Oh another weird thought. Even though then, it was considered futurist, could we now go back and read Jules Verne's works as "steampunk"? perhaps, put it in a new light?

For steampunk fans, Rise of Legends looks great.

Cyberpunk > Steampunk, but steampunk is still pretty cool.

Ever since I was introduced to the engineering heritage of folk like Ohm, Tesla and the like I got hooked on the idea of Steampunk and about that time I got exposed to Space 1889 which really did the trick. It's quite a facinating idea about the divergent possibilities of society and technology, and like Spider says - it's quite refreshing to see the jarring presence of crude technology.

Probably my favorite bit of fiction from this genre recently has been Foglios 'Girl Genius'. Not the greatest writing I've ever read, but I'm an old fan of their work and they explore all sorts of possiblities with it; hyper-intelligent animals, reanimated life, lots of clunky steam machines, dirgibles, all in a psuedo-victorianesque setting.

In the past I've attempted more ambitious creations in this kind of theme, but I'm rarely able to keep focused on one thing for long and on the other hand I don't find it a very marketable item given it's small appeal. I'ld rather just work on the occasional funky item here and then as it strikes me.

Steampunk vendors unite!

I've set up a Victorian estate, Withnail Academy in Clear.
I have a number of vendor locations available for people to sell items which fit the climate.

This was the Ouranos entry for the trainstation thingy awhile ago, steampunkishly themed, pictures small from SL's export functioning :p . Didn't get accepted, but may have a use for it someday for something.

I've made steam particles, textures and script, if anyone is working on a project in need of it I'd be willing to give it open source. Should probably post it and the UUID's somewhere. But meh, eventualy. I don't have much use for it myself right now, so might as well put it out there.

Kazenojin is but a legend in my newish eye!

Oz, I hope that does get used for something—hey, set it up on Azure Islands's new train express. WHAT? YOU DON'T HAVE ONE?

Well, there you go!

While I am merely a humble antiques dealer, one might discover items in this genre at the West Trade LTD Antiques Show House in Ohno.

By "heating" a batch of 'gas molecule' prims via a simple internal script - I once attempted to move a piston. Presumably, the gas laws *should* hold in SL, albeit with a very macromolecular steam.

I do not recall the fascinating results, nor what happened to the sim, and I'm sticking to that story.

Do you remember when there were no blank blocks on the SL map? When you could fly from one end to the other, with populated land below you all the way?

No - neither can I really - but sometimes, as I awake, in that small moment between pre-caching and my clothes downloading - I remember.

That sim of which you speak no longer used to exist. There was a point at which it existed, then for a while after your experiment it used to exist, now it doesn't even do that. And there are other sims around it that no longer "used to exist", and some that just "used to exist" but are becoming vague and blurry in my memory. And now there is so much void upon the face of the earth, and a quiet voice in the back of my head has started counting down from 7 and I don't know what it means and Mr. Hand says I mustn't worry but I do and I don't know why or who he is or where he came from and the voice reached 5 just the other day I think but I'm not sure

not sure

It's funny you should mention Diamond Age with steampunk... the irony is that the newest computer technology that Stephenson described as the basic for nanotech was in fact rod logic.

The book is hyper-geeky, even for Stephenson's standards, though it widely varies to the opposite extreme (see: bizarre psychadelic Drummers scene in between the book's two acts)

As for SL - consider we run on a physics engine. I remember a town hall last fall when Philip was talking about how prim limits will go up as tech does - envisioning technology to do things like bring vehicles from the clunky things they are now, to where wheels are really rotating and gripping, to where the engine actually pumps particles to generate power.

/johnnycarsonvoice Wild stuff.

so i can play Gran Turismo 4 in SL?

I haven't really looked into the Steampunk genre, I understand things like Wild Wild West were sort of Steampunk, as was, if anyone remembers, the old show called "Legend".

I never really did any steampunk work. I made a jetpack inspired by the Rocketeer (called the RocketNaut), a rocket hoverbike, and a small floating post-apoc airship. I'm presently designing a large flying aircraft carrier (non-moving for now) to station above a sandbox or wherever anyoen would care to host it. That's going to look like something out of Sky Captain, or... Tale Spin, maybe.

If anyone asks, I just say my stuff if powered by Cold Primolient Fusion. It's actally powered by rehashed scripts that I chopped alot of excess crap out of, meh.

Steam is cool, tho.

I did. I want to make a full-scale model to live in, but I can't find any hard specs like length or detailed-ish diagrams like people have done for Star Trek.

Did I ever tell you the tale of the day I saved the world by discovering a new supply of steam?

Of course, I fell in love and destroyed a civilization in the process. But that's beside the point.

It's in my library at Withnail Academy. In a bookshelf near the balcony on the second floor.

Pip-pip!

Indeed, Sir? Was that when you managed to defeat that dastardly Steam Tyrant and his horde of parboiled cannibals? And, I must confess that some failing in my own ancestral line has left me quite without the perspicacity to relate the lumineferous Aether and phrenology that I gather was so crucial.

BTW, I meant to post this here eventually...

Steampunk list
12-21-2005 17:10
I wonder if we can get a few more people on the Steampunk list?

It'd be nice to have some persistent RP happening.

The steampunk community is alive and well at Withnail Academy, but the steampunk list is a little quiet for my tastes.
