Is QuickTime running happily? I think SL snoops at that about the same time it does the h/w detection thing.

I've been seeing some hints that First Look runs with Vista... might try that.

Tried that too I'm afraid.

I deleted that too I think. I'll try reinstalling it.

Here's some Vista voodoo from the jira. Not sure if this is redundant... the "VirtualStore" bit sounds new to me:

This problem is due to a bug in the installer - neither the installer or the uninstaller are aware of the changes to the Vista filesystem related to User Account Control (UAC), specifically the VirtualStore, and do not clear out the user's AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\SecondLifeReleaseCandidate directory. All reinstalls fail because old versions of the file are used instead.

The right thing to do would be to make the installed Vista compatible, the workaround is to manually delete Second Life files from the VirtualStore as well as from the standard Program Files location. Turning off User Account Control during installation might also solve the problem, but I didn't test that.

I saw a "Virtual Store" directory and wondered about what that was.

When I try to find a lost file on my PC I would do a search in Explorer for the entire hard drive for the file using wildcards. i.e. *.log

Delete any SL folders when you uninstall. I had this on the RC and then uninstalled again and deleted the folders it left behind manually. Reinstalled it and it launched.

Nothing has even remotely looked like it might work. Progress so far is zero.

In that case, I'd recommend upgrading to Linux. :p Seriously though, that sucks.

I'm just baffled by what's suddenly changed to make this happen. I've removed all the windows updates that had been installed the last few months. Other than that, nothing about my computer has changed at all.

Maybe it's a sign.

But when the hallowed day finally comes that the SL "Metaverse" finally becomes the norm for human interraction, and all physical connection between human beings is ended, how will I find hookers?

By then you'll be dead, in Hell, so they will be all over the place. Give me a call.

We can rule out an incompatibility issue with Vista's updates. I had numerous updates on 10/10/07. It turns out that I was last online 24/10/07. It seemed longer ago than that. Anyway, that's one suspect crossed off the list. The only major changes to my system I have made was deleting Nero, as it was causing compatibility issues with Movie Maker. I really can't see how this makes a difference, so I am back to square one.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition, and my computer did something weird on a reboot once. It changed my color quality to 16 bit instead of 32 bit. This will cause the SL client to report that the color qaulity is too low to run SL upon inspecting hardware. I don't know how to access this in Vista, as I 'downgraded' back to XP, but I access it in XP by right clicking on the desktop, selecting properties, and going into the settings tab.

Have you tried completely disabling your firewall? Is that possible in Vista? People have reported they had to open up special ports to run SL in isolated incidents. You may have to file a support ticket to find out what those ports are; I don't know what they are off hand.

Have you tried finding the latest drivers for your video card or completely uninstalling and reinstalling them?

Can you run any other 3D applications?

Try downloading Windlight, the Havok Beta viewer, the regular viewer, and the Candidate viewer. If you are feeling daring, try the Nicholaz or the onrez viewers as well.

Wow, look at all of those viewers, it's like 6 chances to try to get back in SL on the other machine of yours that stopped working. Good luck.

Tried all these things already. Nothing has made even a tiny scrap of difference.
