I dont' know if this is the right forum to post this in, but here goes: After searching endlessly the past few days, I can say from a male av's point of view that we are a minority in the clothing dept. There are a few out there, and very good ones too, but the selection is very limited. From where I stand, 90% of the clothing vendors are for the female av's. what about us poor males, we would like a little wardrobe variety also.

very true, I got lots of L, but no clothes to spend it on, so I buy toys..lol
I bought most of the avalon stuff, and the pixel doll stuff, but beyond them i don't see any men clothes besides mixed shirts and pants, but I like outfits and found only those two that have them. Also some a Indigo, but very very few compared to the womens.
Us men do buy clothes, but not many to buy.

Wants ?
10-08-2004 12:48
What are male avi's looking for ?
I was just now browsing through online mens fashion sites and decided I have no clue what guys want. I started looking at items I would like to see on male avs, but decided that was not the best way to go about this quest.
What do you want ?

At The Edge I keep seeking out designers of men fashion because it is a huge demand at my club. Many tend to think it easier to design for a female and more profitable because well we like to shop, but I have noticed that men too enjoy shopping and take great pride in their avtar's appearance. My own brother is a designer and I keep pressing him to make more men's cloths but each time he does and is about to put it in the vendor a guy will come along and buy it up and pay enough for it to be exclusive thus making it unavailable to the public. If there are any designers of male clothings please IM me in game. ~ Jenna Fairplay

What do you want ? Jeans !!! Painter pants, cargo pants. Everyday guy wear. Biker gear, doo rags, Leather pin vests, denim jackets, fingerless gloves with designs. Boots, no don't do those I'm planning that. Stop to sell boots in a box! Creative tees, the oldstyle rock concert tees, button down flannels, denims. Ball caps, cowboy hats.

Eternity Isle Mens Mall is a new mall that is all men related merchandise. I figure it will have some selection coming soon to contribute to male fashion.
I have personally found that men rarely buy clothing, thus no one makes it, so it's sort of like a downward spiraling cycle. It's not a very profitable industry. What little men that have come to me for clothing or skins or etc. have been directed from _female_ avatars. If the effort to look for clothing is not put out there, then no one will make an effort to try and attract them.
Try and do some more searches for mens clothing, there are a handful of good designers out there.. There are also several malls solely dedicated to men. And don't pass up booths or designers because the majority of their store is female oriented, there are a lot of designers with a healthy amount of menswear but it's often easy to overlook when beside or presented with women's clothing.

I look!
10-08-2004 18:07
I have been shopping pretty heavily lately for decent clothes. Women got it large in this game, and it shows! How about a decent pair of boots that does not look like something out of Star Wars, or at the other end of the spectrum, a textured sock? I have tried my hand at prim boots, and am about convinced that trying to recreate my 15" engineer boots by Harley Davidson is not hte way to learn to make stuff! ** frustration ** I agree wit hthe pants too. I have 2 pair that I wear now, one jeans and a very well-done pair of black leather pants. Not all I have, not all I can afford, but all I can find that look reasonable! Painter's pants would be cool, or cargoes that look like cargoes...also shorts (besides shortened jeans) and men's sandals ala Birkenstock style. I still haven't found a black leather jacket I like...nor a hat for that matter...dew rags would be quite cool Men tend far more towards clothes-horse on here than in r/l I think, and I think the reason it is a failing market is sameness. Someone with a mean eye for texture and detail could make quite a living I think! --Os

Hmmr, I've gotten around to make some men's clothes, but so far they're traditional Japanese clothing (historical costumes and more 'regular' ones such as hakama). Not sure if lots of men would be interested though. But in the very thin chance that someone is, well, they at least have the merit to exist.

I've noticed this lack of selection for men as well, and have tried (rather frustratingly, I might add) to learn photoshop. I'm still trying. But, for a period of time, mine will be rudimentary at best. Actually, I think that a woman designing something she'd like to see on a man is a brilliant idea. I mean, women are why we get dressed up to begin with.

