Just a quick poll to see why most people build houses, boxes, etc way up in the sky and out of sight from the ground. In a thread I was just reading, the OP submits that privacy being a major reason for building high is 100% wrong, this made me wonder exactly how correct this could be. I know my platform in the sky was put there for privacy, so that already invalidates the 100% statement, but still leaves me to wonder why others build so high. --Fox

I do my building on a platform waaaaay up. There are less prims up there so I can move the camera around more accurately and at a higher frame rate. And flying houses are neat. Especially when some uninvited tard comes in and you turn the floor phantom. It's like a cartoon.

... because the ground tends to be covered in shops and ads people prefer not to see at all times.

Privacy is my number one reason for having my residence in the sky.. But it also seems to be a little less laggy up there.. when I've hit a patch of lag hell on the ground I can pop up 400meters and I'm lag free.. not only that you get some nice veiws and a more spaceous feeling even if you're on a postage stamp.. I keep my ground natural, trees and water and the like.. nature = sl needs more of it.

From: Someone Else privacy being a major reason for building high is 100% wrong Huh? Speaking for everyone in order to get 100%? Wow. Within my first hour here, I was subjected to various quite unpleasant things in my little "first land" plot. There were very bizarre noises constantly played by the "look at me I know how to play noises" crowd, cars falling from the sky, etc. It was just a very unpleasant experience dealing with the other noobs on the ground. As soon as I learned that I could put a box 400m in the air without it being instantly returned to my inventory I started creating my first skybox, plain as that is. Now I just stay away from the ground as a matter of course, unless I have an actual reason to be there.

I live in the sky for a multiplicity of reasons. Firstly, I like to keep my land on the ground like a semi wild parkland, so I don't want my main living space down there, therefore, i live in the sky. Secondly, Higher frame rate. Thirdly, it fits into the back story, I'm working on for my land...... the list goes on. Way way down i n the list, its easier to maintain privacy when I want it, but as I've said many times, i realise privacy is illusory in SL, so its not something i obsess about.

On Forum sim we have a skybox built high up and it's purpose is privacy. Another build down under the ocean - again privacy The sky islands we put up high in the sky just because it looks cool, those people can look at, wander, whatever. The maze we put up high because it's out of the way and doesn't interfere with other structures on the ground, basically we just needed the room.

I build in the sky primarily for an option you didn't offer. Lag reduction. Privacy is my secondary reason. But 90% of my reason is to build in a more low-lag environment. My skyboxes are primarily the studios where I create my work.

Reduced gravity at higher altitudes increases apparent breast buoyancy.

I do all my building up on a platform at 600m. Less lag and my plywood doesn't offend the neighbors. You didn't include reduced lag as an option.

Char Agreed, that answer should have been included, I'd thought about that after I posted the poll, but it was already too late to add it. From: SuezanneC Baskerville Reduced gravity at higher altitudes increases apparent breast buoyancy. ROTFL!! Best answer yet!!! --Fox

My vote is for None of the above, I do high altitude builds because Lag at 700 meters is almost Non existant.

#1 because i can't in rl #2 like one poster above - i love trees, and wanted my little plot to be a 'park' for the neighbors. already too many littlebox houses filling the area - it's like living in a maze with no reference point, so i wanted to provide one... #3 i love the little elevator i customized from seagal neville - it's a fun ride (come grab one, it's free! #4 lag-free, no noise, no annoying traffic; all the previously posted - easily accessible via 'vator for my friends, but it's just enough of a 'doorstop' that strangers just don't bother... #5 and i love, love, love turning the floor invisible and trance-dancing above the clouds in the middle of the night...

My build is called "The Skylounge" .... it'd seem kinda silly to have it on the ground.

I love all my homes in the sky. I have like 5 homes with all different themes in the sky. Plus the 10 apartments we have for rent all in the sky, the honeymoon suite we rent in the sky, boy!!! people sure love to live in the sky...
1) NO LAG, I love it
2) PRIVACY!!! Got to love it, not to have annoying people standing by you and looking at you while you change lol
3) Amazing to live closer to the sky, it is a great feeling living like close to heaven lol
4) Amazing view, the sun looks great and the moon.. you just love it...
5) Is like your little world that just belong to you and your partner if you have one
6) the land downstairs, you clear for trees, park, flowers. I live on the coast.. all water around and wow!! the land with the trees are awsome look..
Anyway... too bad I can't have all this in RL lol that is the fun of SL
One of my theme homes, is all snow, log cabin, ect... I didn't have to get a snow land to feel the snow. We just textured the prims with snow put pines and great screens all simulating pines with snow falling. An ice skating late... and wow, makes you believe that all that belongs to yoU!!!
oki dokie.. is fun to have homes in the sky and you can have lots of fun with it.
Businesses are all in ground thou. People dont go much to sky stores unfortunately.

I don't have a sky build right now except for my store which is not that far off the ground. But I still do have reasons why at times I would have a sky build. Sometimes it's privacy since most people don't fly up that high. Sometimes it's peace and quiet away from "for sale" signs and such. I'm in a PG sim so I don't have to worry about sex shop signs At 300m you're in the clouds literally and it's a relaxing view. At higher altitudes and with the relatively sparse population of skyboxes your scenery consists of the sun or the moon and the stars. Then of course, there's the reduced lag. and this is one of those times when it's a nice thing to say "because we can!"

I'm serioulsy boxed in on 3 sides, so it's easier to get access and to build if out of the way. I know it's their world, their imagination but giant stacked black boxes!?

If SL ever get a option to disable all rendering outside this parcel (land) id so get land. Same reason as everyone else, near land lag lag lag things i dont bother looking at, obstructions, constant audio noises, people who find it fun to walk in stare around go not saying a word
