Hmm... I think I needed a boot disk when my HD was crapping out. This was... oh, I dunno... 8 years ago?

I don't remember the exact date but I last used one to upgrade the BIOS of a motherboard some months ago. But, my newest computer has a tower case with a placeholder for a floppy drive, but there's nothing there. I might feel I could get served better by getting one of those multiple-in-1 flash memory drives. Those are like, 2006 AD floppies. Hawt.
I guess we could dip them in liquid gold and wear them while chanting "DONT COPY THAT FLOPPY!" _____________________

Being a mac user my last two machines at home haven't had floppy drives in them.
I don't remember using the drive in the one before that. At work I *do* use them however - students seem to use floppies rather than memory sticks, so we have to use them occasionally. |

The last time i used a floppy was probably in about 2002, and it was as a projectile at my eldest who was giving me cheek.

A couple weeks ago I had to build up a Novell 5.x box. Novell 5.x doesn't support USB, so to get the license file on there I had to use a floppy
![]() 6.5 supports USB, but I still find myself using floppies out of old habit ![]() _____________________

Last time I used a floppy was over a year ago. I was using a Win98 boot disk at school. WinME is funny in that it says my old PC has a 5 1/4" drive although I don't have any floppy drive in it.

Not for about six years - anything that I want to move from one computer to another now I just put on a memory stick or send it via email if it is less secure. The last time I touched one was in November of this year while moving and that was to try and figure out the best way to destroy them before I moved so I would not have to lug them with me.

Whenever I last rebuilt my PC, since Windows still won't let you load RAID drivers from anywhere else.

I've only occasionaly had to boot etc. from floppies after I got a cd-recorder around 96 or so. I almost haven't used CDs for the past 6 years or so either.

Weird, yesterday! I hadn't in years, but we had a pc here that needed an NIC driver, and the cd drive was borked.
it felt so weird to use one, but it worked! _____________________

When I was giving a recent talk on how technology had advanced over the years. One part I was compairing a 3 1/2" I.44MB floppy to a 4GB SD card a quarter it's size.. man technology now!
Come to think about it, all my computers don't have a floppy drive! I guess card media readers are the in thing now. |

Come to think about it, all my computers don't have a floppy drive! I guess card media readers are the in thing now. For the past 4 years I've rarely used any computer with less than a 10Mbps internet connection, so I haven't really had much use for any portable media at all. I'm sure I'm not the only one. |

Oh I still find a need to use a floppy drive once in a while. Had to work on someone's computer that didnt have a CD-Rom (they were renting the computer) but had a floppy drive. Not all the PCs I've worked on ran the latest & greatest OS. Some still have Windows 98 (not SE either). About 2 were still using Windows NT 4, which doesnt support USB.
Then there are some things that just dont make sense to stick on a CD- like drivers for NICs. Why use all that space for something that even barely takes up 1.44 MB? And- Floppies are still dirt cheap! If you send out a lot of things like resumes, or like I did, have to turn one in to your college "job hunter" person, Do you really wanna let them keep that 128 MB Flash Drive? Just cuz they're old tech doesnt mean their useless just yet. Kinda like CRTs. ![]() _____________________

I never get tired of seething that. What I"m waiting for is a guy who happens to have a prosthetic hand that would fit into. Of course this hand would probably have a laser beam of doom or something.
