Maybe someone should start a petition and rally up some media attention. Management need a wakeup call. Or at the very least it might spark a competitor to Second Life which is fundamentally better engineered. Only got so much patience left.[/QUOTE]
I totally agree Anthony, I planned to devise one earlier...but that attitude of 'someone should' as opposed to 'we should' made me realise just how futile an exercise it would most likely be.

Innovator or Trailblazer?
07-30-2007 09:38
Is Linden Labs going to go down as the company that created and sustains a new online venue? Or will they just be known as the failure that showed some other company the wrong way to do it?
Personally I am at my wits end. Tier coms due over the next week or so and once again due to nothing working, I will be left holding the bag. No one can find my business because search is down, my Classified that I paid around 18k Linden for is useless. All conveniently ignored as "the risk you take" per the TOS.
How about a simple common sense approach like providing the services agreed to for the payment recieved. I see no reason to continue to support a system where I have to pay for a service that is not delivered. Even my cable TV company, as crappy as it is, compensates us for outages.
I just hope that by the time i give up and decide to sell off the regions I own that they are still worth something.
Of course I know this post will be one of the hundreds of rants here, and mostly if not entirely ignored by anyone who can do anything about it, but i did it not for any reason other than to vent and get my anguish out.

More Crap
07-30-2007 13:20
Well I logged in again. Search working, freinds list back and even managed to tp to a shop, buy something and whooooopppeee it worked OH crap, tried again 5 mins later no TP, No search. Its all starting yet again. I am niow completely convinced that the Linden s who call thermselves coders or programmers are definately NOT. Time to call in some professionals who know what they are doing with such simple coding, and have an attitude that works with their customers. i.e. Letting them know whats happening and responding with proper answers and no BS Totally fed up yet again, but what new. It never changes. same crap every 5 mins that your logged into this complete and utter mess DEAR LINDENS, I sincerely hope you are reading these Forums, maybe you will then see just how unhappy your making paying residents. (By the way that means People who pay your salary) Get it Fixed and update the Blog immediately not leave it for 132 hours and then let people know whats happening and TRUTHFULLY. By the way its over 4 hours since you put up a blog to let us know what your doing ** 4 Hours ** This is not acceptable

simple coding?
07-30-2007 14:01
really? simple? updating antiquated software to deal with conditions it was never designed to deal with seems anything but simple to me.
the real problem here is not the technical issues. those are inevitable and somewhat understandable in any large system that requires 24 hour access and use. All work on this system is on the fly. that can't be easy to do.
the real problem is the lack of communication to customers. Bunker mentality never works.
Simple coding? no. Simple PR? absolutely.

That's all very nice. But a blog post saying "yep, still screwed, but we're working on it" doesnt help either. We know it's screwed. All they can do is reconfirm it's screwed and they're working on it. One employee posting "we're working on it" while the programmers have the weekend off isnt going to help us. I just want them to fix it! Until they fix it they've got nothing useful to tell us.

