This post isn't directed towards anyone in particular, except perhaps the person who actually made the decision to bar me from accessing these forums over the last weekend. On Friday morning, I received an email from Linden Lab informing me of the following: From: Linden Lab From: support@secondlife.com To: ******@mac.com
Violation: Forum Suspension: Intolerance
We value an open environment in which residents feel free to express themselves, even when their views may not be popular.
Combatting intolerance is a cornerstone of Second Life’s Community Standards because expression that marginalizes, belittles, or defames individuals or groups inhibits their ability to take part in a satisfying exchange of ideas and diminishes the community as whole.
The use of derogatory or demeaning language in reference to racial, ethnic, or social groups is never allowed in Second Life or the Second Life Forums.
You have been suspended from the forums for three (3) days and will not be able to access the forums. Please note you will still be able to access other portions of the web site and the Second Life software. The pompous, arrogant nature of this email, as well as its inherent hypocrisy, insults me. I have spent countless years campaigning, fighting, marching against the words and actions of intolerant and racist individuals, groups and governments. To send me a mealy-mouthed email informing me that pulling up an American for being ignorant of anything beyond his borders was "intolerant" is simply out of order. Do you really, really think that if I "used derogatory or demeaning language in reference to ethnic, racial or social groups" I'd be able to live in London? My views may not be popular, but according to Linden Lab, I have the right to express them. Not.

are you sure it's not in part due to your insistence on calling everyone a cunt?

Charlotte,
I am not in favour of forum censorship. But it really does seem to me that someone who habitually addresses other individuals and groups in an insulting and demeaning manner should not be surprised when they finally get called on it.

From: Kris Ritter are you sure it's not in part due to your insistence on calling everyone a cunt? Kris, it's a nail-on-the-head moment. I call everyone a cunt. Et voila: no discrimination.

From: Charlotte Gillespie Kris, it's a nail-on-the-head moment. I call everyone a cunt. Et voila: no discrimination. Everyone? I've never seen you call a male that word. I'm curious... in London, does that word NOT have the overtly sexually charged, misogenistic, degrading meaning? In the USA, that's one of the words that can't be used on TV or Radio under any circumstance, let alone be directed at someone in name-calling. If so, how many people have to ask you to not use that word before it's considered derogatory?

From: Charlotte Gillespie Kris, it's a nail-on-the-head moment. I call everyone a cunt. Et voila: no discrimination. Yeah, Charlotte, but remember, people from 'minority groups' - or even majority groups - will use that to cry foul to highlight your imagined intolerance against them. Because people are assholes like that. Ya know, like Nolan saying I'm racist for making fun of random americans, when in fact, and like you, I dont give a second thought what little groups people huddle into so that they can accuse you of intolerence towards 'their people', and I will make fun of anyone who's being a twat regardless. (surely its racist or intolerant to discriminate even positively about someone tho?! 'I better not pick on him, he's from Pakistan/he's disabled/he's a gay quilter'). Same deal; you're a brit. You call an american a cunt and you're being an intolerant racist, right? Geddit now?

From: someone Do you really, really think that if I "used derogatory or demeaning language in reference to ethnic, racial or social groups" I'd be able to live in London? yep. when i went to London i personally heard........ - "fucking pakis"
- numerous insulting references to homosexuals
- "stupid bint" which i found out doesn't just mean "girl" like i thought
- french people referred to as "frogs"
- irish people called "micks"
- personally got called a mollywog which i found out 2 years later is an ethnic slur
- and personally got called "colored" which is offensive where i'm from alltho i don't know if it is in england
that's in addition to all the regular every day insults people use when they don't mean anything specific other than they don't like somebody. maybe the queen doesn't use those words (be around when she drops something on her foot ) but i've been all over the world and i've never been any place they didn't "use derogatory or demeaning language in reference to ethnic, racial or social groups". sorry London.

