Pictures a UPS capapable if supporting 500 or so servers and all the routers, switches, hmm maybe I'll build it !!1 oh wait I cant afford the 10k US to buy a ten sim plot to build it on

You don't need to support 500 servers. The base systems are probably on just a few ones. Eg. database and stuff.

There's an UPS to support that, and it's cheap.

Webservers might be stateless blade servers, sims can be brought online one by one, etc.

Edit: Yes, the above is my OPINION, but I think it's a reasonable one.

Behold my luck,.. working on one piece of clothes for two days and when I go to upload it I get some bizaar message to check server status and it says to click Help,.. Help does nothing,.. nothing pops up,.. I kept clicking help anyways.

Odds are I logged out on the least important part of SL, too. Because that's just how things go,.. you know.

Grid crashed? No big deal, we deal with that on a daily basis 3 or 4 times a day in Pruni.

Dunno, I was just playing about abusing physical prims when it all fell over... My first thought was 'OMG! I've killed the sim  '. Finding the whole grid was down was a mite worrying until a nice Linden said it was a power failure. :o

I think I'm clear anyway - I don't see how making exploding physical prims could cause a power failure?

The one LL uses?

Actually I'd quite like to know which facility it is - so I can avoid it. I've heard a couple of people have had stuff like this happen with muppet web server providers, but it seems a bit unlikely for a facility hosting fee-paying customers...

Besides, my experience is that many datacenters can promise 'no power failure'. So you get in your servers, and lean back happily...

... until a power failure comes.

Then you get wiser, and INSIST on having a YOUR OWN SEPARATE UPS at least on your most important servers!

But this is sysadmin basic experience.

I believe SL is hosted by Level 3 Communications, Inc. Website here:

http://www.level3.com/558.html

Level 3 says this about their power protection:

"Power: (We provide) uninterruptible redundant AC and DC power solutions that are flexible and upgradeable — meeting all types of customer needs"

I've heard Cory Linden refer to Level 3 as a pita before. He didn't use those exact words, but the inference was such.

Oh, it's the power, I mean our co-lo sucks, I mean it is your ISP. My credulity is straining as 'tis now 9 hours down and counting.

I was in for about a minute and a half then logged out by an admin, getting in must have been an error, looking at the map, there were only 2 sims up in the northern continent

Hmmm, Intro? What's with the '9 hours and counting' bit?

I mean, I was in when it fell over - that was, um... roughly two hours ago.
Where are you getting 9 hours from?

SNIP

Actually that's the web hosting provider, not the ISP, or the grid CoLo.

You'd need to traceroute a sim server to get the CoLo data

Maybe it's a count since they were last on,.. or maybe it's because some post have the wrong time on them right now >.> So maybe the time of the post sayinf SL is down,.. blah blah blah compared to their Time Zone is 9 hours >.<

I have before, and all the sim servers I've tracerouted have been <sim>.lindenlab.com, which is hosted by pnap.net (InterNAP).
