edit: the forums might not want those who see th game as a game, but Linden Labs sure does.

Huh? Are you saying that you think LL thinks this is a game? Please feel free to clearify your statement. :p

I agree with the poster give us new people a break. A lot of the posters in these forums are well established players who don't need to care about $. I bet things were different when SL was new.

What I'm saying, Nimrod, is that Linden Labs wants the players who see sl as a game. Becuase they often buy premium memberships, the running cost being less than most other online rpgs out there.

Not saying LL sees SL as a game, but hey, thats what it is to a large portion of the players.

Everything in SL should be free. Lord knows, no entertainment in RL costs money. We should all have as many sims as we want too. And classifieds should be free too, just like they are in RL.

Movies should be free. Oh, and lapdances. And beer. And coffee. Oh, and I like pizza, that should be free too.

*bangs heads on reality*

Oh hi, did I miss something?

The not unexpected words of an established player. Were classifieds free when you started, or has it always been like this? Classifieds in my local paper are free on certain days BTW when items cost less than £25!

Classifieds did not exist before, it was recentlly added and we have always had to pay for it since it was implemented..

Just because some of us are not new, does not mean we don't care about $L, content creators work hard and put alot of time into making $L, many of them even use thier SL sales to pay RL bills, including, rent/mortgage, car payments, etc... So this isn't an attack at new players..

Classifieds used to be free, but now cost a minimal amount. Its not much and represents a simple buying process while providing an economic sink.

Its 50L of money in a game, its really not worth complaining about. Besides, I usually invert the list so the 50L payers are on top, I don't let people buy my traffic.

edit: the forums might not want those who see th game as a game, but Linden Labs sure does.

When was it free?

As the other person stated, posting your items on the New Products forums would get LOTS of attention. That is how I do my shopping :P

I hit the forums first..log down what I like then go inworld. FIND is my last resort. Why dont you give that a try? :P

Good luck!

No one has to earn money in SL. It is just like rl, if you wish to purchase ncie things, you need to earn some cash to do it. In SL you also have the option of 'importing' money from rl, of course - but if you can't afford to do that, then don't.

Things in SL aren't always free - just like in rl, what is so odd about that concept? No one is making you have a posh skin, or lots of complex vehicles or whatever blows your trumpet. And if you want those things, well, SL prices are pretty darn cheap when you compare to rl counterparts, lol.

Whether it is 'just a game' is kinda dependent on your level of commitment.

Log on, pootle about, chat, find freebies, build in sandboxes and when you have saved enough stipend, buy something you fancy. - a game

Invest in some land, create things that people want, advertise, set yourself up as professionally as you can, earn money - not a game

Things in SL aren't always free - just like in rl, what is so odd about that concept?

But no one dictates what your Second Life has to be.

And frnakly I think this should be mandatory- I read the forums while drinking my first cup of coffee so undicumented sarcasm is likely to slip roght by me - and in a situation like that attack on a poor stuck at home mom just trying to get by I am likely to mute the offender before I bither to finish reading his post

I myself am a fairly new designer. I didn't even know I could use a classified until this week :P My suggestion to you is to use the free sources of advertisment until you can afford more. That's the way business works anyhow. Use sl exchange. Everytime you list a product, it stays on their "newest" list for 24 hours. That was and still is excellent advertising for me. Add a freebie (everyone loves freebies) to lure people to your plot. Go to the welcome area and hand out a few of whatever it is you sell to newbies, with notecards inside telling them where they can find your store. Not to mention, 50L a week is a basic account stipend... so use your free money for that classified :D

When you list your classified, be very accurate and descriptive. I never ever even looked through the classifieds alone (way too much reading material). When I search for things I do it in the all tab, and classifieds are usually what draw me in from there.

Good luck, and remember, a little effort goes a long way :D

Good advice. I'd add, ask your customers how they found you. You won't know if your advertising methods are working if you don't. Knowing what is effective never lessens in importance no matter how successful you become.

I think what the original poster meant was that the players don't need to care about being short of L$.

I believe this issue was raised when the sort-by-pay classifieds system came in: it's seen as penalising newer businesses who have less to spend and yet need advertising the most.

I don't think that's quite right, though. When it comes to advertising, the Parcel Directory Fee is the best L$ you'll ever spend. :)

Thanks for taking time to reply seriously, most in this thread have just been scornful. It's just that some of the older players can be very flippant (pun intended) towards issues that effect newer players more than them. Sometimes they should remember that they were new once. I personally agree with give new players a bit of a break.

Well this is good point, but I am a perfect example, I am a well established designer and I have never paid more than $50 for a classified ad, just because I have $L, doesn't mean I am willing to spend it on unnecessary things such as being on the top of a list, people do not go the classifieds to shop at whoever is at the top of list, they go to the shops that come in after they enter in the search what they are looking for...

I have been told classifieds used to be free on threads speaking of dwell decreasing, sinks, etc. If I am mistaken, thank you for pointing it out. My main point remains though: its a trivial amount of in game money.

Were they ever free?

My understanding was that they used to be a flat L$50 for everyone, with no option to pay more to go higher. Instead the list was in alphabetical order, so every new business on the grid was named "AAAA1111" for a long while.

Silver spring park

I've built a park, a beautiful park with games, rides, fishing, camping, secret caves and we were advertising it in the events section so people would know a good date place to come, and people came all the time, people said they loved my park. Well of course we got a warning for it. So we put it in the classifieds and now no one comes to our park, cause no one knows its there. So any suggestions on how to get my park noticed more!
We're not a club so we don't really have many events.

That period was very brief and directly before the current system. There were classifieds before that. I don't remember how they made and if there was a price, but I did use them in my early days.

I only remember popular places inworld, never classifieds. We used to use 'find'.