You've never called -me- a cunt, Charlotte. ._. Anyway, as stupid as it may seem, it is sometimes better to just bite your tongue on forums. Woo @ fake happy environments, I know, but I also know you're a very nice girl inworld and I think people would really like you if you didn't, like, go around swearing and yelling. Even if you don't care if people like you or not, it really is more fun sometimes to just skip it instead of making a scene. Really, I mean, isn't it better to let people make fools of themselves on their own? Just sit back and laugh, my friend. No need to add anything. Some stupidity speaks for itself.

Zuzi, <<"fucking pakis" numerous insulting references to homosexuals "stupid bint" which i found out doesn't just mean "girl" like i thought french people referred to as "frogs" irish people called "micks" personally got called a mollywog which i found out 2 years later is an ethnic slur and personally got called "colored" which is offensive where i'm from alltho i don't know if it is in england>> Yes, you are quite right; you will find as much racial prejudice in London as you will anywhere else; more probably than most places. It is a pecularity of the English in particular to congratulate ourselves on being exceptionally tolerant while actually being the opposite. In reference to your list: I think most people over here think that 'bint' means woman, and although it's not a particularly complimentary reference, it's not generally intended as an insulting one. I always thought it was an Arabic word, binti, meaning woman. 'Mollywog' is a word I have never heard in my entire life. No idea what it is or what it means. Certainly not a word in general use over here. The word 'coloured' is offensive now, but it was the politically correct term when I was younger. Many older people use it thinking they are being respectful. But as far as the rest go, you are quite correct, unfortunately.

Certainly not a word in general use over here. for a long time i thought it was just a made up joke name like calling somebody Chuckles or something. then i found it in a dictionary of rude words (fun reading hehe) and basically it's a female wog which is a derogatory term for aborigines or blacks. i guess slurs can get pretty obscure. sooooo....getting back on topic don't call people that. they'll think it's funny for 2 years then they'll be mad.

Its interesting to me that the English - who historically went out to control the world - will demean just about everyone in it except themselves - and they are even suspect to each other.
I think its the legacy of capitalism - its in our hearts and minds - and something to 'train' out of each of us - whether English now or descendents - long exiled to the 'new' world. It is a history that whispers "we are better then they are" and so what is theirs is inherently ours. Its an arrogance that has gone unchecked for centuries.
On top of that - there is the world wide use of women - wives, mothers, single females - to degrade...its a built in ego boost for all who need that. So, I may be crazy... but the word 'cunt' may be perceived as the lowest thing you can be or call someone - well that or 'cocksucker'.
I think its HIGH TIME the word CUNT gets the liberation it deserves!!! I am proud to be a cunt and hope that others will rise up and stomp on those who don't like the word.
heh heh heh... COW = new SL group "Cunts of the World" - if you call someone a cunt in the future... it will be a sign of respect. Join now.. if enough respond... hell I may actually start this group.

sorry for the confusion. a dumpster is one of those big metal boxes for trash (rubbish) they haul around with trucks (lorries). i dunno the UK word for it or i'd translate. not that it's relevant in the least.

From: Willow Zander Yus I know what dumpster is, but cum dumpster Zuzi, you are making me nervous.... I don't WANT to go to my bin one day and discover its spammed with sperm.... This depends on where you live of course - in some places communal bins are covered in nothing else but sperm, condoms and needles. Nice, eh? Charlotte - intolerance !=racism. Intolerance can be as simple as not being tolerant. However I think that missing out the rest of the world, similar to being described as "international", is pretty intolerant. Do you know in 1.6 we may be able to use our own wretched keyboards? They still won't have a phone number we can call from here, but it's a start. If I was building a metaverse (whatever that is) I would have considered the rest of the world from the beginning. Ho hum.

This post got me to click on the "find other posts by Charlotte Gillespie" in your profile. This post in itself is a violation of the Basic Forum Policies and Etiquette found in the Forum Guidelines. A lot, not a few, a lot, of your other posts qualify as violations as well. I assume that your ban is a result of of numerous examples, not a single instance. A ban should be a heads up, because you could face a permanant ban from all of Second Life. Im not trying to be a smartass or anything, but you asked why, and this is my opinion. You should look over the forum guidelines and decide if its worth your time being here in the forums on your current path and risk not being here or in SL at all.
