Client won't launch

I've posted this on the technical forum, but since few people seem to go there I thought I'd open it up here. I asked this question here last week actually, but nobody answered and now the thread has vanished.

About three weeks ago I was cleaning up my harddrive and I uninstalled SL. A week ago I decided to reinstall it. So I downloaded both the latest regular client and windlight. When I try to launch either of them, the "Detecting Hardware" dialogue box comes up, but then a few seconds later the client simply stops working and disappears from the Processes tab in Task Manager. It simply stops.

I should stress at this point that I have been running SL flawlessly on this very computer for many months before this randomly started happening.

I know of atleast one other person having this problem who has submitted a ticket nearly two weeks ago and had no response. Any one else having this problem? Anyone know of a solution?

If you uninstalled just using the little uninstaller executable, that might not be good enough. I'd try following the instructions in the KB:
From: someone
How do I fully uninstall and reinstall Second Life?

It's important to clear out temporary Second Life files (such as the cache) when reinstalling. Here's the process:

1. Open c:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\Local Settings and delete the contents of your Temp folder.
2. Open c:\Documents and Settings\(yourusername)\Application Data\Second Life and delete the contents of the Cache folder.
3. Uninstall Second Life using the Add/Remove Programs tool in your Windows Control Panel.
4. Visit http://secondlife.com/download and download and install the latest release.

If you cannot see the files or folders:

1. Select Tools > Options in Windows Explorer.
2. Click the View tab.
3. Select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
4. Click OK.
Then, when that doesn't work, I'd add "-log" to the client command line options to enable logging, and see if the resulting logfile gives any clues. (See https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters for more fun stuff you can do to torment the viewer.)

I've just done this now. Where will the log file be created? It's not in the Second Life directory.

I struggle to believe that not one person out of the 33 who have viewed this thread have an answer to this question.

Try Application Data folder under documents and settings.

And maybe it's the shitty attitude about people's shitty land and shitty products why you're not getting a better response.

If people can't take a joke, that isn't my problem. Fortunately your unhelpful advice to look in a non-existent directory proves that I'm not missing out on anything special.

I have no "Documents and Settings" directory, unfortunately. I have a "Documents" directory, which does not contain the log file. I should point out, I'm using Vista.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

And people wonder why most of my posts are sarcastic back-biting, when this is all anyone else ever does.

I'm not familiar with Vista, but username info must be somewhere if not in the usual Documents and Settings\(yourusername). Try searching for "user" or "SecondLife"? The folder on my computer contains: Administrator, Default User, All Users, me. The SL folder inside my username folder's (hidden) application data folder is called "SecondLife."

I've found the AppsData folder now. Looking for the log file as we speak.

What would the log file be called? "Log" seemed fairly logical, but there is no file of that name.

Folder in Application Data/SecondLife named "Logs."

Did you see this thread? It seems to have useful info:
/111/0b/226208/1.html

It seems like deleting or renaming that "SecondLife" folder then uninstalling/reinstalling Second Life should work.

Is the firewall needing tweaking? I used to have to beat on mine after every update.

Unfortunately nothing in that particular thread is relevent to my problem; it all centres around crashes in-game and video card incompatibility.

I have two files in the "Logs" sub-directory; "SecondLife" and "Debug_info". Which would be the relevent one?

Oh, and my firewall is always turned off - I never use my laptop for internet banking, or anything else where personal information is involved, so see no need for one.

I'm pretty sure that the debug log will only contain stuff from within SL if you start running the debug logger from the client menu. I'm confused about what we're doing here; are we reading your log or deleting it?

I wasn't the poster who recommended that so I don't know, but when I look at the "SecondLife" txt file it shows data from the last time I logged in. Don't ask me what one would do with that, though, as unless something obvious is there I wouldn't understand it.
However, if you manually get rid of all the SL things on your computer and do a clean install it might very well work all right.

This and Cristalle's reply really are piss-poor responses to someone who can be very helpful when asked genuine questions. And genuinely entertaining. If you don't like - or more likely don't understand - Conan's humour, fine, just don't respond like one of the consistently negative posters on this forum. I'm surprised by both of you.

Sorry, Conan, I'm not much help, as i'm still using XP. But in Vista I think you go via C: drive/ user/RL name/application data/roaming/second life, you might find the files your looking for.

EDIT: Oh, and I'd like to add that I totally agree with Conan on the excessive use of the forum for advertising.

You didn't specify that you had Vista in your first post, so piss off. If you had XP, that would be where the folder would be. Not my fault you don't know your own file folder structure.

You might want to get a registry cleaner and clean out the keys for Second Life.
