i thought this was always the case.. if you have the land that fits a tier, you get charged for that tier. i don't remember it ever being different from that.
am i missing something?

It used to go into "pending" or in-limbo mode before the land would actually become yours. This way you could scurry your ass over to the web site and approve the tier upgrade. I think it stayed pending for 24 hours?

I think what Kent is saying that now you are auto-upgraded to the next highest tier, without going to the website to approve it like before. The land in-world would go into a "pending" status until you go to the website and okay the tier upgrade.
Now it seems that trip to the website is eliminated and your tier is automatically upgraded.

sheesh common sense people. if you are buying land your tier gets upgraded so why complain about something you are choosing to do in the first place. i think the pending thing was retarded. naturally if i'm buying land it means i am willing to pay the tier. makes sense no? no need for pending b.s, you buy you upgrade.

From: Kane Tank no it does not make sense ask anyone who buys ands sell land and get some common sense. I buy and sell land and it makes sense for me. Now, I think I understand (though difficult from your posts) that you would like to have been able to "lock" a parcel of land by buying over your tier and having the status of the land "pending" for a day until you sold other land? Please clarify. Other than this possibility, it is not unreasoable for you to have a clue as to what your tier is and understand that agreeing to buy land over your tier will increase your monhtly fee.

Yes Gabe, I agree it's hard to read what he's saying but I think you've got it.
When you purchased land that up-tiered you previously, you were given a day in which the sale was pending, and you had to go to Secondlife.com and approve the up-tier within that day. I believe the OP is contending that this pending function has been removed, and he was auto up-tiered.
If that's in fact the case, I'd agree that LL should have announced this change, and done so Pre-Patch, so people could have made arrangements.
If it's not the case at all, I believe we should have a jitterbug contest.

it's been so long since i bought land, i had forgotten about the grace period.
i hear why this can be a negative thing as well. there were/are times when someone would want to shuffle land around and that small window allowed for some legitimate uses thereof. although, i think there may have been a mention of the change somewhere along the line. i don't really hav time to look it up right now and i could easily be wrong.
my suggestion is to start a proposal to bring back the 24 hour grace period. it may take forever to be addressed, but at least it would be in queue to be addressed.. one way or the other.

Has anyone verified this? If it is in fact a change to the billing policy:
Where is the documentation of this in the patch notes? Why wasn't the community informed of it in order for people to make arrangements? Where's my ham sandwich?
Ooh, i was so needing something to get worked up about.

They did warn and I think its a pretty big improvement; it still warns you in world that "buying this land will cause you to increase your tier" and just automatically does it for you if you agree. I don't see the problem.

The problem is, if they didn't explain that the pending period is now gone, this:
I own 2048. I see another 2048 I really like. I buy it. I don't confirm pending right away. I sell my first 2048 to a friend. I confirm pending. I never uptiered, as I never owned 4096.
Now if they want to do away with that, that's fine, but to do so without a head up causes a one month up fee to our poor OP. That's a change to the billing process, and one not announced (Flip, can you show me that warning that this process was changing? If it was posted I didn't see it).
It would be the same if they decided to change everyone's tier fees to the 1st rather than on the monthly date that you originally uptiered; it's fine to do that, but without heads up, you're affecting people may have planned to downtier prior to a billing cycle. With the pending, the billing cycle was 1 day rather than one month, but you've negated the downtier option without prior notice.

Indeed, the way it worked before: If you purchased land that would cause you to jump to a new tier bracket, a dialog would popup reminding you to visit the website to "confirm" the purchase. Additionally, an email reminder would be auto-sent out reminding you to make the purchase confirmation.
During that time, the land would stay in a 'Limbo' state, and your tier would not be officially increased until you confirmed. If after 48 hours the pending land was not purchased, it would automatically revert to public, and the $Lindens spent to purchase the land would not be refunded.
The advantage to doing it this way, was that one could claim a parcel of land, and then have 48 hours in which to 'juggle' their tier so that they wouldn't go over.
An example use for this: When someone is moving from one 8k parcel to a new one. Using this system, you could buy your new 8k parcel (in pending), then sell your old 8k parcel to the new owner.... then confirm your purchase. Resulting in no tier upgrade to complete the transaction.
I didn't see anything posted anywhere from Linden that indicates this specific policy has changed. If someone has a link that clearly indicates its changed - please post it.
Otherwise, yes - better communication on this would probably have been best. I could see where someone might get stuck in a bad way, thinking things would work as they did before.

-Flip Why do you consider it to be "a pretty big improvement"? Although I never used it, a 24 hour grace period does seem to have been useful to people. There was a week allowed before claiming land and therefore paying tier when buying at auction.

Yeah I mean it was useful I think was 48 hours and yes was great for players but now linden will force 100's if not 1000's into paying a bit more into even switching plots of land and such. Linden has found away to take few more bucks from our pockets. Even the guy in support thought was odd how theres no WE ARE TAKING 40US FROM YOU ARE YOU SURE!

Kane, if I happened to be caught by this switch, I'd email billing@lindenlab.com, explain the situation, show that I'd downtiered (I'm assuming this is what you were doing), and ask for the uptier money back. /shrug, but I'm a real pain in the ass.
