While I agree with the general sentiments here, I can't help but remember that over the last two weeks at least six other people have expressed the same or similar ideas long before people in this thread did. And they disappeared without a trace.

Why? And why now are these same sentiments recognized?

A lot of good ideas get lost on these forums, only the resurface when restated by someone else. I'm increasingly aware of that and it puzzles me.

Yes, I am hijacking this thread. Because apparently I can't open and post my own anymore because Robin has got a hard on for me.

More baiting and derailing because of your own issues again. Cheap shots at Pathfinder, now Robin, who's next?

Seth,

Often times great suggestions are made in the midst of a thread that becomes a train wreck, or that gets derailed and the original point is lost. That is what is so maddening right now - everything is lost in this swirl of chaos, and it has to stop somehow.

Look .. I apologize for hijacking the thread.

But really.. stop for a second and put yourself in my shoes. I am being singled out for .. what.. saying we should turn images off in the main forum?

<gasp> Yes, lock this thread! Immediately! <gasp>

Clearly the only explanation is that Robin has decided to censor me because clearly my unpopular ideas are no longer palatable for these forums.

Fair enough, I get the message, I'll have to stop posting - I have been censored.

Cris, I was attempting to stay on topic, I had an idea, and I was encouraging everyone to stay on topic.

But Robin just decides to wade in there and close it down. What kind of incentive is this to stay on topic? To encourage others to stay on topic?

None.

It's pretty upsetting .. I had assumed that the Lindens were more concerned about the level of insulting dialogue in these forums and not so much about the particular content.

Clearly .. I was wrong. The insults can fly around as much as they want as long as we keep a certain segment of the Forum population happy.

Cindy,
Welcome to Secondlife and the forums. Some to most of what you missed was not in the best light of what SL is so don't feel misled. You will still find plenty of help and advice in all of the forums just be careful of what you listen to and have no fear of questioning something that sounds 'fishy' I extend to you the opportunity to contact me in game whenever you have a question or need help. Again, Welcome :)

Lecktor, thank you very much for the welcome! I'm assuming that if we meet up it will be for more than just a "bite"? :)

I appreciate your offer immensely. I can get really lost easily, and it's not just because I'm a natural blonde ;) I'll take you up on your offer.

I'm sorry.. I'm just a little enraged here.

They are clearly taking out their lack of experience in proper forum moderation on people like me.

Blaze,

Take this for what you will, it is some constructive criticism. I imagine the reason you are being singled out is not for your contrary opinions. What they are concerned about is keeping it a positive environment, and whether you see it or not, you have a tendency to start topics that serve no purpose but to incite a reaction. This is not condusive to a healthy forum environment. For example, the SLPICs thread that you started was insulting to me - you never spoke to me to find out my feelings before starting out the gate stating they were doing something wrong.

If you want civility and respect, show some and it will come back to you. Please stop stirring the pot. You are wildly intelligent - the fact that you made an application that can interact with the SL UI is impressive. The fact that you then start a thread about the dangers of spam using the tool you created - um, not so impressive. Put some more thought into what the potential could be.

I don't want to see you censored or removed from the forums, but I would admittedly like to see less strife, and whatever you can do to reduce that will only help you in the long run.

Well, no, I suppose I shouldn't have connected you specifically to all this..

However, the point being is that for all this anti-fic attitude, and it being all so much as pure forum troll garbage, people neglect to mention that it does happen sometimes.

The forums are a public square. Whatever we post here we do in public with full knowledge that we will be judged by what we say and how we behave by the rest of the public, including the forum moderators and other LL employees. It's illogical to believe that what you do in the public square will not potentially be discussed by the public, LL, or a combination of the two. If the forum moderators or anyone else at LL has an opinion about me they are free to express it to whomever they wish, wherever tand whenever they wish, as is everyone else. That's the nature of engaging in a public square. You neglect to mention that what Pathfinder was talking about was asking people to exercise moderation and not engage in flame wars. He admitted that we have a particularly problem causing poster who skirts around the TOS. That's not a secret. We all know it's true and exactly who it is. But, while admitting this is a problem, Path basically defended that person's right to be here and speak and urged everyone to try not to pick fights. To call what happened in the IRC channel gossip is a mischaracterization and deliberately inflammatory.

The IRC channel is open to anyone who chooses to go there and participate. There is nothing exclusive about it. It has nothing to do with a special cabal of priveledged players with undue influence, and you know that full well. You could just as easily have been there as anyone else, two years old or two days old. Trying to tie it to the concept of FIC is once again a mischaracterization and deliberately inflammatory.

"People neglect to mention that it does happen sometimes"

People neglect to mention it because it doesn't happen... what does happen is not gossip, FIC, or anything else. It is public discourse which we are all participating in with free will, and we should all be willing to accept that what we do here may become to subject of conversation among anyone and everyone. If you're uncomfortable with that then you shouldn't engage in the public square.

You can't claim the high road if you're deliberately spreading false characterizations and hyperbole. If you're inciting people and they respond with strong language, who's really the one causing problems? It's like a little kid poking his sister over and over and over until she finally slugs him in the face, and then he cries "Mom! She hit me!" If you're constantly getting harsh reactions then take responsibility for it yourself. Think about what you post and the language you use. Please.

Blaze, you haven't been singled out. We closed 3 threads for review. All had become negative, angry and full of innuendo. All were being added to faster than we could edit them or make any reasonable determination as to the best way to moderate them.

Once we've had a chance to go through the threads we'll edit them as needed, respond where it seems warranted, and repost.

I have been trying to do this for the past two weeks. My policy is, no direct attacks. If someone directly attacks me, I will report the post (I will not respond). If someone tells a lie about me, I will correct the lie and only the lie in civilized terms. The rest of my posts are general contributions.

This sounds like a really excellent, super idea, Aimee. I'm making a little sticky with this to put on my wall! It's SO helpful.

Like how you used it right now, because you weren't in that IRC channel at all, so it wasn't fair to relate it to you.

P.S. Did you know that when new people sign up there's a picture of you on the new accounts page? Luv, HH, a big fan :o

While I appreciate the sentiment here very much, I hope this isn't the answer for everyone. Whether anyone likes it or not there are people here with very specific agendas who should not be left unchallenged. When you have someone trying to convince new residents that they're being opressed and treated unfairly... that those most involved in building the world into what it has become don't want them here... that this group hates that group and that group hates this group... that their's is "the way" and all others should fall before them (and by the way, rent my land)... that's not something you can simply walk away from, unless you don't care about the very real damage it causes and what a disservice is being done to the uninformed who latch on to those ideas.

There are now many people who believe the FIC is real... that they have special powers and LL at their bidding... that they're all a bunch of stuck up snobs out to screw people over... that they really don't have a chance to live their dreams here because the contest is fixed. We shouldn't abandon those people to believing that message, and they will because it will go on being repeated over and over and over again. It's already happening. Is allowing that to go unchallenged really the high road or is it simply the easy way out?

What needs to change is how these people are challenged and how their arguments are refuted... but refuted they must be. I'm as sick of this as everyone else (and guiltier than most in contributing to the vitriol), but whether we like it or not there is a battle for hearts and minds going on here, and I'm not willing to simply retreat or surrender territory to the rampaging horde from crazytown.
