I don't care if it starts a new session every time I connect. Just don't make me do the darn login page that can't be handled automatically. Ideally, remember who I am from the cookies, and automatically log me in. That way there's no increased database load, but it's not the user interface nightmare that it has become.

Even my bank remembers who I am between sessions, only asking for a password when I connect, and while that's fine for them, I think it's over-kill for SL.

Why would it be overkill. Considering they have Credit card info for most theire members they need to have somme security in place. What would be the best is to have the first and last name be on box. That way the auto-fill feature would work. Also what is the big deal with having to type in username/password everytime you open the site...it's not like if you have to type a big long paragraphe or anything it's 3 words...and savoing that info in a cookie also poses a security risk if other people have access to the computer you are using...or if sommeone intercepts the cookie...cause they are just plain text they would have your username/password....

[pseudocode]
) User Login
( Anything in the cookie named X?)
{ Get X out of cookie and match it for safety}
else
{
) Roll a GUID named X.
) Put X into database.
) Put X into the cookie. (timeout from settings page)
}

) Whenever you need to do DB transaction, you match the Xes.
) Disconnect.
) Have server take a break.

)

It's way overkill. First, they don't have CC info for the basic accounts, and most of what's done on this site doesn't involve that sort of thing.

Every time I start SL, I risk crashing my system. Sometimes, I'd avoid that, unless some of my friends are online. Doing a check for online friends or browsing the forums shouldn't take more effort on my part than connecting to my bank, but it does, now.

You want to have a security check before doing something involving payments or such, that's fine. But make the harmless stuff easy. You don't think it's an imposition. Great. I do, and your arguing that it's not isn't going to change my mind.

I am still getting a login screen even after 5 minutes when I go from the main site to the forums and then back to the main site again. The sessions or cookies on the main site and forums are not the same or are clearing somewhere (not sure how yawl have it authenticating). :(

So many logins
04-22-2006 22:52
Has been happening for a couple of days, every hard to view info when even a refresh forces you to re-login. The 20 minutes maybe working when staying in forums, but outside forums, seems you need to go thru login page for every access, including refreshing page (like 'friends online'). At least LL could save first and last names. But even then, having to re-login so often has got to be wrong. I am using IE in XP home.

This relogining in thing is definately gettin on my nerves. The worst thing is it asking me to relogining everytime I alternate the sell $L & market data screen to check market information. All my bookmarks I visit everyday on the various sectons on the SL site are all greeted with login-in forms now, compared to ready site/market data at a go.

Talking about user friendliness on the "upgrade", bring back the longer cookie sessions!

The reason they are doing this is to aleviate Databaseserver load to improve performance of site and SL in general Most site have a login timeout for that reason so i fully support this change.

Nonsense. I'm a software architect for a major ISP (like at least 100x the size of SL) and we don't time out anything for DB load issues. We time out web-cookies for our *user's security*. If there's a DB load issue going on there's an architectural bug.

What I want to know is if these changes are related to the intermittent troubles I'm experiencing logging in to SL generally, as outlined in these threads (which have a similiar timeline):

/111/80/101952/1.html
/111/85/102031/1.html

I have a dim awareness of some common systems, but I actually try to stay away from *knowing* anything about SL's architecture because then I get even more testy about it...

hi folks!

As of today, this should be back to working the way it was before the problem started (i.e., early last week).

You will still need to log in again to perform Lindex transactions, but when using other parts of the site (forums, etc.), you should no longer be getting logged out so much.

Letting folks choose their own timeout periods, and remembering first AND last names (since the browser only remembers one) are both good ideas. I have noted them down, and I'll see what we can do.
