In general terms, amphibian, cetatian, snake and lizard anthros are also lumped in with 'Furry'. Even though they have no fur, they are still 'humans with animal charatceristics' or 'animals with human charatceristics'.

You'll get a million answers really, some people such as kathmandu will bring up the point that the fandom didn't start out sexual and that it came as a split from scifi, others will contend it came from baseball mascots... some people like myself beleave the predominance of homosexual and bisexual men is because it caught like fire over the internet which started out is a mostly male area and until very recently, given that computers were for work, then for nerds, then finally socially acceptable for anyone to play with.

I'll conceed history may be important but what really matters is that you want to know there here and now correct?

The first thing to remember is there isn't a furry fan, or a furry fandom, unless you play as a human and you don't ever invent a animal hybrid for yourself, otherwise you are a furry, period, abandon the art, the roleplay, the company and stop considering yourself a furry, well, you're not a furry anymore.

So given its so mutable you can probably guess that everyone will have their own style, grace and view. It is this sort of organic feel that is causing "furries" to take over secondlife and many internet sites... people have really stopped hiding it lately, posting on normal forms with furry tagline signatures or animal hybrid avatars.. thats the state it is in right now.

You've got furry artists, mostly a good lot but there are many self rightous or "unappricated" types that cause a lot of drama... its best to let them go since for every asshole artist your find one that is quiet and a pleasure to talk to like furball, nekogami or bagheera... or even our very own skidd. Burgeoning artists spring up all the time and its great to encurage them....

Just remember, if you comission an artist you DON"T own their soul... they can always throw the lindens back at you and say fuck off you are being too difficult.

Then you have the "furry religions" which don't even belong to us in any sense, they were around before we were, these are therianthropes who can and do beleave things like they had a past life in the form of an animal and a fragment of that lives in their soul, thus a connection to their animal and their persona helps them get in touch and make peace with that part of themselves, you have shamanisms and totemisms.... best to explore this on your own.

Then you have the common mucky mucks... just people who enjoy the company and the culture.

On the topic of sex and fetish.

Humans have deep roots to sexuality and often they will roleplay sex just as people used to put themselves in the place of a female in a racey romance novel, or the "penis" in a porn video...

Humans have been RPing sex since the internet started... so naturally, a few humans became furries and continued! No, we do not roleplay beastality anymore than the lord of the rings and the AD&D kids roleplaying sex as dwarfs, elves and modrehl... they are ALL FANTASY and do NOT exsist.

Beastality furs are zoophiles or zeta-furs, unless they profess to be one don't assume they are one of the two.

On ageplay, cubfurs are just the adult babies and ageplayers that came over from the "human side" of the internet, these fetishes didn't get their start from furries or even in the united states... look up some of the clubs in sweden and germany if you don't beleave me, some brothels even have *shudders* cribs set up... Dave Attel (the insomiac guy) encountered one such club on the show heheh.

Basically... people had fetishes before they became furries and they brought them in with them, its NOT our fault... No fur is at fault for the actions, brilliance or depravity of any other fur...


Treat furs on a person by person basis... thats what I have to stress... most of us will give our last linden if you show us a little love.

Not a furry in anyway but, just my 2 cents.

Being a furry is just simply about... having a username that is animal related, and what you look like(in character as in IC) on the internet. Wither by picture or a text description. The user character could be either a semi realistic animal, humanoid animal, both etc.

It can be a picture or a text description. Sometimes you could draw some artwork about your character doing different types of things using what type art methods you use(either 2d drawing or 3d poly modeling), or sometimes you roleplay your character in different type of fashion, write stories about your character and what he does etc.

Thats just about it.

It should not effect your social real life in anyway.

However some(or most) people take this way beyond what I described above.

I slip into the fur now and then cuz it makes folks want to pick me up and snuggle me and I'm all for the snuggles.

Call me crazy, but I'm one of 'those' furry lifestylers.

To me, furryness is about being able to express myself in more creative ways, the very beautiful furry art, the connection I feel to animals. I can relate to any cat or dog 9or whatever species really) better then any human being... I just like animals more then I do humans, for some reason. (maybe it has to do with all the bad stuff the human race has done to this beautiful planet, I don't know)

I'm a fox, that wasn't just a choice, it has a lot to do with my behaviour, way of thinking and for some reason, it just feels right that way. I had that since I saw Disney's the Fox and The hound in my early youth, something told me that early that that's how it was supposed to be for me.
I had always been an outsider, the kid that just sat in the corner of the schoolyard reading, the one always peskered fo no clear reasons but maybe my glasses... When I found the fandom, something just clicked and felt right, like being reunited with your long lost family.

SL gave me (and I think this goes fo the majority of furries that were furs before they came to sl, not refering to the people that wear a furry av in SL fo it's cuteness) the chance to finally 'live' in the way we want to/should be living. For me, it's the second option... If I could get the anthro fox body in real life that I have in SL, I'd do it immediately (even tho my colleagues would be very suprised, not to mention my mom... XD)

In short, the fandom to me is about the furry art, being with friends who think and feel alike, and simply being *me*. (The human you see if you were to meet me IRL, is not really me: it's merely the human suit I wear to blend in with the rest of the populace. to bad I'm stuck in it...)

Couldn't agree more! But I'm torn mostly because people who can't read keep looking at my name and thinking "Furry". ::facepalm:: I mean come on! I shave!

And to make matters worse there's a Furry named Fury now! That one I want to hang on my wall. The rest I wanna snuggle and cuddle like Elmyra from Tiny Toons.

I've found Furries to be some of the kindest and most creative people in SL.

It is for me. I don't bother with furry cons or anything else in real life.

Ever notice how many people would be freaked out if when having a conversation with someone if you just suddenly started massaging their shoulders or neck just out of the blue, and yet, that same person who got freaked out doesn't mind at all if you're petting their dog while you're having a conversation. There seems to be a fear of human touch for most people (granted, definitely not ALL people), but to pet a dog or a cat or to hold a rodent seems to be different. One usually doesn't look at a human and think "oh, so cute, I just want to give him/her a hug", but when people see a stuffed animal that's made to look "cute", people will want to squeeze it. I think there would be less desire for the whole "furry" thing if people weren't so afraid of human touch--and I'm not talking about sex--let me make that perfectly clear--I'm talking about human touch mixed with human compassion. How many guys are afraid of hugging, especially long hugs, because someone might think they're "gay"? A whole lot. That's another part of this whole thing. I seem to see a lot more guys that are anti-furries than women--I could be wrong.
