What does this image communicate? I can go ahead and list it out but I am sure the rest of you will do just as good a job of telling what I am thinking:

It says to me "we're having problems with our map". It's still not been updated for ages, you know.

To me it says:
combat, rock and woman.

It's missing furries, dungoen delvers, victorians and other conservatives, goths, unless the blondy is supposed to be one, Gor, BDSM, etc etc ad infinitum.
How are you gonna represent that on one webpage :)

It says to me someone needs to make some big news about SL, because businessweek has been on the front page for like 3 months.

yeah that's what I thought too

Come to think, it also says "We're marketing collaborative modeling and communication software for your businesses, schools and social organzations to use."

I honestly was a little perturbed by the rifle toting robot since that's how most people describe the griefers these days -- well not all robots are griefers of course.

Anyhow.. maybe an animated vignette would be better -- like a slideshow that shows the other types of people in SL -- maybe something built in Flash perhaps with a few different snapshots?

I dont know, the current image is very American Idol. It makes it seem like you either have to sing your way, escort your way, shoot your way, or bully your way up to the top in SL.

Am I reading too much into it?

LOL

Troy

PS. Doesnt the bull look like he is reaching into his pants? LOL

Probably, but I'll say that when I first saw it, I thought "that's horrid".

For me it says - Deep down we're all the same, and despite the fragility of human nature we can all pull together and rise above adversity and get Bub to make us a nice webpage.

Lacks variety.

There are no ordinary or casual avatars. There are no elegant/classy avatars.

All stereotypes appealing to the teen and young adult crowd only. There's too much "sex and violence" in the theme of the montage.

Why not they put a second row of avatars in the back depicting a scientist, a businessman, a woman in a nice gown, an elf, a normal-looking soldier, and someone in sporty attire?

Yes. They should animate it, so it looks like the "Masturbating bear in a diaper" from Conan O'brien.

Then he represents BOTH sex and violence. He happens to be heavily tattooed and wearing leather gear.

Change that avatar to a guy in a suit or a lady in a classy concert dress then I'll say otherwise.

And even if you disagree with the above ... what age bracket is he appealing to?

Had this conversation somewhere else earlier :)

There's more to SL than just customising your avatar... in fact many people don't actually bother much with that aspect, but concentrate other stuff.

There should be a slideshow covering things like:

- Commerce (a store)
- Socialising (a club or gathering)
- Live music (a concert)
- Fun and games (Tringo, Laserquest or similar)
- Building and landscaping (nice view/build)

Whenever there is a "one item" approach, you'll only ever bring in those people interested in that item, and put off others. The Business Week article might bring in a few astute people with commercial skills, the rest of us would use it to wrap potato peelings in. Similar with already made observations, this current picture very much appeals to the "18-25" crowd, and offers very little to draw in someone who has perhaps matured past the "clubbing" stage of life.

Second Life is badly undersold through lack of advertising diversity. I've been saying this for months, and I hope Linden Lab will listen and do something about it.

Whilst there may be "excellent" designers, builders, scripters - those that always seem to be dusted off whenever there's advertising, maybe we should also be showcasing the 99.999999999% of the rest of the playerbase which although perhaps not always able to create as visually impressive results certainly will give more for the average person to relate to in that "hey I could do that".

Some great suggestions here. But I want to see the woman in the business suit and the man in evening wear that flatters his butt.

I think they should have done a female robot form... a better furry than what they used.. I would have had a couple in a victorian outfit the rocker guy can stay, and maybe one of the females could stay mirrowing the rocker guy..
