe a quirk of UK culture Kris? ![]() Well I certainly think it has a different 'strength' of offending tone depending on where you are. And probably your age. And as you say, very likely profession or certainly work atmosphere. But seriously, I hear it ALL the time. Day in, day out, several times hourly. So it's such a diluted word to me I don't think twice about it. |

But seriously, I hear it ALL the time. Day in, day out, several times hourly. So it's such a diluted word to me I don't think twice about it. I'd agree with this completely. It reminds me of Stephen Fry appearing on Michael Parkinson's chat show and being asked to explain the use of swearing in one of his books. Fry explained that the use of swearing in his eyes is also purely emphatic. He put it something like (can't find an actual quote)... "The phrase 'I can't sing' does not convey the level of sheer frustration and anguish caused by the situation in quite the same way as 'I can't f**king sing'. The environment (possibly the generation too) that I grew up in, and the industry in which I work mean that swearing has little meaning to me beyond emphasis of a particular topic or to stress the emotional content of what is being said. I know where the words originate from, what they mean now, and the various meanings they've had in the past - yet I really can't say that I find them personally offensive in and of themselves. If used against me, say in an argument, it will be the emotion behind what is being said that they will convey, rather than me feeling personally insulted because of the individual word itself. Oddly, and partly because of the above, I don't tend to swear much myself. You know I am very, very upset if I do! ![]() |

Intolerange:
a cook stove that will only allow certain skilled chefs to use it. Anyone not within its factory set tolerance levels will get burned, baked and then poked in the ash. _____________________

Intolerange: a cook stove that will only allow certain skilled chefs to use it. Anyone not within its factory set tolerance levels will get burned, baked and then poked in the ash. Free Easy Bake Ovens for the cooking skills challenged! No more burning, baking and poking (don't get me wrong, I did some of that in college and it can be fun, I just don't want anyone getting hurt). _____________________
