For those of us who have way too much computer power and feel guilyy just letting it sit there wasting CPU cycles when you aren't wasting braincells building bright pink dildoes in SecondLife, there is Einstein@Home. Much like SETI@Home, it is a program designed to use your unused computer power along with hundreds of thousands of other idle computers(in the case of SETI@Home, millions) on the net to form huge collective computers to do real science. I created a team for SecondLife resedents (or anyone for that matter) to promote SL and science. Einstein@home is a program that uses your computer's idle time to search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors. Einstein@home is a World Year of Physics 2005 project supported by the American Physical Society (APS) and by a number of international organizations. http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/If you want to join this team, follow this link: http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/create_account_form.php?teamid=3240

i'll have to check this link out.. after i sleep. i've been running Seti@home for years (up to 4237 data units now), it would be cool to run another space searching program, too! if i join, i'll post as such within this thread.. and join the SL team as well. (i'm already on the Seti@home SL team).

I used to be involved in SETI@Home (Solaris Central team), but once my PCs stopped running 24/7 I began to lose interest. The latest (aka generic) UNIX client also has issues with how we install software too.

I do SETI@Home now. When I get my new PC I will set that up to and have two PCs run the program at all times. Well the one I have now I may set up 24/7 running in the back. The new one will only do it in screen saver mode. Need that power for EQ2. Why would a team of Second Life players that gather together to promote SL be off topic?
Well good, that way my post can fade into obscurity even faster among the London bombing posts and hate bush posts...

So bump it.... it is basically off topic, it's about Einstein@Home, not SL the game or whatever. The community lives here, too! I'll join (maybe, depending on how much of a hassle it is.)

FIC? Hmm, maybe I have to actually finish a work unit before I show up. I guess I don't leave the computer running very much. Too bad, I'm using Alienware. I'll see if I notice "run always".

I set mine for run always, it doesnt appear to eat up too many resources, I can play sl fine. And yea you wont show up in the active members till you have completed a work unit, which means that 2 other comps have verified your work.

I leave it on all the time and haven't noticed any difference. I think if you have a computer worthy of SL, Boink isn't going to impact it a whole lot. Great to have y'all aboard

I am looking to get my two girls PCs later this year. Maybe I will put Einstein@Home or SETI@Home on it. I right now use SETI and my new PC will have SETI (got to get my numbers up) but maybe I will make my Girls' PCs both Einstein@Home that would mean I would have 2 for each. hmmmmmmmmmmm get my name out there faster. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
((bump))

Waste of power otherwise? Not to mention the fact that turning it off when at work/sleep is the ultimate security measure for those hours.

From: Garoad Kuroda Waste of power otherwise? Not to mention the fact that turning it off when at work/sleep is the ultimate security measure for those hours. Security I will give you. Power I will not. Turn on your power settings in Windows (if you’re a Mac I would have to say they have the same thing but unknown). Then when you are off the computer it will power down to a level that will use very little power. Start up uses allot of power. If you are only going to be off for 48 hr or less you have saved power. Any more then that is questionable. Side not on Security if it internet just unplug the internet and you are now just as secure. **Bump**
