When was the last time you used a floppy disk?

I have my Windows XP Pro saved on diskettes (just in case the absolute worst happens). I don't know what else to use them for other than with linux.

I guess I'm a bit of a skeptic for online storage also, since they're not 100% protected. CDs carry too much space in them for something for storing photos and things like that...

But I guess the Iomega REV Drives look good, they're a bit in between.

floppies might be the right size but for reliability/durrability, ick.

This actually made me recall an "incident" I had when I was about 12 years old. It was a hot mid-80's summer day that me and my friend Rachel spent going swimming and playing Ultima III. I don't remember how it started, but somehow me and Rachel ended up having a throwing star battle with 5.25" floppies, and Rachel scored a direct hit to my stomach with the Mail Order Monsters floppy. Since I only had a bikini on, the 5.25 actually broke my skin and stuck a couple millimeters into me, hanging there.. >_< Those Nashua's had some damn sharp corners. :(

OMG!! I loved Mail Order Monsters!!!! Now I have the urge to fire up my C64 & play it!! Crap!! There's no UHF screws on the back of my TV!! :(

BTW- the computer opponents are really horrible at shooting diagonally. All they do is chase you. So run diagonally, turn & shoot, keep running. Repeat.;)

I use floppy disks on a regular basis, I love 'em. I can't stand burning 1-2mb of data onto a 700mb CD-R, nor do I like putting data on one that I'll only need once or twice. Zip disks are nice, too, but they're not common enough to use them for moving files around. And no, I don't own a USB drive, nor do I plan to acquire one unless I have money to spare. When I worked at a local ISP, I'd write stories that I didn't want my boss knowing about. The front desk computer didn't have a CD-R drive, and wouldn't recognize the USB drive that we used in the shop, and the office network's internet access was monitored (but unlimited). So, I wrote my stories in notepad, and saved them to a floppy with vague titles (a-01.txt). Worked perfectly for me.

I use floppies for giving files to friends and such, and running basic emergency spyware scans on computers (I keep my antivirus floppy disk with me almost all the time). Floppy drives are still useful for me in that regard because no matter how old the computer is, it will always recognize a floppy drive, even from DOS.

I use ZIP disks for personal backups, since they last a LOT longer than a CD-RW, and are much faster.

I use CD-Rs for burning CDs I know I'll use again, or for files that simply won't fit on anything else.

I don't use CD-RWs, and I'm not equipped for DVD-Rs right now. And USB drives are more trouble than they're worth, in my opinion.

I had a "Sure I don't mind fixing your computer for free" incident about a month ago.

A friend asked me to help her move from one computer to a new one because she wanted "Internet".

After internally sighing, I said yes.

Her total saved computer files from using her computer each day since 1999...

1.9 megabytes! Two floppies.

She would overwrite her spreadsheets and word files after printing them each month.

As someone who has used backups of sent emails three times to avoid our company being sued in the last ten years, it spun me out.

She asked me whether she should keep the two floppies as a backup? (just in case...)

I said "sure".

Well, I don't save anything on my computer either :)
My code is either in SL, or on a webserver - it only sits on my desktop temporarily while I am working on it.
My email is gmail... I don't even use MS Office at all. All the contacts I will ever need are on my cellphone.
I do have mp3s and stuff, but I can just download them again.
I really don't have a single file in "my documents"... sue me! :D

Recently, a BIOS flash and running memtest86, a memory testing program that boots off of a customized small Linux core, when I was having problems that ultimately were memory-related (stupid design+stupid user=intermittent reboots; unfortunately it was my system, so I was the "stupid user" in question).

In general, though, I occasionally use them for transfering files to a computer downstairs, used by the roomie that pays the rent. There's no network connection between the two computers, and since the other computer is connected via dialup online transfers aren't necessarily the fastest way.

(Though, both have Zip drives, so for bigger files that don't fit on floppies I use that.)

Nothing, PG, but thanks :)
I had no idea what it was when you sent it, so I took a look at it to see what it was, giggled, and closed the texture window again :)
