Oops. You went back to the ad hominem tu quoque fallacy. ![]() ~Ulrika~ No, Ulrika, I am not. If you are going to criticize people for consumerism and what they are supporting, make sure that your house is in order. As it is not, it seems quite silly for you to be lecturing anyone on the evils of consumerism. _____________________

As it is not, it seems quite silly for you to be lecturing anyone on the evils of consumerism. ![]() As I said before, if I were putting together a tight argument regarding the subject of ethical consumption, in this post I would state the proven predatory behavior of MS, their unequaled-in-the-history-of-business monopoly, and their tendency to adopt and then break standards. I'd then give a list of companies that MS has put out of business, finishing with the recent (uncorrelated!) loss of Sega from the gaming market. I might even throw in a reference to Netscape. I'd finish with the tenet that future behavior correlates strongly with past behavior and build a moral argument based on utilitarianism that one must select from the lesser of evils. I would then demonstrate how MS does not qualify as the lesser of evils in any of its business units. ~Ulrika~ _____________________

Please do illustrate how in the gaming console market that Sony, and not Microsoft, is the lesser of evils. _____________________

Can't we all just get along and agree that the Dreamcast had funny looking controllers?

To give you an idea of what you're up against, we own neither. ![]() We do own a Nintendo Gamecube as it was the lesser of evils and we will be purchasing a Revolution when it comes out as well. ~Ulrika~ LOL I didn't see that one coming, you never fail to surprise, ZugZug.I plan on purchasing a Revolution as well, and have the little purple lunchbox, which secretly, I only bought to play Animal Crossing and Pikmin (but I won't admit to Mario Sunshine). _____________________

I loved Habitat! I was never on it (altho I was on Q-Link) and am just starting to realize how valuable that document I linked to is. I thot about SL's future a lot in the last few days, and then found that link on Google. I wouldn't say "prophetic", but wow.. We had imposed very few rules on the world at the start. There was much debate among the players as to the form that Habitat society should take. At the core of much of the debate was an unresolved philosophical question: is an Avatar an extension of a human being (thus entitled to be treated as you would treat a real person) or a Pac-Man-like critter destined to die a thousand deaths or something else entirely? Is Habitat murder a crime? Should all weapons be banned? Or is it all "just a game"? To make a point, one of the players took to randomly shooting people as they roamed around. The debate was sufficiently vigorous that we took a systematic poll of the players. The result was ambiguous: 50% said that Habitat murder was a crime and shouldn't be a part of the world, while the other 50% said it was an important part of the fun. _____________________

Nope. Our only electronic vice is an Apple G5 with a 23" Cinema HD display. Aside from that we are using a 12-year-old TV, 15-year-old stereo equipment, and virtually no consumer media (CDs and DVDs). We dropped out of the consumer lifestyle years ago and are richer and happier for it. ![]() Additionally, as you could probably guess just from what you know of me from the forums, I'm quite dedicated to avoiding sending my money to corporations that are in the business of oppression. Thus, an Xbox from Wal-Mart is a double sin. As a matter of fact, this is the sole reason I play SL. It has a MacOS client and uses Linux servers. But none of that makes any sense. What is wealth, if it is not the possession of property? Paper money, or its representation in a bank, is not wealth, it is merely the social token we exchange for goods and services, and is no longer even backed by gold or silver. It's just an ephemeral, fictional number. Only by purchasing goods can you convert this fictional number into true wealth. And happier without videogames? I think not, though I suppose that depends on age. I saw some article this morning that tried to call these fetuses in their teens and 20s the "videogame generation". If someone said that to my face, I'd smack them. I grew up with Odyssey2, Intellivision, and Atari VCS. Punks these days don't even know what a Yar is, let alone why it would seek revenge. Their games all have "stories" and "endings" and "save points", because baby cries if he gets hurt. Proper videogames don't have endings or multiple screens. They just have one screen, and they just get harder and faster until you die, just like life*. Now, old people might have an excuse; they weren't raised with videogames, so they don't have reflexes and it takes them several seconds to react to anything, by which time they'd be dead. So probably they just play a lot of Myst. Happier without media? A life without new music and movies and old TV shows on DVD is not worth living. Where's the soundtrack and context for your life, if not in media? You think 20 hours of your dull normal life is going to be one-quadrillionth as interesting as, say, American Gothic (now out on DVD!)? As AIRWOLF?!? Don't talk crazy talk. Now, not owning an Xbox, that's just good common sense. A) It's by Microsoft, and only a fool allows a Microsoft product into their home. B) There are few or no exclusives for it that are worth playing. C) There are many exclusives for PS2 and GameCube which are worth playing. Therefore, one should own a PS2 and a GameCube, combined cost of which is less than the Xbox. * All hail Ernie Cline. _____________________

I also wanted to also point out that the above rationalization is similar to those used by individuals who shop at Wal-Mart, purchase gas-guzzling SUVs from car companies, or support the RIAA through media purchases. Consumption is what enables these corporations to exploit workers and export costs onto society; to negatively affect our environment, safety, and resources; and restrict our freedom to use media that we own how we want. If people consumed wisely, companies would change their behavior accordingly. ~Ulrika~ Consumption also has raised S. Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan up from poverty to plenty. Consumption drives much of the world economy. There are fewer people in poverty in countries that have harnessed consumption. There are inequalities, but your stupid consumer is some one else's source of income. I can't stand Wal-Mart, and I love Apple. And I'm fond of Sony and Nokia too. Microsoft? Eh. I'll probably not buy an x-box, never seem to have the time to play console games on the tv, but if more people lived like you Ulrika, there'd be a lot more unemployed. |

After all the waiting in the cold, fighting and clueless store managers, some have had to put up with this. Exactly why I will never be the first on my block with brand new technology.

I buy Apple products because they are huge advocates of transgender rights in the workplace.
I don't have an Xbox --but I have this great bootleg device that I bought in china town that allows me to play 64 different old Atari games. It cost me 20$. When I bought my ipod nano --I keyed it --cos I knew it would get scratchy anyways. _____________________

I can understand waiting in line for food for your family, essentials. Possibly, if you have hungry children to come home to, even fighting over your order in the line.
But fist fighting over your order in line or even waiting in line for a frigging piece of wire and plastic??? ![]() How is it THAT important? More important than the safety of another human? The whole thing gives me the creeps, like some episode of the Twilight Zone. After the hurricane, I was riding around on my bicycle and I noticed this really weird thing, lines would just start out of nowhere and people would get into them and not even know why they were in them, but they were in them because they did not want to miss out on getting something free. Gas stations that were not even going to open would have a line of cars and people would begin screaming at each other and then the cops would show up. WTF? Frankly, I think the manager of that particular Wallmart should be fired, and perhaps cities should even consider ordinances that prohibit people from lining up so that they can stampeed like a bunch of cows into a store. ![]() . _____________________
