Most newbies haven't gotten the Carbon-X Rod and can't fly that high unaided.
I have found that I am better at about 400-500m Irony is that the "top of the world" is getting crowded too. I can't be up that high without seeing all my neighbor's sky-boxes.

I like to do creative work up in the sky for many reasons people already mentioned, but none of the poll options. I don't really expect privacy up there because I know its easy to fly high with vehicles and scripts but it does cut down on the random people passing by since not everyone has that ability. Framerates are great up there and I can stay focused on my work with nothing around but the clouds.

and when we planned our community of Skye Condos, we wanted to have nice grounds for all to enjoy as well. Too much clutter now on the ground-give me wide open spaces !! and lots of trees...

There's nothing quite like building a really beautiful skybox way up, then stepping off and plummeting down and watching yourself go splat when you hit the ground. Teleport back up (assuming you remembered to put in a tp) and rinse and repeat. Great fun for hours. And before you ask, no I don't have a life

From: Fox Stirling Just a quick poll to see why most people build houses, boxes, etc way up in the sky and out of sight from the ground. In a thread I was just reading, the OP submits that privacy being a major reason for building high is 100% wrong, this made me wonder exactly how correct this could be. I know my platform in the sky was put there for privacy, so that already invalidates the 100% statement, but still leaves me to wonder why others build so high. --Fox Why do you care -- and what difference does it make? Why people do things like float things in the air is their own business. Mind your own.

Sky theme FTW. My house is a lovely cloud and it blends in with the cloudline. Looks pretty. The view is nice.

Are you having a bad day Merlyn, or are you always this charming? Honestly, I can't understand why you felt like you had to respond in such a nasty way. To answer your questions, I was curious, and it makes no difference. Seriously, it was a simple question, and it doesn't do any harm to ask. -- Fox

I do it so that the ground can stay looking nice and natural, and so that I can have some privacy in the sky.

Why people do things like float things in the air is their own business. Mind your own. This poll was a reasonable thing to ask, as explained in the OP. It is now obvious, as I expected it would be that this poll supports the fact that most people build in the air becasue they want privacy.

As I've mentioned in previous threads, my house hangs over the SL Botanical Gardens and I prefer to stay in the sky so that people can enjoy the gardens without feeling like I'm looking over their shoulder. Not to mention the frame rate is better and fewer people show up at my work space wanting to chat or asking for money. I also just love the view in sky....

We have two building platforms far in the sky above our land.
From one standpoint it gives us privacy for the concentration, from another, there are fewer Lookie Loos up there...and its harder to loose things up there.
PLUS for the incredible rush one gets when you mistep and free fall...well maybe not...but sounds exciting!

I have a private (with well-behaved security orb and really clear "this is private" textures outside) skybox Way Up High on my land, to give me a room for uninterrupted meetings or private whatevers while still leaving my ground-level build open to the general public.
Also, I build UP because there's no additional tier fees for expanding in that direction! (although my main vertically-intruding structures are my Giant Slides which are hopefully relatively Flyer Friendly and only as ugly as necessary)

My sky plattform is mostly for doing photos and larger scale concept stuff, it's all up there so the neighbors don't have to look at all that clutter (a fullbright white box isn't that pretty). When I'm working on small, accessory type stuff I prefer to be in my regular ground-level workshop - I find it so much more pleasant to look up and see the garden, or the various artwork I've decorated the workshop with, rather than just a sky plattform.
