Can someone explain to me what the point of being furry is? Is there some deep meaning to choosing a furry av, or is it just something fun to do? I have heard insinuations here in the forums and in chat that all furries are this or that, but I think it is mainly just malicious slander. I personally have never felt a desire to go furry, maybe because I just don't get it. I happen to like cats, foxes, etc., but why would I want to spend my time in SL as one?

Honestly if you have to ask then its problebly not something you actually want to do. To be a fur is different for many people and they have been explained so many times in so many different threads its ridiculous.
I personally enjoy the fandom for the art and roleplaying. Its just an escape from the dreary same ol same ol. Again it veries from fur to fur some are more into the whole lifestyle then others. In all honesty you could ask the same of the DOM/sub community. Why are they into that? Why do they like to be someone's slave? Why do they like dominating another person? Its a lifestyle choice that more then likely you won't find an answer to or even the same answer. They just do, they enjoy it *shrugs* Anyway basically its different things to different people. If you have to justify it by hearing why someone else does it then you more then likely aren't really that interested. Thats just how I see it - My personal opinion take it or leave it |

Some people say that once you've had a good yiff, you won't want anything diff. I yiffed in a sink once at a party. Had a bit too much to drink. |

I don't know much about furries, but all of the ones I have met have been extremely kind and sweet. They are just too cute! I could cuddle them all day long! I know, probably not what they're looking for, but I'm a sucker for animals (not in an icky way, relax).
Best way to learn more, ask some of them in game or go to a furry and non-furry event. |

What's being a human about? What's being in SL about? What's anything about?
Everyone does things for different reasons. Furries here for one reason or another (and likely many) find being an animal here appealing. The term traditionally refers to what might be thought of as a sexual subculture in my experience, but there are certainly furries here who do not think of their avs that way or act out anything like that in SL, though they are probably the minority. "Yiff," for those who don't know, is supposedly the sound foxes make when mating, and has broad usage among furs to describe mating, express joy, etc. |

As has been said before: Ask 5 furries what it means to be furry, and you'll get 7 answers.

I agree with what everybody else has said; it's different for everybody. I go around in furry avatars because I find it more fun to roleplay a non-human than a human. It's all about aesthetics for me.
The whole sexual subculture thing, and the lifestyle thing, are seperate types of furrydom. The "standard" furry fan just likes furries for their own sake; the same reason we all find Bugs Bunny or any other cartoon character appealing. It's just fun. |

As has been said before: Ask 5 furries what it means to be furry, and you'll get 7 answers. I rather like that comment. ![]() "Furry" is a metagenre. That means that like "Pagan" or "Texan", there are a lot of very different people who feel, correctly, that the title applies to them, and yet who have often radically different definitions of what it means. The only unifying factor among them is an interest in 'animals with Human characteristics', or 'Humans with animal characteristics'. I know furries who think it's all about sex, and I know other furries that are completely celibate virgins, or who have long-standing monogamous relationships. I know furries who are straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or in a few cases, of ambiguous gender. I know furries who consider 'being furry' to be a deeply significant personal feeling, much like finding one's totem animal on a spirit quest, and others for whom it has no deeper meaning at all. I know furries who are less than 10 years old, and furries in their 50's. I know furries who think animals make great pets, and wouldn't dream of doing anything sexual with them - and others who think animals are great as intimate companions. (The latter of which is actually a very small portion of the group, from my own experience - far less than 5% of those I know.) I know furries who are really into roleplaying and pretending to be an anthro fox, or whatever, in places like SL or in real life, and I know others who don't want to be a furry themselves, but just like the art and/or stories. I know furries who spend thousands of real dollars on mascot costumes or 'fursuits', and others who own no furry costume items at all. (Myself, in RL I have a fur fox tail that I can hang on my belt, and that is it... And I only wear that at a furry convention or similar all-furry gathering.) Furries range from innocent fans of Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, to individuals whose personal preferences and practices can't be described in these forums. Furries are, in short, people... _____________________

but why would I want to spend my time in SL as one? I'm a part time furry. Let's face it, our own human avatars are just a dolls. Most human avatars don't resemble the real us much at all. If that was the case you'd see a lot more beer gutts a saggy boobs around. So what's the difference? Everyone's a cartoon in sl. So why not add some fur? It's all fake. _____________________
