From: Osprey Therian However, if you manually get rid of all the SL things on your computer and do a clean install it might very well work all right. That's what I was figuring people were saying. Windows has a bad habit of thinking that it's smarter than the user and tries to hide files from us. Right click on the Start menu, then Explore. Go to the Tools/Folder Options menu (These are all probably pretty similar in Vista.) In the View tab, select "Show hidden files and folders." Now you should be able to find the Application Data folder under your user name in Explore (the Windows user name, not your avatar name.) Delete the ENTIRE Second Life folder. Reinstall. You'll have to deal with the blue introductory popup windows for a day or two ("This is your inventory, blah blah blah" but it should leave you with a clean system, SL-wise.

From: Chas Connolly Real classy. I just read your previous post. And despite his "humor" which I didn't find particularly funny in this instance, I still offered help and continued to do so, despite the "humor" that continues to flow from him. He was an ingrate.

From: Chas Connolly This and Cristalle's reply really are piss-poor responses to someone who can be very helpful when asked genuine questions. And genuinely entertaining. If you don't like - or more likely don't understand - Conan's humour, fine, just don't respond like one of the consistently negative posters on this forum. I'm surprised by both of you.
Sorry, Conan, I'm not much help, as i'm still using XP. But in Vista I think you go via C: drive/ user/RL name/application data/roaming/second life, you might find the files your looking for.
EDIT: Oh, and I'd like to add that I totally agree with Conan on the excessive use of the forum for advertising. Thanks Chas. Unfortunately there are some people who think that having a bit of fun on the stupid threads (while we're waiting for a sensible one) is the same as flaming/trolling the serious ones and can't distinguish between the two. I've followed Osprey's sound advice, as well as uninstalling all updates to Windows since the beginning of October (the last time I used SL successfully). I'm now getting the Second Life Crash Logger when I try to log in - which I suppose is progress of a kind.

I confess, it was I who started the great logfile hunt, just in the desperate hope that it (the Debug_info) might give us a clue what was wrong. But that was back before we knew it was Vista, which I know less than nothing about, except a vague and likely faulty recollection that some kind of "compatibility mode" switch has to be flipped on the executable or some such malarkey, or maybe that's all ancient history now. (Sorry: I'm a Linux guy; on Bill'sOS I just push the pretty buttons and hope for the best.)

Conan, did you delete the entire SL directory, or just the log? Entire directory. I've tried changing compatibility I'm afraid and that still doesn't work. The log file yielded nothing of use either.

In an earlier thread, Rebecca suggested running SL as Administrator. Here's what someone else said as well: From: someone Almost looks like a Vista/graphics driver overlay problem. On a newer system with Vista, going back to an older supported video driver isn't an option. You might try R-clicking on the SL shortcut --> properties --> compatability tab, and enabling the compatability mode for WinXP or maybe Win2000. Is worth a try... Also might help if you're not using the fancy Vista desktop interface and dont have any other programs open.

There must be someone out there who knows how to solve this problem. Any Brits with a sense of humour?

Here's what someone else said as well: All sensible advice. But unfortunately I've tried that too. As a rule I run everything in Administrator mode.

Is it the usual viewer you are reinstalling? Would uninstalling then installing a different viewer be useful to try, or is it something fundamental (reg, security, etc)? I'm asking, not suggesting.

I'm asking, not suggesting. Unfortunately I just don't know. I've installed and reinstalled both the usual viewer and windlight. The latest Nicholaz viewer doesn't fair any better either. I've removed all windows updates and security updates that have been installed since the last time I successfully ran the client. The only progress that I have seen is that am now get the crash logger when I run the client, 5nstead of it merely stopping.

Something from JIRA: From: Lockhart Cordoso I switched over to the installer files that Linden includes with the sources. This means that the program will install as if it were the official version. So I suggest that you uninstall the official version if you plan on using this version. Shortcuts will no longer be VistaSL but just Second Life. If you have any questions, IM me in-game or post here.

Conan, you might want to use Windows' system restore to take your system back to a point when SL was running effectively. If you have that feature running, pick a date about 3 weeks back - you will lose any security updates that you have made, but you will be better able to sort out what the problem is. I do not know if that is really the problem, because my new laptop has Vista and has all the security upgrades, and SL runs just fine.
I noticed on Vista that for some programs, it hangs when asking for permission to change something in the system the first time that you run a new program. If you are blocking SL inadvertently, it may just be crashing at startup and that you really need to unblock something in Windows for SL to run.

I'd try contacting Lockhart Cordoso directly] Here's the thread which the JIRA entry referenced: /111/98/163395/1.htmlIt started in January and ended in July so who knows how accurate it all is? http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/

All right - I don't know Vista at all, so all I can recommend doing really is to remove every trace of SL from your computer, manually, including things like shortcuts. Then turn off the computer, go and make a cup of tea and eat a biscuit. Read the newspaper.
Then come back, turn the computer on and install SL afresh from the download page, make sure the AV is happy letting it through, and fire it up.
Or if that just sounds like what you have already done have the cup of tea part and think - usually a solution will show up once one is a bit detached from the problem.
