no luck! i am giving up soon.....

ok
1) downloaded version 20.1 of sl...
re-installed correctly the drivers 169.2 and cleaning the registry TWICE

2) I do not have a openGL configuration parameter .

I decided to take the pc to a pc technician , let him clean and re set everything and then re try to reset the card graphic drivers and the sl once

sigh sigh
anyone else has a nice solution for me, cos the nasty people of linden lab told me i am not a premium resident so i cannot have a reply...
sigh sigh

Hi Nemesis, welcome to the forums (despite your dire name :)). Obviously the nVidia 8800 GTS should work fine with SL. You MIGHT be having a driver version problem as the error says, it is not impossible. However, I think it is more likely that you have a different problem. We see a lot of folks complaining about getting this error when their drivers are up to date.

In fact, I wish LL would remove this error message. It can be triggered by two things that have nothing to do with whether your card will work with SL:

1. If you update your driver but do not first uninstall the old one, you may get this message due to a mismatch in some registry item that was not cleaned out by the new install. Uninstalling the driver, cleaning the registry, and re-doing the upgrade will usually fix this.

2. If an OpenGL configuration parameter has been set to a value that SL does not support (bit buffer depth, etc.), you will sometimes get this message. Most likely, this is not the problem --- unless you changed the defaults, OpenGL should work fine.

Uninstall properly, that means you have to find anything related to driver manually as uninstalling does NOT remove everything im not talking about registry, files will still lay on drive after uninstall.

Drivercleaner was a way to do this easy but they went pay to use so im not using that anymore as i know how to fix this anyway.

This is typically SL behaviour if Nvidia drivers dont get a uninstall but a install over older one with newer, SL only program ever picky about it also. (same vice versa)

Also recommend 174.74 not 169.xx

174.74 Drivers
04-30-2008 16:38
I'm running 2 7900 GTs in SLi using this driver and everything goes black under water save for prims and avatars, so the other person that posted about this is not the only one, you can check these drivers off on the main list. Someone said that the 169.28 Beta drivers used for Unreal Tournament 3 work fine. Can anyone else back this up with a confirmation? I'll test later myself.

That was me with the black land underwater. Supposedly the Lindens fixed this with the most recent Release Candidate... but no such luck for me. Land underwater still pitch-black. Still using the 174.74 drivers. Has anyone who has "black water" gotten a fix with the 169.28?

Some other drivers out now, only vista drivers updated i guess;

175.12 vista - 32b
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_175.12.html

175.12 vista - 64b
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_175.12.html

Search for others;
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

^ 174 is for 32bit to, so you can try those if you get out of date with SL, uninstall first, restart pc, then install them & restart again, if you install over old you can get issues with SL.

Solved

169.28 is a great driver! No issues at all on my 7900 GTs (was running them in SLi) and also no issues with my new 8800 GT. If you need a nVidia driver, look no further than this one right here.

I seriously doubt anyone will have issues with this driver, but if any problems occur, please post here.

I think it was the 169.17 driver version that gave all the problems when this sticky was written..........I'm using the 169.25 drivers and have since about mid December. No problems at all for me.

I upgraded my video card to EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express. Cost was pretty substantial as my power supply had to be upgraded as well. Worked great for about 3 weeks, then SL began freezing up so hard it would trash my computer to the point where the computer would report failed harddrive, imminent asteriod collision, containment failure, etc. Just all kinds of dramatic "you are f*cked" messages. Turned out that after a crash just leaving the computer turned off and unplugged for about an hour would do the trick (and holding in power button didn't seem to speed up the discharge inside much.)

Anyway, you can imagine just how much fun that is. So I sadly had to revert to the onboard nvidia 6150 LE . Was not best pleased, but I'm over it now. That was about 2 months ago.

But man, when SL crashes sometimes, it sure has a way of trashing your computer like nothing else can!

Good work LL guys... I have a 8600M 512Mb Nvidia card and i cannot run SL using almost any of the last years drivers, getting the all known msg "Your drivers are not updated or .... ". Just great.

There is a rumor that there must be something left in registry while re-installing drivers. Or Nvidia drivers are buggy. Or ... I wonder why this registry garbage or buggy drivers do not affect ANY other game except SL.

