I was talking to a RL person (yes, people still get drunk in bars and talk)

I was pointing out that SL has a number of groups that are fairly unique to it.

Furries
Gorian
Robots
Elves
Military

any other major groups that I am missing? (I am sure there are)

Erm, none of those are actually unique to SL.

Perhaps you were more thought than you drunk you were? :D

I'm afraid not even "fairly" cuts it. All of the above have existed years (more like decades) before the home PC was even a practicality. :)

Not even close to fairly. These are pretty well established sub-cultures long before SL came around. SL just lets them intermingle easier!

Mmm... Canine robots battling it out in a no holds barred submission match! .... I just can't fit elf into that. :(

None of that are unique to SL.

IMO, the only reason why people notice things like that is that in SL external appearance and behavior are much more clearly expressed. For example, if you go to a Linux IRC channel, furriness will be invisible unless they start talking about something related, while at the SL LUG you can instantly tell who's furry and who not. Same for all the other ones.

A military-employed canine robot battling it out in a no holds barred submission match with a gorean elf, the match being wagered on by land barons using ill-gotten properties for betting.

Or not. :D

Here are a few other subgroups, off the top of my head:

Gay
Vampire/Goth
Star Wars (Jedi/Sith)
Volunteers

Check out the dedicated group forums for even more ideas :)

A Tiny Furry piloting an advanced military mecha, going to rescue the Elves from oppression by the Evil Land BaronTM, doing battle against his Evil Ninja Pirate Viking Cannibal Gorean Penguins.

Gosh, I think I saw that Anime...

Have an answer to that one - a game my brother and I played years ago - elves and robots included.

OK. Inept phrasing. Popular? Geeze. You people love to take a statement and nitpick the spirit out of it. You are all generally smart... did you not know what I was getting at?

Several decades is hardly "nitpick", when talking about timeframes under a century. :p

Somewhat more seriously, none of the groups you mentioned are in any way, shape, or form unique to SL, "fairly" or otherwise.

Now, if you had commented on the diversity of SL groups, and never even considered using "unique", qualifiers or not, this subthread wouldn't exist. :p

This is getting too funny.

Though I will admit Second life so far seems to be one of a few 3d worlds in which furries like myself are accepted, though I would like to know where in the heck ta find a 'hub' of furry activity.

Lots of 'em, Shirly.

Furnation is probably the single largest one at the moment. (Although also something of the single laggiest... *grin*)

Luskwood is the oldest, is on the mainland, and (should you prefer it) is in a PG sim. (Three, actually.)

The Forest is the oldest furry-theme private sim, I believe. Not as busy as it used to be, but still a fair crowd.

There's also further sub-specialties that come to mind; the Wild is somewhat Myst-themed, for example.

There is no such thing as 'fairly unique'.

Either something is unique - ie there is only one in existence - or it is not.
