I have an idea. I'm sure it may not fly but I hate being mapped.. not that I'm having a issue with it now..but this just ran across my brain.. Since Lindens won't take mapping out of the picture.. why not have something to notify the person being mapped of who is mapping them.. a little pop up window or something?

I have my friends list loaded into an orbitter auto-scan script.
They don't see much if they map me.

That could be potentially annoying.

Sometimes I map a person just to see where they are in the world and never go see them or message.

I'm weird like that.

I think that is actually one of the reasons people would like to see mapping removed, or made optional. Tracking somebody's location and movements on the map - especially when they have no idea you are doing it - can be an invasion of their privacy, friend or not.

Checking someone's location on the map is hardly an invasion of privacy.

You would accept this in real life then?

Dont get me wrong.. some people I dont mind mapping me.(my fiance' and my in game daughter). but there are others when you are like wtf... I think its an invasion of privacy and nosey.. I mean who wants ppl knowing their every move? Maybe there should be a option where you can "check" who you would like to map you and who you wouldnt.. Or when you make someone a friend.. there should be a yes or no button saying "Would you like for this person to be able to map you?" "Yes/No".. and on your friends list at the bottom... there should be a tab somewhere near the "grant/revoke modify rights" tab to either allow mapping/ or not..

LOL

Real life? This is Second Life, not real life. Many comparisons don't crossover.

Look, checking the map to see where a friend is and the contemplating whether or not go to see them (usually I dont go if they are with other people) is not an invasion of privacy by any measure.

I can use Google Earth to check my mom's driveway for her car to see if she is home before calling and that isn't an invasion of privacy either.... and that's real life for you.

I don't give my calling card to anyone I would mind tracking me down.

Anyone with my calling card can come before calling. It does not bother me. Company is great :)

No you cannot. The images used in Google earth are months, and in many cases years old. You have no way to track your Mom's location without installing a tracking device. Do you think she would let you?

I dont think giving someone my card gives them permission to map me.. I dont want anyone walking in on a romantic date with me and my fiance'.. It's rude..Just because YOU dont do it Brianna doesn't mean everyone else doesn't.. Everyone doesn't think that way.. Just because I give you my friendship does not mean I am welcoming you to map me anytime.. its because I want to establish a friendship..simple as that

Hey those are months old? No wonder I never see her car there  and use her cell-phone.

Why do you think everyone has something to hide?

Whats wrong with being able to see if someone is home? I can peek out into my parking lot and see lots of folks are home so what difference does it make if I use a satellite?

Really? You mean everyone doesn't want to be like Bri?

No need to point out the obvious. Im not universalizing my opinions.

I don't. You know, wanting to maintain a little privacy does not mean that I am doing something nasty or embarrasing.

So peek out of your prim windows and see if your next door neighbor is home. You don't need a grid-wide Lojack device installed on all of your friends to see if your neighbor is home, do you?

I think it is an *ok* option, albeit with potential to make SL a little less social. I just think they need to fix this list of features first: (as catalogued in this thread /108/42/102462/1.html)

Avatar
* Attachment prims 'go missing' when crossing region boundaries
* Attachments momentarily disappear on region crossing
* Attachments show up on different attachment point on login
* Avatar and vehicle wind up in a spin and stuck in ground for a few seconds when quickly crossing regions in a vehicle
* Avatar partially remains in "teleporting" animation (fly up) after teleport
* Avatar sinks into the ground, then is ejected and bounces across the sim due to a physics issue
* Avatars with complex attachments (e.g. furries) rubber band on region crossing.
* Cannot see another avatar's jacket's change of upper fabric until lower fabric selected
* Changing the outfit on avatar is not reflected in the other avatar's view
* Flying state is incorrect after teleport
* Muted avatars can offer you teleports
* Observers see you facing a different direction when sitting on the ground
* Pushing an avatar across a region boundry is not smooth
* Should be at the same relative height after p2p teleport
* You automatically sit when you approach a vehicle you fell off of

Building
* Can't delete an object that was unlinked after selecting "Edit linked" parts
* Inworld objects can't be selected when behind HUD object set transparent via llSetAlpha(0,ALL_SIDES)
* Object scale jitters when scaled past 10m limit
* Vehicles rezzed on a prim will not work in all cases

Camera
* Alt-zooming on an object makes it harder to select
* Followcam jitters when backing up
* Opening notecard moves camera if Av is seated
* Zoomed in HUD doesn't un-zoom after exiting Edit mode if you detach all HUD objects
* Zooming out from yourself and looking up, causes screen darkness - depends on position of avatar

Graphics
* Black flashing rendering bug inside clouds
* Double stream of particles sometimes shown when editing an object
* Grass is in front of alpha objects
* Ground/terrain stays lit after deleting light source
* HUD attachment changes ground textures on Mac
* Lighting on avatar seems to flicker at times when you are in the dark
* Moving viewer window between two monitors causes fonts to look like barcodes; font width is ~ 3 px
* nVidia 5200 on Mac swaps texture mips
* Object faces stay lit when focused on
* Objects are momentarily visible at <0,0,0> before moving to their correct position
* Selection silhouette appears in snapshots
* Sky not redrawing correctly for 30 seconds or so when SL brought back as front application
* Tube with alpha always draws inside out

Inventory
* Deleted gestures still work
* Drag and drop item from inventory while performing inventory search and item will be deselected

Permissions
* Apply last-owner of parent objects to rezzed objects

Physics
* Mass doesn't change on attachments until region cross
* Tube of a certain shape has an incorrect collision bounding box

