Wouldn't be simple though unfortunatly. The minimum it would need is a PC with Vista on, tester time, QA time, Developer time and then, feasably, a new release just for Vista. Given I doubt even 0.01% of the population are using it and it's a beta OS I honestly think your better off dual booting your machine into XP rather than holding on for an unlikely occurance.

Ay up all,

What do you like about vista?

I'd like to know, because, XP runs pretty fine for me (considering), and I'm loathe to upgrade to anything that helps the push for DRM. Is it all just GUI bells and whistles or are there some real benefits? If it's just plain prettier then it can stay where it is for me.

I like Windows Vista the over all look and stability. I have been using vista with all my applications and the only one that didn't work is second life. And it has been running great. I see no problems with it maybe a few simple little gilitches. I guess it is something that you will just have to look at. I really do like it and I do see a better performance level. I also like a lot of the new features that his has to offer. It's something that you just have to try for yourself if you dont like it you dont. If you do you do! And I like it :P

Well, thanks for your reply Gabe.

I think I'll stick with XP for the mo. Too much stress to install something then roll it back because SL doesn't work lol. But thanks for the info.

Cheers,
Dave

We do not provide technical support for versions of Windows that are not officially released (i.e. at retail).

Other residents may have suggestions, but as for myself, I can't tell you how to make it work (or even if you can).

We should start a "Known compatible hardware" vista thread. Maybe I will. nVidia system runs SL just great in Vista

I have a computer with an Ati 9800 Pro in it. I tried to extract a Windows Xp driver from a catalyst install file for Windows Xp and was able to “force-install” it on the computer but that did not help. Second Life did launch but immediately crashed, just to let you know.

Oh it figures, my PC has a nVidia card (GeForce4 Ti 4200 128mb) this card is not supported by Vista therefore I couldn't get any drivers for it from their site. My laptop has a Radeon Mobility 9600 video card in it...which IS supported by Vista and SL did work fine on it when I had XP installed BUT with Vista Beta 2 SL gives me an error saying I don't have the latest drivers(even though I do)! So I can't run SL at all on my Vista Beta 2 laptop or PC(like most of you) :/ Well I guess I'll just use my laptop for everything but SL and put XP back on my PC to use SL! That is...If I would stop getting the blue screen of death on my PC while trying to install XP back on it!!!! Best of luck to all of you and PLEASE let me know if you find a solution! ::huggerz:: ~DragonChiq

i can only hope that ati puts out a driver that would work with sl , or at least a way to have sl think the current driver is proper :P

I have a L2000 Laptop with ATIRadeonXpres200m Video Adapter from HP--I went to ATIs site and tried their downloads and did not work--then I went to HPs site and downloaded there driver ( Graphics Driver for ATI Radeon Xpress 200M Chipset) and SL is backup and running. So you might want to try the manufactures website if you already havent.

good luck

Vista and SL performance
06-14-2006 10:24
Loads and loads of accolaids of how Vista is good and stable and all the sunshine and rainbow stuff for Vista on PC/Lap ... but none for how SL is performing on it.

For those who actually got SL to run on Vista, how's it working out? Is there any benefit points you can post where SL/Vista versus SL/XP is better or improved?

I read where someone had a better fps, but not sure how that will tie directly to OS over hardware/network.

cheers!

mmm, that doesn't seem right as there are no DirectX 10 cards out and DX10 is not backwards compatible, it was made from the ground up. Also SL is mostly OpenGL based, not DX.

OK - for all those out there (like me) who wish they could play SL on their ATI powered PCs under Vista...

The ATI drivers for Vista Beta 2 have no OpenGL support yet.

This is listed as a known issue with their drivers in the ATI readme file.

Which means that there is no way whatsoever that it will work until ATI release a new driver.

Nothing short of a rewrite from the ground up of the rendering engine could be done to SL itself to change this, and the Lindens are powerless.

We are waiting on ATI, who are, sadly famous for their poor quality slow late support of OpenGL

nVidia

ok so some times i can be a dork and some times i can be just dence.

Anyone who's on nVidia/Vista .... what's your comments on SL/Vista performance?

I have it here and my install finger is twitchin like mad, but my PC is the most tempremental thing on the planet and don't wanna go through the drama it's fixin to give me if there are known "never do's" with nVidia.

I got SL to work on Vista with an ATI Radeon 9800 -- here's how:
06-30-2006 11:01
Someone else said the problem in another thread; I too had issues running SL and figured out what the problem was and how to fix it. Now, I'm not one to claim to be knowledgable in this, but it has something to do with the aeroglass UI and how it handles / monopolizes openGL. That, and supposedly the catalyst drivers supplied by ATI for Vista don't have OpenGL support because of it.

You have to install older drivers.

Well, you can't run the older catalyst. It errors out. But as long as you let the installer extract the drivers somewhere, you can still make it work. Just hit up Device Manager, and go to the properties of your display. Go to the driver tab, and then click Update Driver. Use "Browse my computer for driver software" and then direct it to where you extracted the old XP drivers. It should install them without complaint. It did for me. From that point I was able to run SL just fine.

A caveat is that sometimes Vista has trouble shutting down because of a "bad driver." If you're willing to put up with oddities like that for SL and/or other games that were K.O.ed by your new OS, then congrats and have fun. :3

Sorry if some of that doesn't make sense. Though I'd share my discovery. Apparenty their browsing method for updating drivers doesn't check versions.
