There is no such thing as 'fairly unique'.

Either something is unique - ie there is only one in existence - or it is not.

Grammar nazis. :)

Think Furnation is gone. Closed when DI went away.

From: Aliasi Stonebender
Lots of 'em, Shirly.

Furnation is probably the single largest one at the moment. (Although also something of the single laggiest... *grin*)

Luskwood is the oldest, is on the mainland, and (should you prefer it) is in a PG sim. (Three, actually.)

The Forest is the oldest furry-theme private sim, I believe. Not as busy as it used to be, but still a fair crowd.

There's also further sub-specialties that come to mind; the Wild is somewhat Myst-themed, for example.

Gee, for a place that just opened rentals and I was shopping in earlier today, it's awfully alive for being gone. :p

(Seriously, no, DI didn't have a thing to do with it; FN was temporarily down due to a billing snafu but it's been back up for some time now.)

I was pointing out that SL has a number of groups that are fairly unique to it.

Furries
Gorian
Robots
Elves
Military

any other major groups that I am missing? (I am sure there are)

SL Kids, for one.

A military-employed canine robot battling it out in a no holds barred submission match with a gorean elf, the match being wagered on by land barons using ill-gotten properties for betting.

Or not. :D

I'd pay to see that.

Thanks for the info, now as for different sub-groups on secod life I'm surprised no-one has mentioned nubes. *braces for nube jokes*

You mean how now that we have flexprims we can have curly nubes? Or with occlusion culling you can be in the middle of a thick patch of nubes and not feel the heat?

Will reduction in stipend ever result in a widespread trimming of nubes?

That sort of thing?

OK. Inept phrasing. Popular? Geeze. You people love to take a statement and nitpick the spirit out of it. You are all generally smart... did you not know what I was getting at?

No, honestly. Because none of those are even close to unique to SL. So I really don't see what your point is. "OMG, We have furries!!!" "So? furries are everywhere". "BUT WE HAVE FURRIES!!!!"...

How about nudists? Not the ones that run around like a stripped Ken and Barbie dolls simply because they haven’t bought clothing, but the ones that chose to spend the money on sexual anatomy instead.

Gor is not unique to SL. There are some sizable Gorean communities in RL, and some of them migrated to SL as a group. (Other people have discovered Gor here, but I'm not talking about them.) John Norman's books have been around for at least 20 years, maybe more.

And yesterday I saw a talking noodle. If we find another, that's a group you won't find in RL.

Waaah, I don't belong to any of the groups mentioned so far ... sniff. I don't even qualify as economist.

The only thing furry about me is a beard
The only thing gory about me are my jokes (they're gory jokes, not Gor jokes)
I have only one robotic arm so I'm not a robot
I'm way too tall to be an elf
I don't fit any scifi movie type or other

... hmm ... maybe I can experiment with being a slut ... (ponders)

I know ... cyborg-tie dye wearers ... bleh.

Shirly Evans: "Uhm, oh my, uh... how much did you say it cohst?"
John Doe: "1000 lindens."
Shirly Evans: "Uh... yeah..."
John Doe: "I didn't want to go for the discount ones you know."
Shirly Evans: "By any chance was that priced by the foot?"
John Doe: "Yes, why?"
Shirly Evans: "Uhm... I think you may have been ripped off." *snickers and runs away*

I'm afraid not even "fairly" cuts it. All of the above have existed years (more like decades) before the home PC was even a practicality. :)

I have to agree... and decades is closer.

Furries -- Groups loving this have existed since manga. Cosplay and roleplay (tabletop, LARP, and finally, online) have been doing the fur-thang for years n years n years. Just check out the world-wide conventions.

Gorean -- John Norman wrote the series starting in the 1970's and is something folks have been playing at for years, offline and on BBS/chatrooms. Some of the earliest online encounters I've had with the Kajira-lovin' set stem from IRC chatrooms back in the early 90's.

Robots, Elves, Military -- Again, re-enactment groups have been hammering all 3 themes online and off since I was a kidlet and I'm no spring chicken.

I honestly can't think of any group on SL I've heard tell of that's even remotely unique. In fact, part of why I'm comfortable there is because it's a 3D rehash of many things I've loved in other forms of presentation.

I figure at the rate of growth the place shows, it's only a matter of time before we see large groups of World of Darkness fiends, Dragonlance lovers, and Lord of the Rings enthusiasts banding together for RP. I know the vampires of the Camarilla are already spreading rapidly.

Whenever I see the name Furnation, it makes me think of that Janet Jackson song Rhythm Nation, which in turn amuses me. Carry on.

Actually the first furry tendancies appeared arround the begining of man's exsistance, see furry is not just a wierd little thing someone is into, its a way of life or thinking. Men used to characterise temselves as animals so hey would gain some of that animal's abilities and the Egiption gods, well some of them were slightly fur like. So decades doesn't even come close, hell some of the other stated sub-devisions have been arround just as long just not in name, though I can't speak for Guro, never heard of that one before.

I was annoyed, but not now.

At first I was annoyed by the anal-retentive (is that hyphenated?) english nazis nit-picking the spirit of my question over incorrect phrasing... but then a friend pointed out that the thread wouldn't have gone anywhere without these people with no life to prod the thread to life. So thank you. Made it to 2 pages even! Please continue!

And to everyone else who could see past my poor spelling, vocabulary, and grammer and understand what I was asking for... THANK YOU. And those combo-jokes! REALLY love those because that was what I was saying to my RL buddies... you have furries and robots and vampires all interacting together in a generally good spirited manner. (which was the "uniqueness' I was talking about)
