Surely this is the opposite way from the way it should be? [where an empty cache works better than a full one]
Phenomenon confirmed.

I think they borked something badly in what they call the "interest list" as I can be in an empty sim looking at a grey something for minutes with zero network traffic. It is as if the client has no idea that it need to request the thing I'm looking at. This phenomenon has also been confirmed by a second source. I really love this black-box debugging work, especially as according to a recent Development Update Announcement, the number one priority at present is:
From: Karen Linden
1. There is a long-standing issue with Linden-owned Welcome Area and Sandbox regions showing up in the traffic (dwell) counts, even though they should not. We are working on a resolution for this problem now.
These days I just try to picture the LL staff with big red rubber balls worn on their noses. It makes me feel better.

With all those people logged in at once, though, maybe all Linden Labs needs is a massive bandwidth upgrade?
From what I've been able to test from outside, bandwidth is a problem but not a big one.

Since at least 1.7 they've been tweaking all types of client and server priorities to try and keep the asset server from 'sploding. As the system is complex enough to defy analysis, I think this has become a trial-and-error approach and you, sir, are the guinea pig.

mmm thinking of deleting my textures and making all my builds using grey. That way it won't notice. The grey phenomenon certainly gets much worse as more people log on.

Here is my question. How can my performance go from good to crap in ONE DAY with the only change being the last upgrade? I had no problem with 1.8.0.8 but 1.8.0.9 and I am haveing packet loss in most sims around 70% and as high as 400% in others. It is not my ISP or my computer, because I have the same problems with anothre computer on the same ISP. My ISP is getting 3Mbps to San Fransisco, but SL reports 70kbps. I get chat 20 minutes later. I am looking for an answers. Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is a confirmed thing now with the textures and I am sure LL is going to release an update within this month of January.

How's the object rendering speed and texture loading speed doing since 1.8.1(6)?

People with nothing better to do could turn on the Debug Console and see if they see any out of order packet messages or playing bac delayed packet messages when textures don't load quickly enough.

textures slide a notch down
01-13-2006 15:39
Since the new download I am actually experiencing slower rez on textures particularly on objects and thankfully not so much on avies as I design and do photography in SL. I have just built a new store and prior to the new update I was actually doing ok. Sure, textures don't load as fast as they did pre 1.7 but it wasn't terrible. Now, i no longer see grass and all the objects on my land remain grey far longer than they did a few days ago. A few seconds rez time has turned in to a few minutes. I am on same system with same settings but I am sure it is my fault. Maybe I don't have the same attitude? Perhaps, its my new haircut? Whatevah, one thing is certain it has nothing to do with LL and everything to do with me.

I bought a router to replace my old hub, and I don't seem to be getting the out of order packet messages anymore.

Unfortunately I still see gray loading textures and still have very very slow rendering, so if I fly though a city at unaided flight speed I don't get the illusion of a persistent virtual world at all, it is very obviously being draw just barely before you run into it, if that fast.

Sigh.

Overtaxed system or just bugs?, saw 4380 ish online last night , and well took about 5 - 15 min to rez a skin ;p

pre 1.7 big big diffrence in texture load, now im greeted by grayness, eh least im in europe so im out of SL before everyone start logging in , and crawwwl.

Was in a sim last night, 4 people in entire sim, took about 30 min to rez entire , and no it wasnt even using all the prims in sim -.- nor was it much textures.

Ill peek in debug, cause i have nothing else to do in SL anymore.

Since the new update things did get faster, but some areas I goto the lag is so bad it's not even fun to walk around and just look at stuff. Nothing makes me more mad than when I see a total of 10 people on and entire sim and I can getting like 10FPS on a 3.5Ghz processor with 1gig of ram.

Check known issues...this kind of long texture loading looks like it may be (mostly?) fixed with the next release!!!

So I'm reassured to find out that it's NOT my PC and it's NOT the norm! I'll be pleased if and when things sort themselves out and I can start enjoying SL.

Meh...Inventory not loading now
01-21-2006 03:35
I have over 15000 items in my inventory.

Things HAVE gotten unbearably sloggy the last few days.

But now...Im not even getting 5000 items fetched in inventory..and its 5:32 AM CST here...and if I was EVER gonna get SL to play right..it should be now.

Alas...no luck...

As always...an update around the corner..and SL has become murky pond water.

Sighs...this is getting so old.

With all due respect..instead of more fine people hired as Lindens..how about investing in some REAL infrastructure to let paying customers enjoy themselves.

It's getting worse on my system. Gray loading textures in the map, in the profile pictures, objects render extremely slowly, can't fly along a road except at unaided speed, none of the world gives the illusion of permanance.

My system used to do fine.

Same Problem since the Dec patch also
03-07-2006 22:23
2.5 p4, 1 gig mem, Nividia 6800 GT. I own more then 1/2 the SIM, usually not more then 2 to 6 of us in the SIM. No businesses, No Casino's, No clubs. I never had a lag issue until the Dec patch. Now I start out fine, then cranks down. My partner who has a faster pc, but worse graphics card lagged a lot before the Dec. patch. After patch, she rarely lags. The only difference in our machines I can think would make a difference is that she has 1.5 gig of memory as opposed to my 1 gig.

as i said in another post.. the past 3-4 days have been terrible. Was working pretty good before that. Now sometimes i go somewhere and can't see any buildings for like 2 minutes.. then finally some grayness. Avatars take like 10 minute to load fully. Profiles pics take forever to see.. sometimes never getting beyond a low quality pic.

what is up????

Something buggy, that's for sure. I am finding that I get textures partially loading, whether on objects or on my avatar. The textures are coloured, not grey, but the fuzziness stays and stays and stays. What's worse, textures go into and out of focus...so a texture which has loaded one minute will go fuzzy and insubstantial the next minute. Like Selador's point where clearing the cache leads to instant loading, I can't think it should work this way...because once a texture is loaded it should stay loaded, shouldn't it, if you stay within 2 metres of the object and don't move about?

I have said it before and been laughed at for saying it...there is ALWAYS weirdness when the preview grid is up. I am wondering how much of the weirdness would go away if they took it down again.

Same here, some issues with greyness, but the bigger issue for me is partially loading textures, it's making work on clothing and skins nigh on impossible as I'm editing and uploading new versions every few minutes to test them and they frequently never rez fully despite sizing them down to 512 or 256 from the original 1024 template size.

In the "SL Answers" forum they seemed to say there was an asset server meltdown, but they've been working on fixing it and things should be better now:

It's a vision thing.

This is good news to me! I have just joined Second Life after a recommendation by a friend, and when I first entered the "proper" world it was unplayably bad. I thought it might be a problem with my PC, or even worse that this might just be "how things are" in SL and that everyone else just tolerates the lag.

Not quite.

We don't tolerate it. We report it as the bug that it is.

Personally, it's kept me off the main grid since the release of version 1.6, which is quite some time ago. Granted I'm running a low-end system by current standards, but even high-end gaming boxes can't overcome this level of systemic lag.

Version 1.x.x is dead meat on a stick. Los Lindens believed it was adequately designed to scale up indefinitely. They were wrong. All my hopes (and fears) now live in version 2.

Oh, and when I first entered the "proper" world, textures rezzed instantly and there was no lag at all except at large events. Granted that was Beta, and the SL world was a bit less pretty, and there were fewer bells and whistles and frills. Odd thing is, that it was extremely enjoyable without shine, or bump mapping, or ripple water, or lag. Ain't that weird?????
