red/blue = you've enabled updates accidentally.

GeForce 7300 GT/PCI/SSE2 169.25 worked great in windows xp.
Now with Vista it doesn't. I downgraded to 163.75 and it works good.

A word of advice when downgrading - for me at any rate, the usual Nvidia 169 uninstall (where you uninstall the graphics card in Device Manager in XP) does NOT remove the OpenGL miniport driver.

When I uninstalled and went back to 163, I was greeted with even worse graphics performance than before. After much trial and error, and a handy free utility called Driver Cleaner Pro, I found that the nv4_mini.sys which is the OpenGL miniport driver if memory serves remained even after uninstall.

Installing 163 didn't overwrite this file, as it detected the newer one from 169 as present. So if you are downgrading, beware this, use the aforementioned utility in safe mode after uninstall (follow its directions carefully of course), and you'll be back in business with a decent frame rate and correct graphics.

Additional: Seems this has been considered broken by some since 167 betas: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t52843.html

I am currently using an Nvidia 8800GTX and when trying to use the 169 drivers in XP, it makes a $500 video card run like a $100 one, it basically makes the Windlight client look like a 2005 version of SL on a laptop.

not vid card driver error it is the coder's fault

bad coding ... they always try to shift the blame on nvidia ---

replace the coders and it will solve all laggy stutttery gaming ....

XFX GeForce 8600 GT
04-03-2008 17:23
1.19.1 has brought my gforce g1650 LE to its knees, unless i reduce video to seeing like only 2 feet in front of me.

Am thinking of this card, XFX GeForce 8600 GT , any opinions?

I'm limited as to what card I put in as power supply in box only 300 watts, and yes i know they are cheap, easy to install, etc but for a zillion reasons I have ruled out monkey with the power supply on this current computer.

oh, here is link to card if that helps in forming an opinion.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3445092&Sku=P450-8670

p.s I read another poster in these forums who said to avoid any certain cards for SL:

"Any vid card that has FX,go,LE, gs, turbo/hypermemory
< avoid avoid >"

I guess it depends on the spec rest of your PC, but after adding a 8800gt to my machine, my 580W PSU died and had to be replaced. It could have just been the end of it's natural life, but it does seem a little unusual that it died just then.

Sounds like it was already on the way out and your card pushed it over the edge.. I'd have thought a 580 was more than sufficient for an 8800 assuming that the rest of your rig wasn't excessive!

"Any vid card that has FX,go,LE, gs, turbo/hypermemory"

^ Cause these are budget/cheap for office use not ment for heavy rendering so rather spend tiny bit more and avoid those, this xfx 8600 card is a GT tho so it works, xfx's are notoriously noisy buggers tho.

But youd want least 350watt and recommended +12 Volt current rating least 22 amp, (dont get why its that high tho, i have 20amp on my 8800gts and its been running for a long time now)

Just cause some psu's have higher watt doesnt mean they are better, if it has 15 amp or lower id avoid it like plague.

----
As for this shader bug, 174.74 seem to work for me still on the RC4 client, but trying to break thing in SL is bit hard when you cant even log in :D

Just wanted to point out that for the few minutes I WAS able to log on today, the 169.28 drivers (AKA, the Unreal Tournament 3 beta driver) seems to work just fine; everything renders nicely on my 7600 GS. This is on a fresh install of WinXP w/SP2, 2GB Ram, 3.0G P4.

I had that happen too the other day..I reinstalled my driver and was able to get back in. I have the 8800GTS 512Mb card. I'm using the 169.21 drivers since these are the ones listed at the Nvidia site for my card.

Since it's been about 4 months since this post was made... Has the problem been resolved or is it still on going?? I'm buying a new computer and trying to decide between a 256MB 8600GT or a 512MB 8800GT

Black Underwater
04-16-2008 22:01
I am using the 174.74 drivers with a 7600 GT and have the best luck with the current release viewer. Very few crashes. However with the release client, I crash constantly if there are multiple avi's on screen. This viewer does not like avi's. I have one problem on both viewers where rezzed land under water turns black. Jet black, no colors. If atmospheric shaders are turned off everything goes back to normal underwater, but then I lose the pretty skies. Anyone else have/solved this?

Nope, single 48" LCD running at 1920 x 1024, standard 1080P native resolution at 60hz, D-Sub connection. Still doing it with the newest release candidate...

Hi Nemesis, welcome to the forums (despite your dire name :)). Obviously the nVidia 8800 GTS should work fine with SL. You MIGHT be having a driver version problem as the error says, it is not impossible. However, I think it is more likely that you have a different problem. We see a lot of folks complaining about getting this error when their drivers are up to date.

In fact, I wish LL would remove this error message. It can be triggered by two things that have nothing to do with whether your card will work with SL:

1. If you update your driver but do not first uninstall the old one, you may get this message due to a mismatch in some registry item that was not cleaned out by the new install. Uninstalling the driver, cleaning the registry, and re-doing the upgrade will usually fix this.

2. If an OpenGL configuration parameter has been set to a value that SL does not support (bit buffer depth, etc.), you will sometimes get this message. Most likely, this is not the problem --- unless you changed the defaults, OpenGL should work fine.

Ok, I have tried the latest release candidate (1.20.2) and found that I am getting much better performance from the current release nVidia drivers (no glitching). However, I also notice that I have started to get graphics lockups when ever another avatar is in view :( they only last a second or so, and totaly disapear when I set the graphics settings to their lowest in SL.
Very strange, I don't get this using the standard release version of SL.
Another noticable problem is that Anti-aliasing has stopped working in the release candidate graphics hardware box.
Wonder if my graphics driver install is borked...
