There are so many griefers there is no way that LL can deal with all the ARs they get.

The only place to get enough people to deal with all the abuse reports is the volunteer groups, the live helpers, mentors, greeters & instructors.

So all the volunteer groups members should have the power to suspend us and ban us permanently. That way we won't have any griefers.

I know a number of people who are part of volunteer groups, I myself am a greeter.

How can you check that this power isn't being abused? What would there be to stop me banning someone who annoyed me on the forums - or vice versa?

What we need is more Lindens dealing with abuse reports (bearing in mind that LL caused the problems in the first place, not vigilanteism.

Worst idea I have ever heard suggested on the forums.

I have been on a site where there was a security force made up of residents, and believe me, we don't want that here.

This *is* more sensible that putting your real name in your profile. But I still hope neither gets implemented.

Certainly not ban... Suspend possibly, Disconnect maybe... TBH I think there is way too much corruption in the volunteer groups (And I'm in almost all of them) for it to be sensible.

On this note though, assuming said volunteer is there, an option to flag an incident for review by a Linden.

So... Person A is being griefed, and because there are no Liaisons, calls (for instance) Live Help. Helper B shows up to take a look and having seen the situation, hits a button to flag it. Then, all chat and IM Logs, all build attempts, all edit attempts and so on (maybe a popup checklist) in the area for the last 10 minutes are highlighted and LL informed. That way, when it comes to review, the volunteer (if corrupt, or the griefer) can't hide behind the status...

It would need work to get all the bugs out, but it might work...

But certainly, don't give the ability to ban outright... although, there are a few so called mentors whom I wouldn't mind banning :p

I can't help feeling that all these threads are merely dealing with the results rather than the cause.

Personally I'd just like to see a community of ADULTS with some PERSONAL INVESTMENT in their world. I really think this is all it would take to remove the majority of griefing problems.

These notions of punishment and supervision are more suitable for ill behaved children... oh wait, i get it.

Whilst I agree with you on the whole... if residents are going to behave like children, I see no reason why they should not be treated as such.

I think there's a reason WHY they behave in this way, hence my suggestion of ADULTS with a PERSONAL INVESTMENT.

Not at all.

The beginning of this idea has been discussed in the following exchange:
From: Jolt Tank
Mentors/Help/Dealing with misbehaved users on Help Island
Was talking to a group of mentors today and came up with an idea to possibly work around the severe problem with users severely misbehaving on help island.....

Thought of having an extension to the abuse form, perhaps a checkbox when submitted by live help/mentor/greeter, will send a user to a timeout situation when the abuse form is submitted, perhaps teleport them for a period of time, 30-40 minutes to a place similar to a sandbox.. The idea running though our head is an interrogation room with a bright light and a loud ticking clock with their avatar sitting in it... having it on the abuse form will guard the mentor/help from abuse and cover their tail, and it might stop these alts and kids from being severely rude and disruptive to players on HI

Another idea was perhaps that mentors/help etc could mute a user to everyone but help island staff... so they dont disrupt other users on the island..

From: Seronis Zagato
Mentor, Greeter and Live Helper volunteers should all get this ability.

My proposal is just an extension of the idea described above, with added power given to the volunteers to deal with the increased severity of the problem compared to the relatively benign conditions that prompted the idea described above.

The volunteers wishing these powers are simply the other side of the coin to those individuals wishing to use the power SL bestows on all it's residents, for the purpose of griefing rather than something constructive and creative.

So I'll bang the drum for the need for residents simply to be adults with a personal investment in SL to be able to use it, rather than the waste of time and resources that is this kind of enforced discipline.

Should Linden Lab make any move to allow this (giving non-LL employees the ability to suspend or ban individuals) the legal reprcussions would be staggering. I'm amazed that any reasoning adult could even consider the possibility.

Mebbe give the HI volunteers / mentors the ability to freeze a troublemaker. Nothing more. And not outside of HI. It'd only get abused.

I'm beginning to wonder if there are any adults left in SL, reasoning or otherwise. Whether it's griefers, their victims or even those proposing solutions, all I hear is the ever increasing din of adolescence.

I strongly disagree with giving the volunteer groups this powers. I don't want to miscredit the volunteers as a whole, I applied for mentor myself and think it's a great way to give back to the community. But on the other hand, I see cases of Mentors, Live Helpers or other volunteers not even able to address a problem correctly or able to write in a coherent and understandable manner. Quite often I see them give out false or outdated information or reacting harshly on things they don't like. Those cases are *not* the majority, mind you, but I'd hate to be banned or suspended by a person who didn't understand a situation completely or just thought it was a good idea to get rid of an uncomfortable situation quickly.

Leave the banning to the Lindens and their designated helpers, but give us, the residents, the tools to help the volunteers and ourselves. Give us back name listings on PvP abuses, so we can set bans and warn other people before Lindens get to resolve the report themselves.

So... since i am a Live Helper, Mentor AND Instructor i get 3x the normal banning power.

Scenerio.

Said LH/M/I volunteer (myself) has for the past 2 days decided that to help raise awareness of the Live Help feature in general, and to raise awareness of the removal of the PVP feature, I theorhetically have been offering everyone in the New Citizens Inc group and at the NCI Plaza 50$L for everyone willing to message Live Help and ask

"How am i supposed to find out who is shooting or orbiting me so that i can ban them if PVP no longer exists?"

Theorhetically this is a great way to raise awareness the LH feature exists. Theorhetically this is a great way to raise awareness of the limitations of the abuse system (see 3rd entry in my sig too). Theorhetically this is a great way to provide LOTS of new people with a stipend that they will never see.

Theorhetically an alt with a name starting with E. decided they should report me for this and theorhetically I'm not allowed to offer money any more.

Screw the theorhetics. Give me those banning powers so this person will never step foot in SL again.

OK situation did happen. I'm proud of it. No i would NOT ban them. But this is alsy a really REALLY minor issue. I'm proud of my choice and will stand by any decision i make. But what _IF_ I really did get upset at something like this? Do you really want someone with the power to take their frustrations out on the general populous?

Its NOT a good idea. Probably only 5% of the volunteer corps would be people who would potentially abuse the power. Thats still a couple dozen people. Thats still too much. And do you really want to be the victim of someones bad mood?

I agreed with a very limited freeze ability that was safeguarded by the fact that multiple volunteers would have to act for any significant freezing to occur. There is no way to safeguard a ban. Its permanant. Way too much power and i do NOT want that ability.

NOW

Liasons who have Alts, their alts need access to the Linden speciic features so that they can do something if need be without having to reboot the client. Us mere mortals should stay mortal.
