Renaming The "History Wiki"

For awhile now we've been quietly moving to include some more general articles in the History Wiki. Eggy usualy explains why better, but basicly it's because not all things can be known what is going to be history until its already passed, by including recent and general topics you can go back and look over them and see from there. Also until recently there wasn't really any good documentation of SL so thats one thing I wanted to expand and cover as well (but now theres the F1 help which is pretty decent). Stuff we won't be covering of course is LSL functions and the like since the LSL wiki totaly pwns that department. We aren't going for a "unified wiki" by any means, more of a "kinda general wiki", things that are beyond the scope or covered better else where will just be pointed to.

Anyway, the result of this expanding is that while we'll still cover history, it won't be just history, which means a different name is more appropriet. So far theres not been any real good names suggested (atleast that I liked ), so I thought it'd be good to ask. Preferbly it'd be something that is SL oriented but nothing like "Bling Wiki" (although that does have a ring to it).

Any ideas?


P.S. This won't effect the museum in any way.

1) People complain "I don't have anything historical to add". We want to remove this barrier to entry.
2) The present will one day become the past. If you use our wiki to document what you are doing, to collaborate on projects, etc. , we will have access to more information about it if/when it becomes "historical" .

Not really sure what the wiki should be renamed to.

I think some variation on "Encylopedia" would work for the title.. like:

The Second Life Encylopedia - if you want to be a bit dry
SLPedia - A take on Wikipedia
Second Life Opedia - Same kinda thing
Encylopedia Second Life - Brittanica-eque.

While you are technicaly accurate about Reposting; that is not how the rule is interpreted. It is commonly accepted to include forbidding of linking to locked threads. This interpretation is Linden supported.

As for names - how about "Load Of Old Wiki"?

I might suggest something like "Second Compendium". I'm also fond of "___pedia". Though if you are overzealous, this could give you something like "SL Compedia".

Metapedia - slight disadvantage of being prone to typos like "Meatpedia"

SL Chronicles - At least it isn't "The Chronicles of SL", book 27 in the popular fantasy trilogy, by best-selling author Bobert X. X. Jeddingson.

"Wora'uld Wide Wiki" - See, theres some inside forum joke here that I'm missing, I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Hehe.

Chris, I like your suggestions, but they're a little long, the idea behind them though is on cue. I usualy find I do my best yet scariest writing early in the morning without sleep. I wake up the next day and look at it and go "Wtf? Oh wow thats good, but seriously... wtf was I thinking?".

"SL Societal Wiki" - I had actualy never heard of this word before. Its fancy but not sure it works so much, the thesaurus says the root definition is Government?

Encyclopedia variants are a good match for the content, I hesitate though with stuff like "SLyclopedia" and stuff because there are so many websites that already combine words like that with "SL".

One of the few names I could actualy think up was "Grid Wiki", the only thing I can think against that is that more than one grid would be covered so in technicality it would be "Grids Wiki" but thats not as nice either, thats of course if you want to be anal about it. Another thing, its not real descriptive as to what exactly the wiki is, but again thats not nessisarily needed I guess. I do like that name though.

Using Metaverse was something we were tossing around before, but I was generaly against it because I personaly don't think SL is to that point yet and there is the Metaverse Messenger (which now has its own MetaWiki so the point is moot anyway). Compendium is a cool word, as is Codex although codex doesn't really seem fitting. I'd never heard of Mnemosyne before either, it's a cool name and a cool background but may be too confusing.

Anyway some good names tossed around so far, gives some good possibilities to think on. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I'm fond of Second Culture myself... seems to include both history and current events, as well as not stepping on any of the other wiki's toes.

No matter what you decide, the history wiki is an invaluable SL resource and I refer resident curious about our history there quite often. Thank you guys (Gabe and Oz and crew) for the remarkable job in maintaining and preserving something so precious to so many of us.

I don't know the parties involved or any of the history. It seems to me if you are getting banned time after time though, that you might need to look at yourself and see if you can do something more effectively.

Oh.. on the original topic. I really liked the suggestions of Glimpses Into Time or Snapshots of a Metaverse. It conveys the impression that this is not all.. but what you could capture.

Id hate to be partially responsible for getting a thread locked, so..

Personally I did'nt even realize there were diffrent wiki's on SL.
Does anyone know the history of why it was even done/allowed
in the first place? Seems to me just having links to diffrent
sections would be good. But to be honest the one I visit is the
LSL Wiki. Who knew there was more then that!?

Possible names!?: SLW - Second Life Wiki, SL... Dang, lol.. I wanted to come up with some cool acronym. heres some: slackers, slaughterhouse, sledgehammer..
How about Second Life Obfuscator Proficiency. Ok, so thats horrible.

Really though, just Second Life Wiki or Second Life knowledge base, etc.

None of the wikis started out as Linden hosted projects, I believe. At least, the LSL wiki was a resident project; I can't recall about the support wiki.

The support wiki is really the only one that started out with Linden hosting (and is now being replaced with the knowledge base anyway). Most of the ones I know of have been user created with only the LSL wiki being hosted on Linden servers.

Back to the names...

Second Culture is a nice one, as well as Community Wiki. But it kinda seems like these would be things that would be covered within the wiki itself, even though both are large spanning words as well.

"Second Life Wiki" is a little too vague and most likely there will be a lot of Second Life Wikis named that before SL is over and done with. Simple is good though!

Me and eggy should probably go over these names so far and come up with some choices or something soon.

On the positive side, we have now had a solid argument presented against LL's dropping identification requirements before new memberships are made.

Or the negative side.

Hell, I'm just trying for a silver lining.

Trying to be OT: I think something short and simple like SLW or 2LW would be best. Either that or something insanely baroque like 'Second Life's Wikipedia Page for the Betterment of All Mankind and Reintroduction of Saber-Toothed Watermelons to the Wild'.

ETA: God help me, I actually like 'SLiki'.