You LL guys must know that no one will downgrade drivers to 1 year older ones in order to use SL and have all other games/software running like having a 5$ graphics card. I could also bet that your graphics detection code did not change since 2004...

I have downloaded all the release candidates software u have published with the hope that in one of them u will fix this problem but i guess u have more serious bugs to fix; not letting residents enter in-world is propably a low status problem.... :(

I am so disappointed (but i guess u don't care)....

The 8600M is a mobile video card as in laptop right? You are aware you need to use the drivers provided by your laptop maker rather than the Nvidia drivers available from the Nvidia website? Laptop graphics are a buggy mess compared to desktop video cards plus one reason only SL has a problem with your setup is the fact SL is not like the other games you normally run into. In all reality SL is a high end application that needs good hardware and I hate to say it but trying to run SL on a laptop, even with good drivers, is going to be a less than stellar experience unless you have a top end gaming laptop and even then you are paying twice the price for the equivalent performance than with a desktop rig. Mobility is expensive.

I was able to run SL with the drivers came with the laptop (1.5 years older) and with one specific version of Forceware from laptop2go site( i dont remember version but was about 1 year old drivers). After that, the SL is refusing to run with any newer driver i installed. And i cannot go back to 1 years drivers because the performance of the card has dramatically increased with these newer drivers.

I write software for stereoscopic vision and with new drivers i have almost 50% increased fps performance with lower heat in the GPU. I cannot drop this and return to old drivers in order to play SL :)

BTW, i think LL must "talk" with Nvidia in order to solve this problem. SL is the only program i know that is not in the list of the programs (in Nvidia's control panel / Manage 3d settings tab); Also it is really crazy to run SL in a desktop with Nvidia 5600 card (yes, my desktop has this oooooold card) and not run in a 8600 one ...

Wow, I been in SL for near 2 years on a 7600, 8800 and now a 9600 and wasn't even aware there was a problem with drivers till the latest one, has run great for me other than glow looking way brighter than other cards see it.

I am using a lenovo T61. It runs about $870 for the base model. But, to bump it up to 2 Gig ram, 160 G 7200 rpm HD would put the price at $1000. If you know someone who works for IBM, they could give you a discount.

Neither my friends nor myself have seen a laptop that works better.

SL works great on this, except if you use palletized textures (Advanced->Rendering->Features->Palletized textures) You must turn this off every time you run SL client 1.21.xxxx.

WoW i cant believe such an important and famous virtual world like Second Life has this kind of problems ... I'd be ashamed if it was my creation ...
Anyway, i'm an 8800gtx owner and i'm running 180.xx drivers. The real problem is that i cant find any (Advanced->Rendering->Features->Palletized textures) setting, cause all i have is (Preference -> Graphics) and then i can click on "custom" and get some more settings ... but still, no "Palletized textures" option.

Now, any idea ? what do i do ?

Thanks for the help.

I am using the 2 nVidia 9800 GTS 512 MB in a SLI Xfire configuration. Running on a Vista 64 bit OS with 8 gb of system memory and a Intel Core Duo Extreme at 3.33 ghz. Needless to say SL isnt the only thing I play on my computer. However, my old machine running a nVidia 7300 SI with 256 mb of mem and 2 gigs of system memory on a 2.6 ghz dual core ran SL the same as the new system.

Now the big difference is on the old machine graphics were fine and on the new machine If I wear a top, my avi turns white from the waist down and if In wear boots that have a black color shoe layer I turn black up to my waist. The Drivers on my 9800 are 7.15.001.7792 and the drivers on my old card were 212. something.

If, all you are experiencing is the clothing issue like me, what you do when you log on is:

click on the adcanced menu option top of screen -
look for the Rendering option -
The look for features -
Uncheck "Palletized Textures"
The Ctrl+ alt+ r to rebake your avi.

Doing that once when you first start your session will fix the clothing texture issues.

Of course any other issues with LL is a moot point. Their hardware detection system says my processor is 1 ghz and to slow to run thier high tech game. While my machine can run Crysis at 112 FPS, but it can't run SL.....C'mon LL use some of the tier money and get into the 21st century.
