thats gives me a little hope if its not just the 98ers who are having troubles..
it seems a bit silly to alienate a decent percentage of the playerbase (regardless of the recommended specs) over something like font issues...
i suppose all we can do is keep bringing it to the lindens attention.

Are you sure it's cuz of Win98, as last week mine did exactly what your saying yours is doing. I unistalled the game and installed it again from scratch. After that i got a msg tellin me to update my drivers. After looking that up i tried again and it came up with two options help or cancel, when i chose cancel it loaded up normally.

Please, please, please work....
Greatest sympathies to all out there who are having a hard time of it.

im on windows ME and cant get in, cant get the icon to start the program, I tried uninstalling reinstalling restarting and nothing still .. WinME is basically Win98 with pretty icons and a severe case of itreallysucks. Win2000 and XP are not even built off of the Win95/98/ME core. That line died at ME, and good riddance. It should be interesting to see how many more times people have to say 'You must upgrade to 2000 or XP!' before people stop asking the same question, in the same thread, and getting the same answer. Alternatively, as one person suggested, there's always Linux. Mmm.

I loaded the new version and i get to where it says contacting user server, then it goes right back to the log in screen. Doesn't seem like the program isn't responding. This doesn't make sense. My other computer works just fine, I'm curious about firewall setting?

If you are running Windows 98, Windows 98SE, or Windows ME, you will NOT be able to run Second Life 1.6.
As listed in our FAQ, and on the download page where you downloaded Second Life, SL requires Windows 2000 and XP.
2000/XP feature a ton of core operating system enhancements that Second Life needs to run properly. We've looked into 98/ME support, but those OS's are an immense workload to get any form of compatibility with, and most machines still running 98 don't meet Second Life's system requirements anyway.
It comes down to the amount of work it'd take to provide that support, versus what we could do in the same time, i.e. provide better support for XP users with Intel graphics (which includes many newly-purchaseable retail PCs).

From: Catherine Omega Are you running Windows 95, 98, or ME? If so, upgrade. SL only runs on Windows 2000, XP and Mac OS X 10.3. Wanted to let you know.... I upgraded last night from windows 98, to xp that included the service pack 2... also... updated some drivers for video card, and believe.. some chip thing (hahaha tell Im not a pc wiz) on the motherboard. Woot...... it worked!!! I was very frustrated and anguished to know..my SL icon was dead.... however would like to say to Cathrine Omega....... thank you so much..for all your input during the major storm with frustrated residents during a high peek time.....and the patients you gave to all..... hugs hon..... 1.6, win98, and winXP
04-02-2005 11:32
Well, I bit the bullet, and bought WinXP. I knew I was running SL on borrowed time anyhow. I had, before installing, gone to microsoft and run the upgrade report tool. Uninstalled some hardware, undated some drivers, and ran scandisk to check for errors. Then made sure I had backups of what I might loose. Installed....... no glitches. There was a few things that wouldn't let me update until I had the XP OS on my comp, so I installed as is making note of the warnings as they appeared. reinstalled my hardware & Voila! did it work?...... YES! resoundingly ..... was "in-game" last night for 2+ hrs no freezes, no glitches, heck it didn't even freeze up for as a second..... it usually did on win98 and my lag wasn't nearly as severe. Anyhow..... at least one happy customer

WHY DARN IT??!?!?!?! are you like getting profits from xp sales or something?!

Just to chip in here, game crashes for me, on startup, as soon as it tries to detect graphics, and the screen goes black and back to desktop, it crashes..
I am using windows server, the funny thing is, it started up ok before i updated the server to SP1, so i asume SL has a problem with SP1.
Currently i have uninstalled SL, since i cannot do a thing with it.

Try disabling graphics detection by adding "-noprobe" to the command line. If that allows you to run SL, file a bug report with the details of your video hardware and OS.

Tried and didont work, i guess becuase SL has to detect the graphics card when you first run it, it cant save its config out ether, since the crash happens before its able too, otherwize would try to edit it.

They can't make games to run on a 7 year old OS just because some people refuse to upgrade.