Scripting/LSL
* Bad script chat can break normal chat
* llSetName doesn't update the inventory name of an attachment
* llSetText on child prims disappears on attach
* llSetText/Hover Text is scaled/fuzzy on HUD attachments
* llTakeControls allowing rotation even if set to not pass keys
* llTargetOmega does not change spin rate of attachments
* llTargetOmega does not work consistently on child prims
* No copy objects lost on llGiveInventory() to a busy mode avatar
* Sounds started by llLoopSound continue to play when task is moved over no script land

Teleport
* Estate owners and managers sometimes bypass the telehub
* Popgun does not work after teleport to no-script land
* Teleport home from an adjacent sim launches your avatar
* Teleport puts you at telehub, even if increases travel distance

User Interface
* $ sign covered by L$ button
* Bubble chat: Chat shouted by an avatar should go to the Chat Console
* Build button should only highlight while edit tools are open
* "Busy" cursor after teleporting via landmark
* "Busy" cursor if an error is throttled
* Busy Mode is totally broken on the Mac, kinda broken on PC
* Changing Anisotropic Filtering or Shadows resizes the client
* Create Landmark Here needs a first use dialog
* Clicking for-sale land on World map should find the parcel in finder
* Closing IM tab switches focus to the right, not the left
* object's group says (waiting)
* Cursor can go outside "Region" field in Map window after autocomplete
* Delete when chat bar is open deletes selected item instead of text
* Dollar sign icon not appearing on world map in an expected time frame after land set for sale
* Edit > Detach object will not show the name of the object until the inventory is opened
* Error message for buying l$ has text overwritten by button
* Estate Tools: Detail Textures should not accept anything but 512x512 textures
* Estate messages bounce back from people in Busy mode
* Fast timer stops after a few frames on dual AMD 64
* Fix Start Gesture or remove it from World menu
* "Go look for First Land" hint should provide more details
* Graphic driver update button does not open a web browser
* Group voting history is blank
* Hitting ctrl-m while chatting causes you to shout
* Help menu obscures bug report screenshots
* IM goes to email if recipient is teleporting
* IM window loses scroll bar on resize
* Improve viewer text field support for INSERT key
* Inventory window treats Page Up and Page Down as End and Home for some users
* Keyboard stops autorepeating in the script window
* Keyboard stops autorepeating when renaming inventory item
* Last letter of group name lost when naming group "GroupX" or "GroupY"
* Mouse clicks on Preference tabs should register even if your framerate is slow
* Music control is in the wrong state after clicking the "Play Music" button
* Name tags flicker on region cross
* No "you died" message on teleport home after death
* Opening the inventory takes your cursor focus
* Other user's classified ads are not visible in their profile
* Parcel names should be truncated when exceeding alloted space in menu bar
* Rapidly clicking on linked physical object sometimes opens move menu
* Red line in Statistics Bar > Packet Loss when fully expanded
* Received Landmarks should open on login
* Region Texture tool should block textures of incorrect size
* Region combo box on world map doesn't work as expected
* Safari does not handle secondlife URLs containing spaces
* Should always allow entering keypad's period for object editing
* Position, size, rotation changes are ignored while a single side is selected
* Preferences > Network > clear cache > Apply starts parcel music stream
* Sim names are only allowed to be 35 characters, verify that this appears properly everywhere
* Some locations in sim have no about land information
* Some name tags are invisible when you log in

I wish the mapping feature also had a chat relay. Oh, and a remote camera to watch them! :D

Just kidding, I think the issue between you two is disagreeing on how much privacy you think you should have. Someone might want more, while others want less. I think you should be able to toggle mapping on/off.

DOWN WITH MAPPING!

I had a idea a while back that i put in the forums. You know how you can grant people modify rights on your objects? How about having the mapping work the same way? They cant map you unless you grant them the rights!

Mapping improves your privacy by letting people know whether or not there is a second person right next to you with whom you might be having virtual intercourse :P

I do relate it to RL. I actually hate it when people just drop by my home without calling first to see if I'm busy or even in the mood for company. There are exceptions of course, my sister drops by all the time and though I occasionally tell her it's annoying I'm used to it. But generally, I expect the courtesy of a little notice first.

My SL daughter has mapped me a couple of times and I'm actually ok with HER doing it. She's looked at where I am, seen I'm in a public place and snuck up on me and in her case it's sweet, a nice surprise. :)

But in the case of most other people, again I prefer the courtesy of a little notice. I might be just sitting at home alone but there might be a reason I'm alone. Maybe I'm working on a project and am really not in the mood to chat or I have a deadline to finish. I'm also a wedding planner and I do occasionally do small private ceremonies. So you might map me, see me standing in a group of two or three other people and think its safe to drop in... well it's not.

So actually, this idea I really like alot Mimi..... the option of allowing only a few select individuals the right to sneak up on me. Compare it to RL aquantances. Some people you meet, you like them so you give them your phone number so they can call you again. But you don't always want to give them your home address right away.

Two or three or even four little green dots all bunched together might not always mean people are just chatting either. ;)

Of course in my case, it's always innocent. :D

The simple answer is to not give people your Calling Card, if you dont want them to know where you are.

That is exactly what you are doing when you form friendship with people in SecondLife. If you just want to keep track of people you know but do not trust them enough to not pop in uninvited exchanging calling cards.

I give my phone number to people I want to be able to contact me; I only exchange house keys with people I trust. Same thing here.
