Please read posts before complaining. There are already lots on this including....

/3/99/40679/1.html

Dont assume automatically that its broken and that its LL's fault.

Are you running Windows 95, 98, or ME? If so, upgrade. SL only runs on Windows 2000, XP and Mac OS X 10.3.

You know..I've already posted in hotline... dead icon... having same issue..won't even begin loading game.......... and IF... this is because....I'm not running windows xp... I sure wish there would of been an inworld announcement well in advance that it would be "mandatory" to play in my investment with this update. I would of been prepared and paid out the 100$ plus..to upgrade. Which, have to say..was avoiding to do so.. working towards buying a new pc.... rather then upgrading this old one.

A very sad Z ;*(

SL's never been supported under Win9x, it's just managed to work for most people in the past. It's unlikely to work now, because (I believe) of the upgrades to the font system. Who knows, it might be possible to get it to work, but honestly, I'd look at upgrading Windows.

You can't. SL will only run on Windows 2000, XP, or Mac OS X 10.3. You need to upgrade if you want to use SL.

And if you're feeling lucky, you can try Linux and WineX. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I think it's the fonts. Win98 doesn't support anything but the Latin character set, and SecondLife 1.6 does.

Interesting. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2, and after upgrading to v1.6, I'm experiencing logon failures. At one point, my client froze (same as it did before they implemented the login queue), and I had to force-quit it. When I went to relaunch SL from my Start Menu, Windows complained that it couldn't find "newview.exe" - this particular shortcut had launched SL just fine before it froze...

That's strange... and I wonder if that has something to do with the problems being reported above.

i move my cursor over the icon that says'secondlife' i double click to start it, my cursor turns into a loading hourglass thing for about 3 seconds, then it goes back to the normal arrow, then nothing happens, nothing loads.

That's right, newview.exe no longer exists. The SL executable is now named SecondLife.exe. You'll need to change your old shortcut.

If SL doesn't even run, you're probably running Windows 9x. If you're having trouble logging on, you're in the same boat as the rest of us. It'll continue to be slow for the rest of the evening.

I find this amusing. Unfortunately, Win98 itself isn't supported (or being sold) anymore, so there's really no reason for companies like Linden Labs to continue to support it.

SL 1.6 adds support for other languages and character sets, but it does so at the loss of compatibility with older versions of Windows. And since they've always required 2000/XP anyway, they're comfortable with that. There isn't a way to get it to work on Windows 9x.

I'm having the same problem, it won't let me log on. I'm running Windows 2k Pro, as well. I can get as far as having it load half-way before it gives me an error message, claiming that SL didn't know what happened.

No, just keep trying. You'll get in, the login server is just a little overwhelmed at the moment.

ive never had a problem running SL on win 98 untill today.
todays the first day the games failed to run at all, and i cant even get the game to get to the hardware detect before it dies.
ive been asking about it all day, and haent gotten any response other then from other people with the same problem..
i realize theyve got theyre hands full, but i was hoping theyd look into these sorts of problems sooner then later.

im a fairlypaitent man though, i can wait a few days before i get really upset. ;p

Yes, the changes to SL's font system in 1.6 mean that SL won't work on Windows 98. You'll need to upgrade if you want to use it again.

Well, if I can play devil's advocate for a moment, they did -- when we signed up. The Lindens have always maintained that 2000/XP is necessary to run SL; it's just that now the technical limitations are catching up on them.

I'd ask them about the fees. It's possible you could get a refund.
