My (very limited) experience is that SL can be as fun or as boring as you want it to be. But I find that it's the people, who are almost all really friendly and cool, that make it fun.

But in defense of the original poster, I too have noticed that you're not likely to find many unattractive avatars. Every girl is super hot, there aren't many balding men with beer bellies, etc. But I'm not entirely sure that I mind, I see enough of that in rl! :-)

Having said that, one poster said something that I've noticed (only been here from maybe 10 days), you can easily recognize an avie just by looking at their face. That makes it more engaging and real. Very impressive I thought.

Cheers,
Skippy

P.S. I'm all for letting us change our names. Do you think I would have called myself "Skippy Omlet" if I knew the game would be fun? lol

Does anyone else think that Secondlife is starting to lose its originality?

everyone on second life pretty much looks the same.

they all have pretty much the same hair.

the same skin.

the same clothes.

the same shape.

I Mean If thats how you wanna be i have no problem but...where is the originality?

Err... for the amount of crap we get a la "why can't you guys just be normal", I find it amusing to see a post like this.

Trust me, Napoleon. People don't like deviance. I had a guy in the WA in 2004 say to me, "Your av is stupid. Why the hell does everyone have to try to be different and special here. When I go to a bar, there's nobody with katanas on their back to just say 'look at me, I got katanas.' Where the hell are all the normal people in this game."

So, hey, pick your poison. You're damned if you don't, and seemingly, doubly damned if you do.

OK, OK, I'll try harder! 20 foot tall robots and 2 foot tall firebirds just aren't different enough. Give me some ideas!

I have 600 prims worth of facial pierces attached to my face. ... I'm bald with a lock of hair in the front and a ponytail. ... I actually own the texture to my skin and have used it to repalce the client slide skin files. pretty custom stuff. ... Currently I'm wearing the latest fashions from Mischief - But i could at any time switch to Nephilaine limiteds. ... Ugh, sharing the same shape is gross.
And the cool thing is... despite all that detail she's nowhere near the edge. She's still human, organic, bipedal, with four limbs. There's hundreds, maybe thousands, of people with avatars that are other species, other orders of life, four- six- and eight- legged, or with no limbs at all.

I know for a fact that there's over 100 otters in SL, and that's a relatively uncommon species... and I've even had a couple of "OMG, we're both the same kind of giant robot!" moments.

It's good advice, but I don't think it's a good thing that it has to be given: in other words, if SL is really boring for people who don't make things, that's a problem that needs to be addressed.
I prescribe 500 mg of Yadni's Junkyard twice a day until you're screaming for some boredom.

Except some of those people will never be happy. There are no "Boredom Anonymous" groups that I know of, it's not mentioned in the DSM IV or recognized by the APA, so until it is I believe people can choose to not be bored -- it IS their fault because it's their decision not to look hard enough. And I'm not sure what SL could possibly do to fix their problem.
Maybe I ought to set up a makeover business. "Weird Eye for the Bored Guy". They just need to turn off their preconceptions and bring a couple thousand Lindens for shopping money and we'll have 'em at least looking like they're interesting.

SL is only as boring as your imagination is limited.