WebSpinning Design
10-09-2004 12:12
I've been trying to fill the gap with the selection of casual men's clothing that I offer through WebSpinning Design. I've received positive feedback from customers about my existing lines, but would be very interested in feedback regarding future offerings that relate to the current styles.
An excerpt from my brochure, to give you an idea of what WD is all about:
"The Trek Collection provides the well-dressed male avatar with a number of ready to wear options. Iditarod Trek short-sleeved pullover shirts and Spectrum Trek button down shirts in either long or short sleeves can be combined with your choice of Maniac Trek pants or shorts to create the look you need. Tops and bottoms come in a variety of coordinating hues to suit your taste. All items are quality crafted with matched seams and realistic textures.
"For discriminating individuals who would like something not currently available in the vendors, custom colors may be ordered for an additional L$50 charge per item.
"WebSpinning Design debuted its Maniac Trek line of shorts in There.com during the spring of 2003. One year later, they were introduced here in Second Life, where they were the first in an ever-increasing variety of WebSpinning Design creations to be shared with the Second Life community."
Feel free to check out my profile picks for current vendor locations.

From: someone I have personally found that men rarely buy clothing, thus no one makes it, so it's sort of like a downward spiraling cycle I think this is kind of like HD TV. There is no programming because people don't have HD TVs and people don't but HD TVs because there is no programming. But believe me, there are quite a few men looking for an buying quality clothes, not just t-shirts. My favorite shop so far: The Complete Man Grignano (172,246) Unfortunately, Thai Greenacre seems to be semi-retired. -tito

This comes up from time to time... Alot of mens clothes is not the easiest to convert into SL due to the way clothes fit avatars.. Females alot tend to have the better deal.. Much like hair and skin and makeup.
I can count the number of mens clothiers with more than 20 items on 2 Hands
Fairytale island has a few vendors.. including myself that have mens items.
I have one of the larger selections of mens clothing in SL with a mixture of items including some regular shoes.
Another reason for more womens clothes other than women shop.... They make up 80% of the clothiers in SL.

Thank you all for the info. While I was aware of The Complete Man and the Trek Collection(I have bought some from both), I wasn't aware of some of the others.(They simply didn't show up in the search). I will be sure to pay all of you a visit.

We definately need more male clothing options. As mentioned, some feel that there isn't much of a market, or are unsure of what the market wants.
I think there is a big market for men's clothing, but one needs to figure out what men want from clothing: is it the Gap look? is it the aging rocker look? is it the techno/cyber/goth look?
Those are things that need to be figured out and then the tailors will emerge.

I agree with Juro, I have over 100 mens clothing Items in world ranging from Polos-n-Dockers to Beach shorts and Camo pants but either people havent found my stuff or that its just not some of the styles they are looking for. In Beta I did a lot of Leather stuff and a lot of my stuff due to permissions is now floating around SL for free. Recently with all that i have learned over the last two years I have been slowly updating all my product Lines.
So for Mens clothes what do men want?
Thats all I need to know.

better leather jackets, shoes (besides the military style currently in world), turtlenecks (ok ok, I'm probably the only one who'll buy these), Nice slacks, a regular suit (seen zoot and tuxes), swimsuits (other than speedos *we're not all the riviera type *) Pretty much anything. Just want selection

Have have made 5 colors of do-rags that look pretty cool for women. I'm a complete newbie and have no idea how to set up a vendor, but when I do, I'll post it. Until then, you can see my work if you IM me. I'll even model.
Yes, I can make some for men, I'm just having trouble working out the hair. If you have a male avatar and want to help, I'll give you one for free in exchange for the hair.

As a clothes whore I agree us guys dont have enough choice. Generally I like to wear clothes in SL that I wouldnt wear in real life eg leathers, goth, rags - scruffy - brief etc etc.
Just yesterday I was talking to a womens designer and asked her to start making more mens clothes. Her comment was umm what do men like to wear????
Perhaps some of the female designers should start looking around as I am sure their are plenty of Lindens to be made here!!!!!
Lets get Michael to open his wallet!!!!
In another game I used to play...some of the female designers held some online meetings with guys to ask what they wanted to wear.
