And why do we have "meat eating" teeth??? Actually, humans dont have meat eater teeth. Most of our teeth are flat molars designed to chew plants. Humans are designed to eat plants. Try eating a steak sometime without using a knife and you will begin to see what I mean. Our teeth and digestive system are far better able to handle plants than meat. But, we can and do eat meat. We have adapted to doing that. I am not a vegatarian, I eat meat almost daily. But, from a design standpoint, humans are best suited to eat plants. |

Actually we're omniverous (herbivore and carnivore). That's why we hunted woolly mammoth, after all. And also why I can digest steak after I eat it.

I wont debate the advantages to eating meat, but that doesnt change my mind that humans are best suited for plant eating.

Most of our teeth are flat molars designed to chew plants. Except for those sharp pointy ones in the front...that help rip into meat Our front teeth slice, dice, rip and chop. Knives are for manners, we could eat steak without them. We are omnivores and are designed to eat both meat and non-meat foods as Lordfly stated. I just did a bit of quick research and found that there are omnivore primates as well as herbivore primates (as I suspected). If we were not meant to eat meat it would do us no good to do so, but it does. Our bodies are meant to handle certain amounts of meat. More non-meat, I'll give you that, but still some meat. |

But, from a design standpoint, humans are best suited to eat plants. au contrair, we have canine's, anyway, humans are incapable of digesting left handed sugars (or is it right handed) such as the cellulose that plant cell walls are made out of. Our evolutionary ancestors were not all herbivores either, in fact our binocular vision indicates depth perception was probably a pretty important to our survival and that's usually the case with predators. oh and did I mention I loooove jerky ![]() _____________________

If animals aren't supposed to be eaten, why are they made out of meat ? ![]() It would be an interesting world to live in, if things that you weren't supposed to do were impossible to do. This is quite clearly not the world we live in. In fact that's the whole point of morality - getting people to not do things they might want to do otherwise. It isn't very hard to steal, it isn't even very hard to kill people. Morality is not based on the difficulty/possiblity of doing something. _____________________

Does that mean that the life of a plant has less value than the life of an animal? How about my life? _____________________

I think all of us omnivores have just been called immoral. No, no. Well, that wasn't my intention. The question was originally phrased as "If animals aren't supposed to be eaten...", and "supposed to be" is a moral issue. I'm merely saying that you can't counter a moral stance that you shouldn't do something with some observation about it being possible to do that thing. I wasn't saying anything about whether or not I subscribe to the premise. For the record, I am mostly but not entirely vegetarian. Does that mean that the life of a plant has less value than the life of an animal? How about my life? _____________________

In the 4.5 billion year history of Earth, humans have been around for a tiny fraction of that time. During that time, we have been able to defend ourselves from animal predators for probably only a fairly short time. The animal kingdom has had plenty of time to feast on our old, slow, young, weak and stupid. In the last few thousand years, we have turned the tables on them. Its payback now. That's what they get for eating our ancestors and being so tasty.
