Should we stop showing hover tips for non-interactive objects?

i say leave them. we already have the option of enabling or disabling them. they come in handy.
how can you even bring this to the table? this isnt even an issue. i can list a thousand other 'real' issues that should be addressed before this one. pay attention to what your subscribers, you know the people paying you all that money, are saying.
you have some mighty big kahunas!

Excellent Joke of the Day
11-08-2005 09:52
From: Moopf Murray Nice to see the important issues are being addressed Amen, glad someone else picked up on that one. I dam near choked on my water from laughing. From: Philip Linden Does the following logic for whether to show hover tips make sense?
Avatars: Always show the hover tip with the name of the avatar (so you can see who someone is at a distance).
Land: Never show hover tips.
Objects: Show hover tip ONLY if one of the following is true: - The object can accept money. - The object can accept dropped inventory. - The object can be clicked on. - The object can be bought. - The object can be taken/copied.
The reasoning for objects is that if you need to find out anything else, you can right click.
Thoughts?
This would make sense when you feel the system is almost at a point where nothing else needs fixing. Please tell me this was not brought up at a recent Staff Meeting as an urgent tweak or fix/hot topic. The feature is currently set as an option to turn it on or off. My laughing is at LL in why is time, effort, energy, money & a thought being wasted on changing something when it's already in place as an on/off switch? I’m assuming it’s a slow day over at LL to come up w/this idea. This seems like an enhancement to the current feature when there should be fixes to other things in SL. I can only assume that this new patch coming up tomorrow is leaps & bounds as far as performance is concerned & you feel the need to get ahead start in enhancing something else that is already established. Sorry for getting off topic, but this post seems off topic when considering there should be more pressing issues to deal with then enhancing a feature that’s already working, is not causing problems & is already an on/off switch. Thanks for the laugh this morning, you should do more of these post

Optional
11-08-2005 09:59
if it's optional, I think it'd be a great thing
Give us 3 options, instead of the current two (on and off)
_ Show all tips X Show for Interactive objects _ Off

I'm with all the folks who want MORE functionality and choice built in... I turn hover tips off occassionally, but then always turn them back on when they stop being in the way, so obvoiusly they provide me with benefit. (Thanks mostly to very thorough designers like Cubey who actually use them to their best advantage. Kisses, Cubey!) But I would like to be able to turn them on, off, or on only for interactive objects. I LOVE Flip's suggestions, though, and think that they would make them even more useful than they already are to me.
Oh - and I think Malachi's suggestions are brilliant, and would walk all the way to your offices in SF to slap you on the back if you actually put them in!
Hugs and Kisses, Bhodi

Well I think more important is letting people know about the hover tips options. I like hover tips they way they are. n truth I had no Idea you could turn them off until i read the thread.
I think if there is a lag reducing benefit to it, then it makes sense to set the default to off, bt if there is not a lag reducing benefit, then I would propose that the hovertip issue is one of the least problemantic things with the interface.

From: Ingrid Ingersoll I like hover tips. Why the hover tip hatred?
Hit View - Hover tips turns them right off. I'd like to echo Ingred's opinion. But more importantly, Philip, with all due respect - can we focus on things like Havok 2 and HTML and o2o communication and fixing movement bugs while sitting and tree-based linking and rendering engine 2.0 ... rather than whether bubbles that pop up that already can be disabled should be disabled?

I don't care for hovertips popping up all the time, so I turn them off. But if I had an added option to only have them appear for active objects, I might possibly choose that. So in my case having the option of having only active objects have hovertips might actually increase the amount of information needing to be sent compared to the zero hovertip information I currently need transmitted.

Tooltips are a common usability feature with interaction and should stay that way. Of course, keep the option for the end user to decide whether they want this or not.
I haven't read thru everyones comment but something that could be done is the use of a shortcut key. Take this scenario for example...
Say the tooltips were disabled in some sense. Well you could hold down say ALT key (just an example) and hover your mouse of the object to get the full details in a tooltip. This would keep the feature accessible but in a user choice manner. I think this would also help in minimizing some probing of information when the mouse is hovering over stuff quite a bit. I'm not sure if every new tooltip hover is an additional probe of info from the server or maybe everytime it is rolled over.
This kind of feature is quite common in 3D software and really helps in keeping tools/features accessible when needed.
This doesn't mean though that tooltips should be disabled by default. Create the option for the user. I am just making an additional or replacement suggestion. Take it however ya choose.

Tooltips are infinitely useful for general information, or instructions on how to use an object.
Sure, some people horribly abuse them:
Raven Studios - VerkinMobile By Verkin Raven Owner: Verkin Raven
But they can be legitimately useful:
Vector W8 v1.1 Click anywhere to get a menu of options Owner: Verkin Raven
It's nice having a gallery of artwork or paintings and being able to provide some basic information in the name and description fields. :\

I love hover tips, especially when shopping..need to see what the price and decription of items are. Actually I get frustrated when it gets turned off for no apparent reason...then I have to remember how to turn it back on.

I have to admit that this is almost bordering on hilarity. TOOL TIPS? I mean is that what was on Philip's mind enough to make him post TWO entire threads about this?

I agree with Moopf and Hiro, why is this being focused on, there's already an option!
Maybe people could find it if the client had a decent manual!

So in this case there isnt anything to worry about.

Was anyone else surprised to see a thread started by Philip to inquire as to user preferences? Is it just me wondering why the ceo is doing customer surveys?

I don't think it matters, it's probably a lot better if a CEO is hands on and doesn't just sit up on high with no interaction with the customer.

I'm underestimating the value of the warm fuzzy in knowing that the big guy cares about how we all feel about hover text.

You should have a series of check boxes in your preferences, so you can get tool tips only on those objects you really want them for. Show tool tips on: - all scripted objects
- touch scripted items
- for sale items
- free to copy items
- phantomed objects (so you know you can walk through that wall)
- transparent objects (so you know it's there)
- your objects
- other people's objects
- objects which belong to your current group
- objects which will be auto returned shortly
- objects only named "object"
- "age play" objects
- objects owned by anshe chung
- objects created by a member of W-Hats
I think that about covers it... did I miss any? btw, I think this would be an excellent use of LL's development resources.

objects belonging to your bf left behind at your best friends Btw, my personal favorite from your list, "objects created by a member of W-Hats", should probably include So Whats, too.

Leave them as they are. They are invaluable to get information on a quick skim over. Right click with the mouse means then having to do that on each object, a much slower way of doing things.

Well, at present, the default is "no hover tips" as there is nothing to hover over. I guess that solves that burning question.
