Here is the problem that no one is looking at.
It is not a new problem, and honestly has nothing to do with P2P or lack of it. It has to do with continued lack of consideration by indiviudals for those around them and lack of zoning on the mainland. That DJ store could easily coexist in a residential area without lagging it to death if the owner took the time to optimize it. I don't know if you spoke to them or not, or just moved, but not every store lags the hell out of a sim - just badly scripted and texture loaded ones.
For more than a year, over 16,000m of land that I owned in Federal, which is 3 sims away from a telehub was unusable because Club Elite built their club there, and it was the most popular destination in SL. Every single day was the lag fest from hell - you could not build or move or do much of anything there, which is why I ended buying up all of Mavericks to prevent it from happening to me again. Telehubs had very little impact on clubs, since they would often TP a lot of their patrons anyway, and people would still go to them even if they were far from a telehub.
Hopefully Linden Lab will continue their efforts to help make scripts, lights, etc.. have less impact on sims so that one land owner cannot ruin a sim for everyone else in it.
