I used one late last year, at work. The POS computer I used at the time ran NT 4.0, and it was pretty well locked down. I could change simple things like resetting the time by booting from an old Windows 95 boot disk.

Actually, this morning.
I'm still using a Roland XP-50 workstation as one of my keyboards. Some of the music still is on the floppy in the built-in disk drive. _____________________

Today in class one of my students got on a computer clearly marked as not being connected to a printer and wrote a 5 page essay, then tried to print it. I have no knowledge of networking computers to printers, nor could I find the right cord to do this, but actually finding a floppy was the hardest part.

I had to use one because a client had a file that could only be found on their floppy disk.
Unfortunately my computer refused to read it. That was last month. ... But before then ... it must've been a couple of years. ![]() _____________________

If the computer you want to connect the printer to is part of the network, simply go into Start > Printers and Faxes > and share out the printer. You'll find it easier than you think. It just takes some thoughtful clicking. _____________________

I actually used a 1.44 floppy about an hour ago, as I build and pre-configure servers for a pharmacutical corporation. Once the server is racked, I pop a floppy into it which has NIC drivers, IP information of the server, and the IP information of the deployment server. Server boots up to the floppy, tells the NIC to connect to the deployment server, then starts pulling down and installing the OS from there.

Somebody get me a VLAN change! _____________________

I got a USB drive for christmas, so I would assume no more than a month prior to that.
I've been using the USB way more than I ever did floppys though. Sucks... I can't lie about not having my assignments or group files anymore, since they are always with me. _____________________

But a good merit for floppies- you can write, erase, write, erase....and so on many many many times. CD-RWs, much fewer. USB DRives, yea infinite... till you lose it. I had a friend stop by at the house & he needed a flashlight because it was dark out and he realized his USB Drive with all his college term papers wasn't attached to the keychain. He didn't find it. Hehehhehe!!! Would've never lost it as easily if it were a floppy disk. Ok... maybe.

I guess we could dip them in liquid gold and wear them while chanting "DONT COPY THAT FLOPPY!" Noooo! I actually had to watch that video in Jr High! No joke. ![]() _____________________

Sometime within the last hour, I was using one of my reliable DD disks (the particular one I was using is something like 12 years old now). I was copying some documents to the disk for backup (goes into a fireproof safe after). I guess old habits die hard.

Last summer at my old job. The secretary next door refused to use anything else. My boss, wierdly enough, also had a fetish for them and saved every one he could find. We had about 8 cases worth, just sitting around.

Today. I needed to make a boot disk. 3 of the friggen disks that previously worked all failed in succession (even the one that was previously an install disk for a game on Tandy) and I actually had to BUY floppies to complete the task. Urgh. Humiliation.

You know you can boot from CDs and USB pens, or even from the network card, depending on the card

Taking appart an old floppy and using the disk as a frisbee to throw around the office is always fun. ![]() Except for the papercuts. ![]() This actually made me recall an "incident" I had when I was about 12 years old. It was a hot mid-80's summer day that me and my friend Rachel spent going swimming and playing Ultima III. I don't remember how it started, but somehow me and Rachel ended up having a throwing star battle with 5.25" floppies, and Rachel scored a direct hit to my stomach with the Mail Order Monsters floppy. Since I only had a bikini on, the 5.25 actually broke my skin and stuck a couple millimeters into me, hanging there.. >_< Those Nashua's had some damn sharp corners. ![]() _____________________
