Close to Leaving SL For Good

I'm signing in less and less... and I'm probably very close to closing my account for good, even though I'm aware I can't ever rejoin since I've already used up my two avatar limit.

Two things have bothered me from the start with SL, and they are still the reason at this late stage that I'm unable to maintain my interest.

The idiotic economy, which is all about the supply side of things - the all-pervading "if you don't "create" content go to hell" mentality. What happened to take pride in one's work, even if it was "just" manual labour? SL is just full of things nobody wants or needs, and in the end you cannot keep anyone interested in things that don't do anything for your game character. SL doesn't even have a basic needs and moods mechanic - the very basis of what defines an economy - now, how silly is that for a game which promises an immersive and complex reality? A glorified chatroom, that's all it is.

The interface (don't even get me started...). I had wished there was someway you could act naturally and spontaneously in your relation with other people, but sadly this is impossible. You can't even hug someone or holding hands, much less cuddle up and caress without paddling furiously through your inventory, or clicking and cycling through the right position on a sofa, in order to find the correct animation or gesture etc. When you're done you're that close to evading a heartattack out of sheer frustration and adrenaline shock. Much of the lure of SL is to promise erotic experiences (count the fetish and adult businesses). Can't be done. You need to be relaxed in order to get turned on. So much for this great mirage...
Let no shadow fall on the content creators for this one. I know they started out with even less and only by computer skills, sweat and toil finally came up with the *tadaaah* (trumpet sound) animation ball. What bothers me is that Linden didn't provide the game with some basic mechanics or useful structure from launch that players could work within and improve upon.
Like, if I want to shake hands with somebody, I want to do it by clicking on their avatar. Not by mulling through my entire wardrobe.

That's all I had to say. Now, go on and trash this post for its utter irrelevance in relation to bandwith wasted.

It does the best it can given the technology, and the fact you have hugging attachments which try to make it so you can hug people is a great show of how people will find a way around any limitations.

Remember, people make 99.9% of SecondLife. If you feel it's boring, then either it's not what you're into or they're the fools for not holding your interest. Probably the latter given the stagnation of land with bush stuff and casinos everywhere. The problems is, truely beautiful landscapes in SL come from residents working together, but that almost never happens. Except in few mainland sims, or dreamland where further rules are enforced.

As for economy, yep, I agree it's getting worse, taxing for most functions and signs that incentives are being phased out. Maybe LL wants to see if SL can hold itself up, but economy is a tough thing to balance even in an online game that doesn't allow you to exchange it's currency for real world dollars. I have to admit, one of my reaons for staying on SL is to slowly gain money and save up for when the economy evens out again and maybe even go back to normal. Let's hope more people start buying in instead of cashing out.

The ecomony is a sick joke of residents selling "dreams" that are so hollow they can not see it.

Big deal you get the so called "oceanfront" property. I can by myself have a better dream of this in my bathtub. The expensive cars, planes and all the other is just nonsense. It is none of the above just blather. The griefers are also starting to get to me.

I see second life as a way point in my vitural experience. Perhaps Bill Gates can come up with a new flight sim program that will combine the avatar of second life and the aircraft of flight sim. Then I can fly my plane to some where and explore it on foot safe from griefers.

I often feel like "taking my avatar and going home". Due to the content providers Second Life has come to the limit of its technology. It is dated technology. Of course I have spend all of this money for nothing, nothing at all. At the end of the day dont even have anything on my hard disk to show for the expense. Not even my avatar!

Ummm ... spent all the money for nothing? Are you saying you paid and played all that time without actually having fun?
And if you where having fun , was that not worth anything?

The money I have spent in SL is out of proporten to the amount of enjoyment. I also hate having some foxtrot alfa tell me how important they are and how they should reap piles of money for the little amount of work they do! They probally are only basic members building their crud in a sandbox.

The best build I ever saw was done by the biggest pair of stuckups ever meet! They funny thing was that the sim was empty of residents :) Reap what you plant or something like that. Then again what do you expect from a Nova school dropout?

I wonder if there is a program like Second Life that I can host myself? Then I can control the entire process and not suffer at the whim of others :) Also I would really own something for a change.

I know how you feel. I'm dreading dying in 1st life. I'll not be able to take my new monitor to hell with me. I wish Dell had told me this before I went and bought the damn thing.

Monique, have you tried using voice chat with your online friends?

i think it conveys the feelings quite better than typing.

Should try it, for me its made SL loads of fun.

Yeah!, and my heaven might be me screaming in agony and hopping over flames. While a big red guy pokes me with a fork. Oh yah!!!

Perhaps God will send me to heaven to punish me.

Reverse psychology!!! I've got the big guy figured out!!

I am so pissed off that I bought all this stuff of my own volition.

When I bought these things, I thought they were great! But now the novelty has worn off, and it's all someone else's fault.

The government should close down all the department stores to help me manage my happiness.

Starax, I bought several of your avies a while back, but I don't like 'em any more. Any chance I could get a refund, or maybe I could trade them in for a Dell monitor?

You are all sick and going to hell. Dell moniters? If that is not hell am not sure what is!

Well at least I sold most of my lindens tonight. I wonder if a American dollar balance is considered an asset?

I empathize with the dissatisfaction of both dissatisfied posters. I wish I could offer some comforting advice, but I can't think of any.

Admit it, Nolan. You've "outgrown" the avatars. They've have become too tight around the ass. Sorry, but yes, your bum does look big in them. Deal with it! :p
