Linden alts - not such a big secret anymore?

OH! But THIS is interesting...

If you look up Torley Torgeson in find, she's gone. Torley LINDEN is there instead.

However, if you had Torley in your friend list before she got hired by LL, she's listed under Torgeson. If you look at her profile, it brings up Torley Torgeson's profile! However the profile looks identical to Torley Linden's profile, so I suspect we keep our friend lists on our local machines so a change in the SL database doesn't really update them.

It must be stored server side too, or you would loose all your friends when reinstalling. Maybe it is stored client side but it only syncronizes by key. Or it's just a duplicate field in a database that didn't get updated. or it's a different database.

so Aimee is right , stored client side and synced by key.

A scripter with a list of keys can use the llRequestAgentData command to check a list of keys and see if the name returned changes.

That is the result of entering "Linden" into the name2key database page at Ulrika's website.

The zeros are returned for people who have requested to not have their key and name association available through the database, from what I recall reading.

Whether the Lindens with zeroes requested to opt out or whether there is another explanation for these names having zeroes is a question for Ulrika Zugzwang.

The names appear in name.cache list if you look up the name in Find, People tab, and look at their profiles and then I think you have to exit from SL. Then dump the contents of the name.cache file into the database per the instructions on the database page.

Thus the Linden staff key list could be updated and made complete without too awfully much work.

Here is a possibly more complete list of Linden keys, sorted in alphabetical order.

That was every Linden in the Find dialog whose key made it through Ulrika's processing plus any that were there before, unless i skipped some by mistake, which is quite likely. There might be more Lindens in the forum member list.

Torley doesn't show in the find dialog when you put in Linden as a search term, but does show when you put in Torley.

Those who like to have the name2key database complete might want to take the time to pull up the profiles of as many people as you can stand, then open up the name.cache file in a text editor , copy the text, and go to http://www.ulrikasheim.org/tools/name2key.html and put the text in the "Submit name.cache box". and click submit.

Those who wish to establish themselves as true SL geeks could memorize ten or twenty of the keys.

Well, it is fun! Ever since Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, I just looooove to hear that ticky-ticky sound.

It was good practice in spreadsheet manipulation, for one thing, for another, Second Life is really boring.

Some folks seem to feel this information is somehow hidden or secret.

To some extent it is just an illustration of how keys are not a secret.

Some folks just like to collect data, so there is some data for them.

A scripter with nothing better to do could write a script that would alert them when certain Linden staff members are online.

You are correct. I think it showed names that would come after Torley in order, making it look like your name is missing. I guess it gets a hundred not in alphabetical order and sorts those. Maybe.

Use them to track everyone's alts, like Ulrika does.

You could use them to send usolicited commercial IMs targeting the LInden staff, assuming you want to quit SL without wanting to have to click on cancel account in the process.

Keep in mind she is trying to make a sound database and has reason to look at the keys in a way that someone just trying to use them doesn't.

Big Brother? Well honestly I don't think its anyones business if the keys change or not. If someone created an alt that was their business and their business alone. Just my 2L$.

I don't know what they are used for but recently while I was not logged in I recieved a nice AD via email. Oh Joy.
