Unfortunately, the way the legal system in the US works, regardless of how someone presents themselves online, if they are, in fact, a minor, anyone interacting with them can be charged with everything from corrupting a minor to pedophilia. That's the danger of having minors and adults mixing in a social environment, especially one that's open-ended, like SL, and has publicly acknowledged and accepted emergent sex.

Most laws state something to the effect of knowing the person was underage "or was reckless in such regards." Not knowing isn't an excuse... making every rational effort to find out, but being mislead beyond doubt IS an excuse. Also, to state that "anyone interacting with" a teenager "can be charged..." is very, VERY flawed. You cannot be charged with ANYTHING for interacting with a teenager. I interact with teenagers every single day. You guys have this huge fear of teens even existing, yet at one time you all were teens yourselves... and your interactions with adults shaped what you would become.

Holy thread resurrections, batman!
And welcome to the forums :)

Anyways, this whole thing just got a whole lot more stickier what with LL not requiring a valid payment method to sign up.

I think we all agree the no teens on the main grid is a good idea, if not for the social reasons, for the legal ones. All we need is some overconservative "christian" parents group to catch their kids doing something remotely "adult" on SL, and the proverbial sh*t hits the air movement device at a high rate of speed.

LL doesnt need bad press right now. They're not helping.

We can't have it both ways.

If the grids are merged, we'd have teens participating in all sorts of adult stuff.

If the grids stay separate, you're putting "deer" in one place and telling the hunters where to find them.

No win situation, really.

The policy of separating the age brackets though is a wise one. LL can claim "due diligence" if something goes wrong.

And at least there's a chance of spotting the hunters in the "deer reserve" but spotting the teens in the red (and all other colors) light district would be tougher.

And I definitely agree that some adults behave more atrociously than an atrocious teen.

My daughter is thirteen.

She's got her own blog, her own self-designed website, her own art. Her grammar and syntax are better than most of yours.

I'm not a big fan of IQ tests, but I've been tested. She tests far higher. You do the math.

She's english/asian mix in RL - and shockingly pretty. This is not just dad talking, this is dangerous.

The last time we went to the beach, strange men were taking multiple photographs of her, when they had a whole beach full of other people to gawk at.

A thirteen year old girl. One had a high powered zoom lens; at first I gave him the benefit of the doubt until I saw him track her back and forth across the beach.

I got her the hell out of there.

She's very mischievous, has already traveled more than most adults ever do in their lifetime, and loves to be mistaken for an adult.

Socially and emotionally, she is not an adult, but she has learned how to be quiet to cover it up. We play Lineage2 and Silk Road together sometimes (I supervise this closely) - nobody guesses she is so young.

Like many (most?) young female teens she loves attention from boys. I would never allow it, but just IMAGINE what would happen if she were loose on the main grid.

I'm not worried about her seeing furry pixel sex on a computer. Who cares? She has probably seen more real prostitutes and katooeys on the street in asia than most of you.

What I *am* worried about is an intelligent, child-molesting predator who will tell her anything.

She will make it to the teen grid, when I feel it is time. It is not the time.

You're saying something along:
'I am a responsible teen, I know how much alcohol is OK, so I DESERVE the right to drink alcohol -- even though i'm under 21'

'I'm only 12, but I know very well how to drive a car, so why can't I?'
(Hmm this example might not work for americans :-) In most of Europe, the age limit is around 18 years or so.)

And, yes, how responsible is it to get others in trouble? Even if both you (under 18) and an adult (above 18) consent and you two do some 'things', the adult could potentially go in jail, if he/she knew, because that's the law.

You don't have anything to worry about that teens are no longer required to go to the teen gird, since LL removed any age verifaction. So now they have no pretection against being sued, because they are being willfully negligence.

Other than legal ramifications, I sum it up to the old saying of "One bad apple spoils the whole bunch". You get one teen crashing the grid and everyone will automatically assume thats all teens will do. While this isnt the case in RL, people make rash judgements this way.

I myself work with teenagers & the maturity levels vary.

The success of the teen grid is obviously been shown. Since the removeal of the age verification, it tells me straight out, that the teens would rather risk coming to the adult grid. Since 'thats where the action is.'

I'm simply pondering about how much longer I'm going to stay because I don't want this to end up like another TSO idiocy contest. That's the one main reason why I left TSO is because I hated dealing with the kids, and yes, I automatically assumed people were 18+ here, and I knew to an extent, I could have a reasonable conversation, and not just LOLOLOMFGBBQ111111!!!!one!!!!11111 crap.

Aww, c'mon. Everybody knows that teens are fiends from the deepest slime pits of hell.

But seriously. The ban serves an important purpose. As it has been previosly said, it is there to protect the teen. Not all mature at the same rate, and many teens are truly naive. We have even had PRE-teens here. There was one several years ago who turned out to be 11. He was caught, banned, then caught and banned again. He waqs complaining to me, and couldn't understand why he was banned. I tried to explain to him about pedophiles, and asked him what would he do if I invited him over to my house to play SL. (He knew I was 49 at the time.) His answer totally blew me away. He said, " I would come over because I TRUST you." That is exactly what pedophiles try to do. Earn the child's trust. So, I totally agree that folks under 18 do not belong here. EVER.

Except that the teens aren't supposed to be on the main grid, age verification or no. If you run into any LOLWTFOMGBBQ111eleventyone!! action, may the AR be with you!

I guess its based on US laws, and theres no room for international variances.

I've played TSO with people from 13 upwards (its the nature of the game) and have had no problems, but then again I don't partake in cyber and there's no opportunity in TSO to make sex poseballs or go naked.

I would guess its more down to the nature of SL and what people tend to do with it thats the issue behind it.