Simple coding? You've got to be kidding!?!?
07-30-2007 16:08
The Lack of customer service announcements aside, and I agree this is a 'Bunker Mentality' that is doing a dissevice to LL and is unworthy of us, thier customers, I have to comment that this is NO simple problem...
The entirety of SL's implementation is FAR from simple. SL's server code is one of the most complex software engineering undertakings, and achievements, that I known of.
However, the underlying code has almost certainly become an ever more fragile and unreliable Kludge. I've seen this over and over again when production code gets extended far beyond its originaly anticipated design spec (ask me about Global Crossing's Network Management Code back in 2000, lol). The SL server code base is a C++ implementation. Though very fast, and processor efficient, this is a very tough language, and development environment, to debug being so lowlevel. All memory mangement must be peformed by the coders. You have to write a LOT of code to implement the simplest things in C++. Today, much better programmer efficiency is possible with less exposure to error and memory leaks, using more modern higher level languages and platforms. Back in 2003, when the Linden's launched this, C++ was the only real game in town for something like SL in order to get the kind of performance required out of the available hardware. Interestingly, the OpenSim code which leverages libsecondlife, which is a reverse engineering effort of the SL communications protocols, is written in the .NET framework in C#. Which though slightly slower is MUCH easier to develop, debug and maintain. Unfortunatley, it is a Microsoft sponsored Framework, and therefor runs faster and with less issues in Win32 systems rather than in Linux. Fortunately, the advent of Mono, an open source implmentation of .NET, should resolve this barrier soon. A year ago, Mono was 80% slower then .NET on Win32; today it is 30%. I anticipate that within the year it will gain parity or so close as to not matter.
Because of the above, I am VERY concerned that the level of complexity in this C++ code base, and lack of a larger community to clean it up and debug it, is going to cripple SL. I believe, and am begining to stake more and more of my time (and therefore my business) that the time has finally come for a real movement of mainstream business into using immersive 3D simulation as an integral function of their human communications infrastructure. There will be millions to be made in this. I want to capture my fair share. SL is the current leader, and has the greatest potential, for becoming the standard bearers for this new 'world'. However, if they fail to get a handle on their (ever increasing) reliability and availability challenges, due to the frailty and complexity of their code, then this 'movement' will falter and we will have to wait, who knows how long, for the next 'wave' to rise up.
Therefore, the FASTEST WAY TO FIX THIS, and I URGE Linden Labs to do this, is to IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THE SERVER CODE TO THE OPENSOURCE COMMUNITY--DO IT NOW!
Yes, you will lose a measure of control, but gain any number of huge advantages. Moreover, all your money is not a function of the code base; it is a function of YOUR BRAND and in YOUR MEMBERSHIP. If you release the code, as it is warts and all, you will gain a volunteer army of coders ready to bug fix the platform for you. You still keep the brand, the membership, and then have opportunities for leveraging new revenue models by connecting other Grids to SL, for a montly fee, rather than having to manage the entire Grid yourselves.
So, LL do it now, don't be stupid.
---o--- UPDATE TO POST: Of course, it may not be the C++ code at all. It may just be their Database implementation, design, and scaling issues, now after reading some other posts, this seems more likely (though I still think the codebase is probably fragile)
Regardless, Open sourcing the server code is still the way to go... ---o---

From: Pushy Fitzgerald What really grinds my gears (is that what Peter Griffin's talk show was called?) is the loss in 'business' for some of the great and talented designers I've met in SL. The best ones I've met all have one thing in common, they truly love the appreciation of their customers. Those people get hurt when stuff like this happens, yes. But I have a feeling they get more hurt by the atmosphere created by the bugs that cause inventory loss which has some people stating loss to try to get free items. I literally had the issue just this past weekend where a box of shoes I bought, if I placed them on the ground to open them at he store (this is cutting edge technology? why cant I just open the item in my inventory?) I would get an error that placing the item there was not allowed. If I then went elsewhere to try to place that same object on the ground to open it, I would get a 'failure to rez item' error. Log out then back in, and its gone. No trace. Not at the store and not at my home and not in my inventory. For my 'trouble' he gave me a free pair of shoes while I went back and forth with him testing the problem with over and over. But I felt more bad for him than I did for losing 280L. Then you have people who lose things that are nearly irreplacable. Things like Huds and AOs containing numeros purchased, collected, sifted through and tailored animations. Gone in 60 seconds. What to do then? What vendor can you go to in order to get that back? :\\ it is an extremely taxing thing to be hobbying selling wears/warez in sl, have a day-job, and coming home to a plethora of ims-to-emails of unsatisfied customers!! that is for sure. and week to week, these 'delivery bugs' can have subtle differences. :\ i've already postulated under another thread wondering if this latest gridslag is actually fault of programming or perhaps a type of 'attack'. if programming, in theory at least (in theory trafficjams do not happen either it would be solvable. in a bare-basic ping attack, maybe not so, until the source is located and nullified. but till there's a definitive answer, dunno... 'till then, i get receipts from my vendors, so until the probs settle out, i am doing my utmost to make sure paying customers get what they bought. hopefully all other sl retailers are matching the effort...

Have you guys seen it? but population was much much lower. less then 45,000 or so......... We had lag, but not to this tone of at times totally unplayable. Its when they added money chairs, and dance pads that started this junk.
