Multi-choice poll coming, but please do feel free to discuss the pros and cons of each.
Personally, I think "no dot on map" is too griefer-prone, but not allowing the "show on map" feature would be a big +.
EDIT: Another thing to consider - which map? Is there a difference significantly between not being seen on the world map vs. the mini-map? Would you vote for one and not the other?

One I would add... Mute Avatar Sounds, or something wordier to that affect. If I never have to hear another repetitive medly of Homer Simpson, fart noises, music blurbs and sound effects, I might actually start attending town halls again.

Hiro, I support the continued discussion of all of these items. These are obviously not complete descriptions of features, and many of them need need a great deal of discussion. Still, I voted for them all cuz I want options!

Yeah, it's a given that people need to discuss whatever is implemented, but this is more of just a "good idea / bad idea" threaed - we can work out specifics once we get a better idea of what we need to work out specifics for.

The poll doesn't address the biggest problem... the ability to be in world and yet disconnected from the Instant Messaging/remote item transfer mechanisms.

Corvus, I thought it was clear that your point was a given - of course they'd be options. Most of the time I, and others, are fine with being seen, found, and reached. We're not asking to strip away features that already exist. From: Jonquille Noir One I would add... Mute Avatar Sounds, or something wordier to that affect. If I never have to hear another repetitive medly of Homer Simpson, fart noises, music blurbs and sound effects, I might actually start attending town halls again. At first I agree, but on later thought, I kind of disagree. Some sounds are intrinsic to the operation of their avatar, and that's not something I like to impede - a person's personal expression of themself. It's different when you mute the whole avatar, because you aren't altering that total expression - just choosing not to be an audience to it. I definitely think avatar sounds should be muted if you mute the whole avatar, though.

The question then, much like the attachment culling issue, becomes one of.. who has more right? Does someone's right to annoy me with fart noises supercede my right not to be annoyed by them and not listen? And as the sounds currently go.. would I have to mute everyone at a Town Hall until the noises stopped to find out where they were coming from? Is there somewhere I can tell who it is playing the wav 20 times in a row?

I was totally thinking the same thing I would love to actually be in world without having to mute ALL sounds. I dont hear anything at all just to avoid hearing all that repetetive sound pukage from avatars

Does someone's right to annoy me with fart noises supercede my right not to be annoyed by them and not listen? Agreed, but it's a package deal, in my opinion. You either mute the entire user's AV, or not at all. I don't think we ought to have the ability to edit another person's expression, simply choose whether or not to be an audience to it. From: someone And as the sounds currently go.. would I have to mute everyone at a Town Hall until the noises stopped to find out where they were coming from? Is there somewhere I can tell who it is playing the wav 20 times in a row? You could also just turn your speaker down ... it's not like you're missing much, there, just the click-clacking of typing sounds. And yes, that's another issue - I think the way SL is setup, sounds are generated by the sim at a location, so the backend architecture may need to be tweaked to accomplish a muting of sounds. Personally, I with LL would just eject people doing it.

View Menu > Beacons > Sound sources edit: ha! i just realized how ironic my sig might look right about now. but i do believe in moderation in all things, and that there is a time and a place, and that the proper timing of a well placed sound byte can be hilarious. you kill teh funny when you over-do it. hopefully most of my customers have the same philosophy. maybe i'll add a notecard to my stuff.

Personally, I just wish we had a seperate slider for avatar sounds. Right now, there's really no way to turn the music up, and sound effects down (or off).
There are a lot of times where I want to hear the music, but I'd rather not hear someone's incessantly repeated joke wav sound, or their fart can, or their banana phone. I'd like to be able to turn the volume down on that.
Even better would be a land-parcel option to block sound effects - just like No Scripts or No Build: No Sound effects. This option would be really useful for events where sound effects can cause a significant disruption - like a discussion, or a trivia game.

I am totally for appearing offline and turning off IMs. I am also all for being able to totally ignore people by choice. I am agianst turning off green dots, and hiding objects on the map and anything else that can so easily be abused.

What I don't understand is that people who are screaming, "zOMG maintain the status quo!" can do that by choice with privacy controls; just leave yourself as "Available", never change it, and your Second Life won't be impacted at all (less the ability to stalk me or disrupt me while working / having private time). In real life, there are these things called office hours. We should be able to use them in SL as well. Regards, -Flip

Shouldn't option #2 be "appear off-line to non-friends" that makes more sense to me, as you may want your friends to know you're around, but not every other tom, dick & harry.
Also, I agree there needs to be an option to ignore IM's, although that could also be controlled by being "off-line".
