I dont think the grid attacks we suffer now, are 'griefers' as griefers known in most games and second life. The attacks are severe, well planned and every time harder to counter. The downtime of the grid extends from week to week.
I think someone (an individual or group) is making a statement, someone who is not pleased with Linden Lab and has a good reason to make this all happen.
So do not worry about unverified accounts, even if LL decides to do something silly about that, the attacks will not end.
You all cry out loud about unverified accounts, how about the database hack? Your names, your rl info, your credit cards, isnt that more frightening then a goo ball crashing your sim?
Linden Lab has an enemy for whatever reason, a skilled enemy. I cant do a thing about that, you cant and it seems Linden Lab cant either.
So stop this useless whining and pointing fingers, whatever they do to unverified accounts, it will NOT stop the grid attacks.

You're right... at least it looks this way to me too.

Crippling scripting and/or kicking out the unverifieds would not solve the problem and would be a great loss of potential creativity in world.

I think the vast majority of us want LL and SL to do well. But whenever you're dealing with a large enough pool of people, for sure you're gonna have a nutjob sooner or later. It might not be any more complex than that... and if it is, well. Having enemies doesn't make the enemies right.

As said repeatly in this thread: Closing those holes in security will not stop an educated griefer with the determination to cause trouble, no matter what is done. But what it will do is kill off almost all of the griefing by casual griefers that consumes the bulk of the resources to deal with on a daily basis. It relieves pressure from both the userbase and Linden Labs. Both of which need that relief desperately.

With the casual griefing out the the way. Linden Labs would be better able to focus energy on prevention of grid attacks and to provide many of the promised improvements in a rather short order.

Closing that security canyon is just better for everyone with a stake in Second Life.

and my point was this: with a GIFT CARD, there is no way to tell who is who, only that it was bought at xyz store. Suffice it to say that your comments make it seem that you did not read my post. I think you should read it again. It very clearly lays out the process of obtaing, activating, and reloading a reloadable debit account that provides a bank card with universal acceptibility equivalent to a credit card and which requires no real client information for activation. It also clearly points out the diffferences from a gift card and from a pre-paid credit card.

With regard to your words about bigotry, you apparently also have missed the point that the bigotry would exist in judging an entire group of residents (unverifieds) by the actions of a few (the griefers). The example you give is totally irrelevant since my comments were directed at the issue of banning unverified accounts.

I've investigated this. I bought some gift cards and looked at what it took to use them online.

Gift cards aren't free. Even if you keep the credit on it, there's an activation charge of six bucks on up... and the ones that cheap usually don't work online, or only allow you to activate multiple cards for the Internet one or two times becore you have to break the law by giving them a false address. And they're REAL picky about addresses, they wouldn't accept a post-office box or my workplace. The truly anonymous ones are about $15 a pop... I haven't tried one of those because that was more than I wanted to spend researching a post on a web forum.

The used or unusable gift cards got turned into pizzas for the kids.

Not tested on animals.

OK, you have some guy who wants to be an asshole on SL.

If he has to go pay a minimum of 6 bucks for a gift card to get an alt to be an asshole with, fifteen if he wants to do it more than a couple of times, how likely is he going to be to do it?

If it's free, how likely is he going to be to do it?

Unverified is NOT BAD AT ALL.
Some people live in Europe and PayPal is screwy for them.
So they don't have payment info on file...?
Doesn't mean they're going to crash the grid down!
There are only 2 or 3 who ruin it for everybody.
Don't discriminate, pin-point the ones who are griefing and advertise their name, make it miserable for them....
Block IP addresses...FOR REAL LL.
