While I agree that there should be more diversity in the avatars displayed, I fail to see "escorts in slutwear" as others have stated here.

I agree the outfits the women have on are great and I for one would love to know who made them *grins*

Adding a few more avatars such as one of Psyra's avian avi's, a couple in formal wear, some folks in "everyday wear", large sized avi's and different ethnic avatars would certainly better represent Second Life.

That's one of the things I love about SL it's diversity.

*hugs*

What does this image communicate? I can go ahead and list it out but I am sure the rest of you will do just as good a job of telling what I am thinking:

Yeah - tell his arse to get to Lost Therian's shop, and get him a decent male skin or something. Sorry had to make a useless response.

I for one am a HUGE Lost Thereian skin fan!

And now with his new skins.. both for men and women, I find myself in HEAVEN!

As far as the front page image.. it speaks of diversity. You can represent yourself any way you wish..

but at the end of the day we all know that it's how you conduct yourself that really matters. (be good to each other people.)

Did anyone else notice the guy holding the microphone?

How his fingers were curled round it, holding it?

I didn't think we could pose individual fingers yet.....

Am I missing something obvious, or do I smell a little deceitful photoshoppery?

Dunno but I see an expected aesthetic photoshoppery.

Apart from the map thing (which has been irritating me recently - here I am, trying to produce a synchronised web map, grumble grumble) it says to me "we lack decorum here in Second Life, apart from the gentleman or lady in the protective uniform, who is properly covered up".

I believe that we should have a Caledon front page, in sepia, properly attired. Given that this is for advertising purposes and thus trying to present a Forthright Impression, the ladies should be bearing parasols in an independent fashion and the gentlemen perhaps even not wearing hats. If that is not too bold.

This defiantly does not represent the average resident.
I dunno. I kinda like the image - for its purpose.

The front page is a marketing device designed to appeal to a certain demographic. If MacDonalds put average customers in it's advertising, their sales would plummet. This image does a nice job conveying the creativity and diversity of Second Life, and it does it within just a few seconds of seeing the image. Could it be done better? Sure. Could it be more inclusive or more representative? Sure. But its purpose is to draw young adults in, and I think it will do that - even if it does so for reasons we all find a bit sophomoric or superficial.

For what it's worth, I also liked the map. I think it would be fun to have the front page highlight certain builds, events, or activities too. But if you have to pick only one image, I don't think this one is so bad at all.

Wish you would take the time to blend the back where the top part meets the bottom and get rid of that line across the back waist that you didnt bother blending. It looks like skin underwear.

No matter what they put there people will bitch, complain and argue in the forums over whats best. Everyone has different opinions on what should go there, but since everyone don't agree or think alike... its up to Linden Lab to decide what to put.

Wuv it, Get over it, or get used to it! :)

I wonder who those people are, i believe the background they used is "Deimos boardwalk"
Not sure though.

Despite it's apparent cheese and what looks to be an appeal to the "gotta have something exciting!" crowd I think it is a mega improvement over the map.

For most people I know when you visit the front page of a new
"game" like Second Life (lets not argue this here - most people visiting the front page for the first time are probably game converts) they are looking for something to pull them in; something that says "There is cool crap here to do! Join in Now!".

A map doesn't communicate that "This is Fun!" message, it communicates "This is complex, there is lots of crap here and you don't really want to even try to figure it all out - go and download google earth because you can look at your house instead!".

If you could zoom in to the level where you could really see individual buildings, and maybe browse the world in 3D then it would have appeal, but it doesn't and therefore isn't appealing to the newcomer.

They want new subscribers. They NEED paying members, with this being the case I say bling the garbage out of the front page, post videos, slide shows (a slide show is probably the best option) or just about anything else that says "Second Life is fun, take some time to come in and visit", then make the underpinnings complex so that you can dig down to the detail you want. The front page has no need to do anything but draw in new users and link to more useful tools.

The cheesy photo is exactly that: More fun than a map. Hopefully the next iteration will be even more appealing....
