what game are you playing?
my secondlife is
"enter a world where everone is an artisan"
"start your own virtual real estate business"
"create and market virtual business solutions"
"instant socialization at your finger tips"
"zomg RESmODS!"
all this criticism about the state of the secondlife community is about as substantiated as saying that the internet is 99% porn.
if there REALLY was a fraud problem in SL, the clientele wouldn't be growing consistently at 10% a month for the last 2 years.

From: Merlyn Bailly Anarchy is why they invented MONARCHY during the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age -- somebody with a bodyguard of guys with bronze battleaxes decided that enough was enough, and someone had to be in charge of the madhouse, rather than have their little sister raped by the tribe across the next hill or their baby eaten by the neighbors. And then they researched Philosophy for the free tech advance.

From: Jauani Wu what game are you playing? Currently? Tetris attack on the SNES, and Miners4k at: http://javaunlimited.net/games/view.php?id=54From: Jauani Wu "enter a world where everone is an artisan" If everyone was an artisan, there would be no economy For the economy to survive, grow, and remain healthy, the truth needs to stay closer to "everyone is a shallow consumerist" From: Jauani Wu "start your own virtual real estate business" Sorry, you can make more money with less work in the RL real estate business. Buying and selling a single apartment can net you at least as much money as the average land baron gets in a year. From: Jauani Wu "create and market virtual business solutions" That's my day job, J-Wu From: Jauani Wu "instant socialization at your finger tips" I did that 10 years ago on IRC, and heck, wtf, I already HAVE a social life IRL. Doesn't everyone? I thought you were supposed to, but clearly I am behind the times. A good social life must necessarily involve lots of time spent sitting on my ass, staring at a computer screen! From: Jauani Wu "zomg RESmODS!" WOOT! Drama! That's the fun part of SL and you know it From: Jauani Wu all this criticism about the state of the secondlife community is about as substantiated as saying that the internet is 99% porn. The difference is that real porn is far more interesting and arousing than SL's ken & barbie porn. I hear there's real sex going on between real people too, but this is me being old fashioned again... that's sooo last century From: Jauani Wu if there REALLY was a fraud problem in SL, the clientele wouldn't be growing consistently at 10% a month for the last 2 years. Well, they used to say 20%, lately it's been more like 15%, but the thing is, eBay has lots of fraud and it's also pretty popular. The key difference is that eBay tries to fight it, or at least tries to look like they care about it and tries to reassure their users, and their potential users, that eBay is a safe place to do business. Why can't we get some love from LL with regard to this newfangled 3d eBay thingy?

From: Eggy Lippmann If everyone was an artisan, there would be no economy For the economy to survive, grow, and remain healthy, the truth needs to stay closer to "everyone is a shallow consumerist" Or, maybe, "everyone can't do everything". MOST people I meet in SL seem to have a shop of some kind, even if their wares are inferior. I *can* do a little of everything but still buy a hell of a lot because I value my time. I'd rather spend that time on things I prefer to do - buildings and avatars - than fiddling scripting jobs or vehicles, since as much as I like to USE SL vehicles, I find making them kind of painful. Although this may say more about who I meet than the SL population at large. From: someone Sorry, you can make more money with less work in the RL real estate business. Buying and selling a single apartment can net you at least as much money as the average land baron gets in a year.
True enough, but I imagine many land barons are doing it as a hobby, just as I run my own money-making schemes on the basis of a hobby that pays for itself. Even the ones that are doing it "seriously" doubtless have a day job with a very few exceptions. From: someone I did that 10 years ago on IRC, and heck, wtf, I already HAVE a social life IRL. Doesn't everyone? I thought you were supposed to, but clearly I am behind the times. A good social life must necessarily involve lots of time spent sitting on my ass, staring at a computer screen! Actually, it kind of does for me, but I live out in the middle of nowhere. We have a lot of open tracts of nowhere on this continent, you see.

From: Kim Anubis I know what game Aliasi has been playing. My civilization demands NUCLEAR FISSION. In exchange, we offer the secrets of POTTERY.

From: Aliasi Stonebender Actually, it kind of does for me, but I live out in the middle of nowhere. We have a lot of open tracts of nowhere on this continent, you see. Aww, you should come to Europe! I once got lost in the woods, so I just walked in a random direction and stumbled upon a village after an hour or two It was still scary though. I don't use SL for socializing all that much since I got people's contacts and can chat with them on standard IM programs - as you can imagine, I was really excited at their willingness to open up the IM system by moving to Jabber. I guess the big city does have some advantages - Last friday, I went out to watch Transamerica with a couple of friends. Last saturday, I went out to watch North Country, then we had dinner at a mexican restaurant, then we went to an irish pub... yesterday (sunday), I went out with a friend of my gf's and her mother to take a walk in the park, and use the free exercise machines they had there, then we went to a café for some coffee (duh) and toast. It was fun and I plan on doing it every weekend They even have barbecues and free wood that we can use to roast sausages and stuff like that. When days get longer, we certainly will!

Interesting....

I got curious, so did some math. The following adds the cost of one month sim maintainence into the theoretical exercise of buying a sim from the Lindens and developing it. It does not count developement costs.
Check my math please:
(280L/US)*1450 $US=406000$L to buy your own private sim at the current exhange rate - parcle it out and sell it for cost, hope of course that all parcels sell in one month...
406000 L/ 65,536 m2 = 6.195 L/m2
Is this the artificially inflated land price everyone is talking about?

my response directed more to lordfly's summary of SL. From: Eggy Lippmann If everyone was an artisan, there would be no economy For the economy to survive, grow, and remain healthy, the truth needs to stay closer to "everyone is a shallow consumerist" you mean "if every one was a good artisan," which is not something i said. definitely most take a jab at making something, even if it's a constant endeavor of home redecorating or av pimping. From: someone Sorry, you can make more money with less work in the RL real estate business. Buying and selling a single apartment can net you at least as much money as the average land baron gets in a year.
you have to qualify that statement. sure if you have a lot of starting capital. but if you only have a few grand, investing in SL is a lot easier, and a lot less risky. regardless, the point is that a lot more people that i come in contact with in SL are making it their hobby or their full time occupation to particpate in the virtual economy than in pixel slapping and blowing up fetuses. From: someone That's my day job, J-Wu what is your point? From: someone I did that 10 years ago on IRC, and heck, wtf, I already HAVE a social life IRL. Doesn't everyone? I thought you were supposed to, but clearly I am behind the times. A good social life must necessarily involve lots of time spent sitting on my ass, staring at a computer screen! really, what is your point? is the topic of this thread the prevalent culture of SL (which you argue is morally bankrupt) or about eggy lippman, mr cool-movie-goer who can conquer a forest without a compass?

Even when I was tired and frustrated in SL, I never thought of the place as being as bankrupt as it is being characterized. I've met new friends, hung out with artists and musicians and gotten a chance to challenge myself by developing new skills. I've never felt 'ripped off' in Second Life because, even if that pair of shoes wasn't as cute as I thought it would be, I only spent $1 CAD on it (less than a bag of chips from the machine). I have often bought items in second life and thought OMG I can't believe this was so inexpensive considering all the time and effort that went into this! or Holy Cow, this is a freebie?!? Kewl! I feel so so lucky that my friend from TSO brought me here. I only went back to TSO once after that, to complete a virtual divorce and give away my stuff. No place is perfect, but SL is the best of what I've seen in terms of online worlds. (Best here meaning no shooting unless you want to, no getting raped as a sanctioned game practice, and as expensive as you want to make it.) From: Jauani Wu what game are you playing?
