I still don't get why selling freebees is a problem.... Hasn't anyone heard of a finder's fee?

That'd be great, if said finding actually involved any effort, and if - in many cases - the creator explicitly desired the item to be free.

If you want to release something free, licence it under something like the Creative Commons or BSD for software. Then if someone goes off and releases it without complying to the licence, you can file a dispute.


Something like "This is releases free for use for non-commercial purposes unless that use... b lah blah legal speak" There are thousands of them online that you can copy and paste into almost anything with little or no changes.

I think this time Merlyn may be right though, I counted seven freebies that I could clearly identify, though the prices being charged for them weren't as high as some I've seen, they're certainly not being sold for 0 or 1L$. They're being sold on SLexchange though so they should be reported to the people who run that site and handled according to their own policies.

Of course not! but at the very least you can claim copyright and file a DMCA request with LL.. if you're ticked off enough... I was just discussing other options in IRC for atributing licences... Robin has suggested LL might offer several licences such as CC atributions as well as others for scripts....

I would suggest an field that can be locked while retaining full perms on all other areas.. This field would contain a UUID that references a notecard like asset that contains a licence such as CC or BSD or something custom...

The licence need not contain anything, in that case it would be assumed all rights are reserved..

You know, it is just possible to think that someone is a sanctimonious attention seeking asshole for the way they conduct themselves without them having to be guilty of what said sanctimonious attention seeking asshole supposedly stands for and campaigns against.

Of course, all this particular asshole actually stands for is randomly and regularly accusing people in public of being a thief or ripoff artist with little or no evidence. Far from doing the community any kind of service or being a force for good here, the irresponsible moronic way said asshole goes about her business merely does harm.

The only real solution at this point is to make no-transfer objects and closed-source scripts. Otherwise, your licenses will not be respected and you will get ripped off/abused.

That'll work until the next permissions bug or client hack.

It's like the people who steal copyrighted art and chop it to bits to make tubes or blinky tags out of them - they think it's fine because, after all, if you didn't want people to steal and demand money for your work, you wouldn't put your work up on the internet in the first place...

I have to say I have spent well over 2000L on freebie stuff. It is simply dishonest. It is one thing to get the free stuff and change it, but to sell it as is, is simply wrong i dislike anyoen that does and feel they are dishonest. They are just as dishonest as the ppl that rip others designs.

This was my own solution to freebie sellers. All my freebies are no transfer. You can get em from me anytime and all you like...but you can't give em away or sell em. That is a poor solution to anything someone wanted as broadly distributed as possible, but the only one realistic at the moment for preventing scammers and cheats from exploiting your work for their own gain.

Freebies are typically made free because they're aimed at people with the least money, the newbies, to allow them more comfortable start in SL. So taking advantage of newbies' ignorance and making them pay for these items is exactly opposite to their original purpose.

I realize it's overused analogy, but it is kinda like grabbing items from homeless shelter and then trying to charge homeless on streets "finder's fee" for providing them with these items, while hiding the original source they came from. Technically perfectly fine, but highly questionable as far as ethics go.

re: the original question, the seller has a number of freebies listed, yes. It was actually mentioned in a thread on slEx own forum.

I've been finding more and more of these people on SLBoutique (and shutting them down immediately, of course). It saddens me.

We're pondering making a few changes to the code to ensure that the creations a person is selling are created by them. There are a few cases on SLBoutique where people are re-selling others' creations with permission and this would lock them out from doing so, which is a shame... but like LL, we simply don't have the time to babysit these children.
